GOAT gun-fu movie

Considering Wick's reputation, 7 million seemed kind of low, like an insult.

Does it still have the feel of good world building and style and atmosphere?

Honestly he trailer looks like it went more generic actiony in terms of tone. There were specific reasons the first was good.
>>
>>79327650

yeah they definitely expanded the world. great sets and action scenes... theyre expanding it even more in the next one
>>
Was good. After the initial scene it took a while to get going again.

Definitely not as good as the first.
Also I really enjoyed the scenes where the cleanup crew came in after all of John's kills. I was upset they weren't in this one.

Fuck what other people say, the action was great.
The craziest part of it is, aside from the first movie, you're still dealing with someone who's been out of the action for what, five years?

It's like watching somebody try and do a no-damage run on the highest difficulty of an insanely difficult game.

>>WITH A FUCKING PENCIL

>>79330577
No, b-tier kung fu movies don't have better action, which is why muay thai and pencak silat is slowly taking over screen presence. If you're watching this looking for a deep story, you completely missed the point.

I was feeling the same about the fact that it seemed like nobody went for headshots, but at the same time 1) he was often somewhat crouched so if you were behind him you'd only get a clear shot at his hair (not guaranteed success) and 2) nobody knew he was wearing the magic suit. Body shots are easier to land.

And the trailers made this movie seem like it was gonna be a step backwards. Sooo glad I saw it anyway.
>>
>>79324901
I've never understood why Gotham's bad guys didn't just pay for snipers to be in position around the batsignal around the clock and wait for Gordan to turn it on and just shoot Bat's in the head when he shows up.

The first one is more compound which gives it a bit of a different feel, int he second some things are sort of forced. The beginning is great, then it sacks a bit, then it gets better again.

Quite honestly I prefer the more compound first movie because you just don't know where the movie is taking you. It does get better and better but then the movie is over.

That said I still fear it turns out like Taken, each movie has some of the same scenes merely more over the top, more kills, same "reasons" for Wick and villains but it gets boring the more movies they make. By the end John will have no real development at all and he will still be crying tears of just.

The Matrix
Oldboy
Crouching Tiger
Hero
Fearless
Children of Men
Drunken Master
Fury Road

Usually they either fall into the camp of "not trying to be realistic" or "trying to be realistic but not completely fucking off with the story."

Wick is an action movie that doesn't go for crazy spectacle (Crouching Tiger or the Matrix), but lacks the super cool stunts and martial arts required for a non-spectacle movie (a la the good Jackie Chan movies). So it falls flat for me.

Fury Road was such a garbage movie, I have no idea why people like it. Children of Men and Oldboy aren't action movies in the same way that John Wick is. I'm not even sure the comparison works. The Matrix feels more like the Raid with its action and is more kung-fu-ish than anything in John Wick. The amount of action isn't the issue but the Raid and John Wick aren't even the same action wise, they feel different from each other if you look at their action scenes side by side, and the Matrix is more like the Raid than it is John Wick The Matrix also lacks the scale from what I remember as it's not generally more than a few people at a time fighting while in John Wick it's waves of people going up against Wick. Not really comparable, and it may be partly because of the way that each was directed, but I like John Wick's action scenes more than the Matrix. You're right that the Matrix is iconic but that isn't what we're talking about.

I agree that's it's hard to compare the two (one being scifi where they can bend reality and the other being more realistic), but what you said about The Matrix's action scenes not being comparable to John Wick 2 is laughable.

Besides that the movies are fine. I just don't understand why the Continental *always* has to make your life forfeit for doing business there. Can't they just say "fuck off" and refuse service? It's not like the Continental gives a bounty for it so why woul anyone care?

>>

For you
>>
>>79339175
>Can't they just say "fuck off" and refuse service?
That's basically what they do. Wick is excommunicated from the assassin guild thing and doesn't get to use any of its services anymore and doesn't get any of the protections it offers. The family of the two big people he killed in this movie is the one that's doubling the bounty to 14 million and causing everyone to go after him.
>>
>>79339320
I thought that when he says "your life is forfeit" that means the Continental will kill you (for tarnishing its reputation). Isn't that why Perkins was killed on the spot?
>>
>>79339366
I guess it is kind of confusing when you think about it but the main guy at the end says he's delaying the excommunication for 1 hour to let Wick get away as after he's excommunicated (which is what happened to Perkins) everyone is allowed to kill him. He even says at some point in the movie that he doesn't kill people for breaking the rules, only excommunicates them, but the other assassins can kill the people who are excommunicated. But I think the point is that Wick doesn't get the protections from the Continental anymore and he has a $14 million bounty on his head so everyone is going to try and collect that even if the Continental doesn't kill him itself.

For clarification, the Continental does put out hits on people when/if they break the rules. It's not a matter of if, just when. When an assassin is excommunicated, he/she is automatically hunted by continental special hunters who are part of the larger assassin network. Wick even asks Winston why he's still alive since he knows the house rules; Winston replies that he's only alive because he wills it as such. It was established in the movie that Winston more or less represents the police force/bureaucracy of the universe, an enforcement system for the whole network of assassins. Even Santonio, despite his relatively high post, couldn't bypass Winston. When he didn't want to complete the marker by signing in blood, Winston pretty much told him it's a rule that's not meant to be broken and just looked at him. Santonio instantly signed the book and completed the marker because he knew he wouldn't make it out of that room alive if he kept fucking around with Winston.

The bounty on his head is from Santonio's family, but he has a separate bounty from Winston. I don't think that has an actual amount of money attached to it; it's just one of those ''if seen, kill'' since he broke rules.

In short, John has two bounties on his head: one is based on monetary value, the other is based solely on breaking the law(s) within the system. Winston gave him a one hour head start because he likes him, but after that, it's fair game.
>>
>>79341094
I think Winston is the definition of Lawful Neutral
>>
>>79337274
I wonder if The Continental would ever recognize Agent 47?
>>

The third film will be John Wick, the black guy from this film, the continental front desk man, and the homeless man/morpheus teaming up to take down the continental because its purpose serves to help anyone including the bad, and some assassins think the manager has the best interests of some of the assassins above others, so it's finally time to take them down before they become too powerful.

I did some searching and found an article:

>What's more important is how well 'John Wick' performed at the Australian Box Office compared to every other film that played in Australian cinemas.
>And the frustrating answer to that question is 'not well'. 'John Wick' wasn't in the top ten, the top 20 or even the top 30 grossing films of 2014 in the Australian Box Office.
>Of all the films released theatrically in Australia in 2014, 'John Wick' was the 77th highest grossing film.
>The marketplace has changed, and film distributors have to react accordingly. In an ever changing marketplace, there's only one thing for certain. To get a movie into cinemas, it'll have to have a better than average prospect of turning a profit.
>And don't get narky at a distributor that seems to be doing everything in its power to try and get you what you want.

So in short, they still didn't organize this months ago and decided to only start doing it recently and it's not rated yet.

>>
I didn't really like the camera placement in a lot of these action scenes. In John Wick, it felt like the camera more often followed John from around the back, so we saw the guys before he gunned them down. Not all the time, but generally.

In 2, especially the Rome shootout, we'd be following John from the front, and only see a lot of them AFTER he'd shot them.

It kind of took me out of those scenes. I liked 2, but it dragged at parts. I think 1 was the stronger of the two, though that Man With The Golden Gun-like hall of mirrors shootout was fucking gold.

Hell, Clint also had the pew pew shit for suppressed M4s in American Sniper.

>What was that last scene with Winston having all the people stop and look at Wick? I didnt get that
That all those people were assassins that were a part of the guild and all of them would be after Wick once his excommunication was complete.
>>
>>79347405
It was meant to show that High Council and Assassin's Guild weren't fucking around with Wick being Excommunicado.
>>
>>79347405
That he could have Wick killed at anytime.

>Not understanding that the simplicity of the original story mixed with the understated worldbuilding and well orchestrated action setpieces was what made the original kino
>Not realizing that John Wick 2's overstuffed and unevenly paced, with action scenes that suffer from an abundance of spectacle or odd directing choices

I pity you and your abysmal taste.
>>
>>79347499
>muh simplicity
Anyway you slice it the 2nd movie had a much better setup and action sequence set pieces than the first movie.
>>
>>79347499
lol pleb I bet you think A New Hope is better than The Empire Strikes Back.
>>
>>79347499
The 2nd movie had better visuals, better action, better characters.
>>
>>79347516
I bet you like Michael Bay's Transformers, you spastic manchild.

Have someone dangle their keys in front of your stupid fucking face. It'll save you the ticket price and you'll get just as much out of it.
>>
>>79347499
>action scenes that suffer from an abundance of spectacle
>implying John Wick wasn't a giant spectacle

>odd directing choices
give us your insight, oh master of cinema

I already gave my complaints. What do you think he's been replying to.

glad that she's alive
>>
how rare is it that a fucking action movie actually shows the protagonist getting fucked up and actually getting hit? shit was rad
>>
>>79347590
you are who? he is who? who's been replying to whom? what?

First one was better. That goes without saying though. This one was way more cinematic though. The constant red and blue lighting was very symbolic, especially since the movie ended with a red stop light in the center of the frame.

While I was watching it, I felt like this movie would work just as well with the sound off. The visual story telling was pretty good.

Interested in what is going to happen in the third. John Wick versus the world.

>that part where he and Common keep shooting at each other quietly with suppressed pistols while calmly walking in the hallway
Gave me a hearty chuckle, I hope Keanu and Common team up in the next one.

>First one was better.
No, Chapter 2 was an improvement in the action department.

They're both great films for different reasons.

The original had a dramatic/intense story and this one was all about showing off the power/force of the Baba Yaga.

Akin to the Alien franchise, first and second were both great memorable films for different reasons.

I guess I should say that I prefer the 1st one instead then. I can remember more of the fights in the first one more clearly. 2 had great action but nothing really stood out to me other than the subway shooting and when Wick first got ambushed by a bunch of hitmen.

>>79347693
>first one is better gais
I see all the hipsters have come out now that ratings are higher for the second movie.

I'll agree with anyone that 2 was a more cinematic movie though. There was a lot more to it compared to the first one.

Can we give this movie props for not being overloaded with annoying quips

It honestly felt like the first movie in years
>>
>>79347672
I liked how Wick's gut shot wound opened up multiple times. That does put him in a pretty bad spot for the next movie though.

His ex wife is alive fucking the Russian
>>

That'd would be the dumbest twist ever and would retroactively ruin all the movies.
>>
>that scene at the beginning where he's looking at his phone and his wife is talking but her lips don't move
took me out of it for a moment
>>
>>79347829
You left out the superior mirror scene.
>>
I totally thought Wick was going to get the four gunshots to the head treatment that cocky assassin girl got in the first movie at the end.
>>
>>79347881
Yea even that I liked because it was cheesy in a good way, I mean more meta jokes which takes me out of the movie
>>
>>79347938
I didn't find it that great. There wasn't a whole lot of use with reflections like I was hoping for. Plus just busting through the mirrors was a cheap way to get characters to leave that spot. I do like the subtle metaphors and themes in that scene though.

She had a really great rack, shame they didn't show it outside of quick side boob shots.

I'll be honest. I heard people say the first John Wick was good and I didn't believe them. It looked like typical action schlock. But I watched the first one today and it was surprisingly great. So I saw the sequel today and, again, I was pleasantly surprised.
>that catacombs sequence
>that pencil scene
>that scene where him and the black mini boss dude are walking and discretely trying to shoot each other with silenced pistols
I haven't enjoyed action movies this much in quite some time.
