the problem with this film is that the company releasing it (A24) got greedy and thought they might make more money by marketing it a dudebro flick with hot bitches. as a result it had a big opening weekend (for the kind of arthouse film it is) but most of the people who were tricked into seeing it absolutely hated it because they had wrong expectations.

A24 pulled the same dispicable stunt with THE VVITCH, with exactly the same results.

How is that a problem? It's an absolute kino tactic because what use is a weapon which never finds it's target? Korine baited the plebes in from everything to the casting to the marketing and then blew the degenerates out with his indictment on their culture. It was never meant to be a blockbuster. Tricking people with the wrong expecations was part of the point.

I don't think The Witch had the same anti-audience sentiment. That was just misleading advertising to make the dollars from a product without much of a viable target audience.

Even just making audiences mad is something that should be applauded. We live in a dick degenerate culture and everything you can do to make the participants feel bad is a good thing, no matter how small.


The end goal that all cinema should aspire towards should be the idea of luring the audience in to face them with a literal firing squad who murders every last one of them. If you can't do that then you can turn the mirror on them and make them feel bad about themselves. If you can't do that then you can simply annoy or disgust them and give them a bad time at the movies. This is cinema. The "pro-entertainment" empire needs to be burned to the ground.

Really love this movie.

I'm serious. It's a great work of art but not necessarily an enjoyable "flick" if what you want is "entertainment". I wouldn't recommend The Tree of Life to somebody if they just wanted some turn your brain off fun.
