I can't stand films with female protagonists. Will this film piss me off? I'm 5 mins in and she's making me angry already.

You can't stand shitty actresses and she's fucking horrible in this. As is the writing and direction. Save your time. Drop it.

it's a fun flick, bro
>>
>>79189086
No but it will bore you to tears, and it inevitably goes into a long spiel dealing with motherhood and stuff. I guarantee you if Jeremy Renner was the main character this would not have happened.

It's not bad, turn it off like 20 minutes before the end though

I watched this yesterday.

Pros:
>aliens were unique and cool-looking
>it was nice seeing an AYY movie not turn into intergalactic war because muh human aggression
>quite rare to see a plot so centered around the learning and understanding of language

Cons:
>shit-tier acting almost all around, except for the black guy, but I'm starting to think he is only good in this one type of character
>insulting quick and boring climax with virtually no suspense
>the aspect of language changing the way ones mind perceives time was poorly implemented and made little sense in the context

4/10 - watchable but not anything I'd recommend.
>>
Very straight forward film. For the sake of appealing to woman the protagonist fails to understand what is going on and makes a very senimental but retarded decision. Dumb ending.
>>
>>79189086
>Woman shown to be high and mighty above men

ofc it is strongk woman propaganda, the opening 20 mins is her and her daughter being perfectly content without a father and the rest is about how buffoonish military men are in comparison the the perfect gender who contains within her the best of masculine consistency in problem solving and the best of feminine inconsistency.

In fairness he just called women incompetant and that is relevant to this film.
She made a really dumb decision at the end and the film was boyfriend bait. It was made to please women and the sci fi element was meant to trick boyfriends into going.
Anyone who has seen even a couple of good sci fis will find nothing novel in this film and its values were female.

Nothing wrong with female values in films but I am irritated I was tricked into going to see one.

I would have liked the film to focus on the language part a little more, but it was alright. I didn't really understand how the alien language allows you to see into the future.

/pol/ is oozing out of you my man, you're so lost

You are judging a visual medium like film based on your headcanon values which the literal plot points "show".

All the other filmmaking elements don't matter at all, as long as it had "good values" the movie is great right?
>>
>>79191702
I mean female values as in the foolish sentimentality of the ending. I can enjoy these values when they are done well but I was irritated that the film was not up front about it and it was certainly not done well in this film.

It was a meh film. Also good to see you getting upset by the /pol/ bogey man. Makes my day. /pol/ is never going away. It can only get worse.
>>
>>79191728
>but I was irritated that the film was not up front about it

How? How it wasn't up front about it?

The opening and the ending sequences are about it.
All the major moments are intercut with those scenes.
And atleast 50% of the present narrative is a heavy close up of Amy Adams face or a camera set up of her point of view with a shallow focus.

The ayylmao's and the science are only plot devices for the actual narrative of Amy Adams character relationship with life/death and appreciating (embracing) every waking moment of it.
>>
>>79189086
This could have afforded to be about 20 minutes shorter.
>>
>>79191823
>Amy Adams character relationship with life/death and appreciating (embracing) every waking moment of it.
Your shits all fucked up and you talk like a fag.

Apart from that its incredibly contrived sentimentality. Its clumsy and her decisions are foolish. The choice wasnt between having a child, the good and the bad, or not having one.

That was forced to tingle the emotions of women. It is however a huge plot hole. Current science means that no child ever needs to be born with a congenital illness. Then add in future vision and the idea that she would allow her daughter to die like that is laughable.

Normie girls will eat it up but sci fi isnt about pleasing normie girls, is it? Its a bad sci fi film.
Nice visuals and alien design. Thats why I say its "meh" instead of completely shit.
>>
>>79192011
>Then add in future vision and the idea that she would allow her daughter to die like that is laughable.

So you're saying every parent of a kid who has cancer wishes his never lived in the first place?

And the movie shows the other "rational" side of her husband thinking that it's the wrong choice so he leaves her, but she already deeply loved her (just like her daughter loved her) and thought the moments they had together are worth living for.

And I don't think any normie girl is even aware this movie exists, let alone understands any of it's themes.

This film was mediocre af. I love sci fi and it's nice to have blockbuster sci fi that's not just explosions and banter, but this film was completely lacking in the character and story departments, which to me are the most important facets of filmmaking. The score and cinematography did not make up for, especially since it was all damaged by the undersaturation filter.

>except for the black guy, but I'm starting to think he is only good in this one type of character

>the aspect of language changing the way ones mind perceives time was poorly implemented and made little sense in the context
+ >>79191661
It could have been expanded on, it made sense to me though.
IRL Sapir-Whorf is largely discredited (it's also not really about brain wiring so much as conceptualisation) but regardless, I liked the idea and I can imagine how it works.

Think less 'Heptapod script unlocks the brain' and more 'human written language traps us into seeing the universe a certain way'. I mean our language evolved with us in a specific evolutionary niche, it's good enough for it's purpose but the idea that it restricts us outside of that niche is an interesting idea.

>>79191879
>This could have afforded to be about 20 minutes shorter.
It was a slow movie, definitely. Lots of build up and slow panning shots to build mood. They payoff when the first alien appears is worth it though.

>>79192011
>Current science means that no child ever needs to be born with a congenital illness
If only that were true.
In reality, a handful of congenital illnesses can be fixed by gene-editing in vitro prior to IVF and even that takes a fuck load of expensive shit to do and you'd have to convince a doctor to even do it considering how ridiculous it is. I mean, if you're a billionare with dormant Huntington's then sure, get tested and if necessary, have a genetically engineered IVF baby and you're good.

>Why not use pre implantation genetic diagnosis to make sure that child is cured of the genetic problem before she is even implanted in the womb?
You're assuming that the disease has a smoking gun gene. Most don't.

>>79192594
>....
Continuing...

Most diseases and especially cancer aren't a 100% "You have the gene and so you get the disease". In most cases, there are a cluster of genes and the more you have, the more likely you are to develop the disease in some form. Maybe lethal but maybe treatable and maybe insignificant.

There are lots of diseases that we just don't know the cause for, only that some genes are more common in sufferers than they should be, plenty of people with those genes don't get the disease though so it's confusing.

Cancer is even worse, the genes that contribute to cancer (except for a small number of special cases) are usually only contributing to the /risk/ of cancer. It's just lowering resistance to environmental influences or repair mechanisms or something so that the chances are worse, that's all.

Don't get me started on prior diseases and shit, there's any number of things that are just the result of misfolded proteins and those could be any one of thousands of possible mutations and it's very hard to say what a gene 'should' look like because lots of variants of the gene exist and most of the ones that don't kill you in the womb work fine.
>>
>>79192602
>If the film actually does have a determininilistic message than what was the point of the film?

>"The idea is that the heptapods see life like a [scripted] play. They know what will happen, so they have the choice — either they do it bored to death, or they embrace it and try to be at their best, like an actor on a stage."

>She can certainly take action to prevent her child ever having the genetic illness
There's nothing to suggest that it's genetic. Only that it happens. If we assume that it's cancer, we can probably extrapolate that it's leukemia because that's the most common form of childhood cancer (though she's a bit old for it when it hits but whatever, it's not set in stone), in which case, leukemia is usually not genetic. I mean, technically it's a mutation in a gene but it's not a stem-line mutation, it randomly occurs in a blood cell precursor (or related cell). Maybe the kid just too close to the tv or something.

>>79192733
Yes I was smacked in the face with the message that its about enjoying what we get but the idea that the film has a deteraminalistic message is wrong.

Who are you quoting?

Then there are genetic risk factors and/or environmental factors.

The most I can give you is that I would have appreciated a scene where she at least attempts to use her powers to change the outcome but for whatever reason its beyond our science.

Odds are she could have done it between current technology and future vision.

He is implying. Not quoting.

>The heptopods can see the best outcome and feel they have to do that (for example one of them dying) but they are still influencing that outcome.

Yeah, the fact that they arrived to influence humanity a long time before the payoff, and the phone call at the end, both show that future knowledge can be used to influence past events. Well, the latter shows that, the former shows that the heptapods think it's worth the effort.

>So live somewhere else. Have the same child and roll the dice with environmental factors.
Well I'd do what you're suggesting, I'd read all the medical reports and message myself in the past the way she did the phone call, more or less. Still, some shit can't really be prevented. Maybe the kid just had a cluster of genes that indicated a 25% chance of leukemia, what are you going to do? Have the child or not?

It's not that thought out because really, she could just have blown the husband for a week and had sex a month later and it would be a different set of genes in play and a new future reality, who the fuck knows how time travel works because it probably actually doesn't.

>Really Makes You Think: The Movie

Why do so many plebs love this shit? Everything interesting about this movie is completely wasted on a fucking pseudo-intellectual conclusion. In a good Sci-Fi movie this ending would have simply been a minor aspect of a greater whole, not the whole schtick of the entire movie.

I can't stand autists arguing about politics on a Television & Film board. Will this thread piss me off? I'm 5 posts in and it's making me angry already.

get used to it. hollywood has declared a culture war that will go on for at least four years

>>79192546
>le they're the exact same!

Wrong. Kill yourself if you're going to have an sjw stance like that

>In a good Sci-Fi movie this ending would have simply been a minor aspect of a greater whole

2001: A Space Odyssey is not a good Sci-Fi movie?
>>
>>79192913
It was an attempt at making a sci fi with a more female slant. Which is fine.

Its not for me though.
>>
>>79192954
How about simply not reading threads you dislike, you retard?
>>
>>79192883
Well if its a different egg and sperm its not really the same child even if its very similar. With knowledge of the future child it might be a bit too much like aborting and trying again.

yea I must say I liked those octopus ayylmaos. they elevate what is a 4/10 film to a 5/10

>Can you explain to me what you don't like about her, OP? I thought she was fine.

Every character in the movie is there to validate her greatness. She spends the whole movie lecturing generals, intelligence officers, even the president of China.

Amy Adams calls the shots. It's her world and the men of this movie just revolve around her like moons of a giant gaseous planet.

>>shit-tier acting almost all around, except for the black guy, but I'm starting to think he is only good in this one type of character

You need to watch Ghost Dog and Last King of Scotland.
