Luke is a failed Jedi. His defeat of Vader was planned by the Emperor to get a new apprentice.

When he defeats Vader, its through his hatred, not balance. Vader can't do the same because Luke is the only person he doesn't hate.

If Vader hadn't been able to collect himself and throw the Emperor over the side Luke would have likely been tortured into becoming a new Darth apprentice repeating the sins of his father.

Palpatine was actually the one keeping Vader alive through the force all these years. When Vader was fighting Luke Palpatine lessened the physical aid that he gave Vader to let Luke kill him and take his place. That's also why Vader died soon after Sheev, who wasn't around to keep him alive with his force powers.
