How to get into Star Trek?

Where should I start?

And finally, is it worth it? My only reference point is that I'm a big Mass Effect fan.

I mean, there are a lot of similarities between ME and Trek, but they're also extremely different. If you are into at least entry level sci fi you'll probably enjoy them but some of the older shows/movies may be a little dated for you.

Not trying to sound condescending but if you have played that game first before getting into Trek you are probably quite young and didn't grow up watching it like most fans. I mean, I'm only 23 but I always watched TNG as a kid and also all original movies with my dad. I haven't seen all of the shows by any means but some of them are hit and miss.

If you want a starting point I'd say just go for the original movie or TOS but you may find that some of the effects can be extremely cheesy and over the top (particularly in the movie), however, if you can look past those bits and you will probably enjoy it.
>>
>>79135128

This is the patrician order, however Voyager does have a few very good episodes. Just a few.
>>

I was born in late 98 and I've seen all the shows with my mum as well, our generation was basically only exposed to it through our parents.

You may have a hard time with TOS and early TNG seasons, as they're mostly non-serialized. Each episode is an adventure-of-the-week, and with a few exceptions there's no real lasting character growth or continuity from one episode to the next. TNG starts to grow out of this in its third season and onward. The TOS crew doesn't really get much growth or continuity until the movies.

DS9 is a fan favorite particularly because it's mostly a serialized show of long plot arcs and the events of the series have lasting effects on the characters and their relationships. There's also a lot of galactic politics and interaction between various humanoid and non-humanoid aliens. If you're a Mass Effect person, DS9 will feel the most familiar.

Voyager attempts to keep the long plot arc formula of DS9 but on the more familiar Trek setting of a federation starship on an exploration mission. Unfortunately it suffers from a lot of mediocre scripts and a few notoriously bad ones. There are some great episodes, but it's a real drop in quality from DS9.

Enterprise is a prequel series, around 100 years before TOS. It starts out really bad, finally gets good in the third season, and gets pretty great in the fourth season immediately before getting cancelled. Overall it's not really worth watching unless you're familiar with the rest of Trek and can enjoy it for the fan service.

OP, start with TNG season 1. If you find it too goofy for your taste, then you can skip to season 3 because Gene Roddenberry is dead by then. After you finish TNG you can either go back and watch TOS the series, or you can watch the TOS movies. After, you should watch DS9, from there it's all up to you. TNG movies are generally pretty bad, but some people like them. Voyager has some good moments, but it's also complete shit at times, and I never bothered to watch Enterprise, so I can't speak to that.

When you say gameplay I assume you mean combat, which is true. 3 has the best combat. In terms of gameplay it's horrible. Terrible custimization options, terrible companions and for some reason no companions from 2 joins in 3. Quests are "scan this planet" fetch quests. Interactions are close to non-existant and unless you romanced one from ME1 you get next to nothing.

In some areas but in others scientists actually wrote in to advise them on things. When fans said teleportation can't happen they invented the heisenburg compensators. >>
>>79137682
Its hard to just blindly rec TOS. Its fucking great, but its hard for someone to jump right into because of camp and production values. If you can appreciate a good story, and some goofy humor, you'll enjoy it, but I couldn't blame a modern audience having a little trouble getting into it.
Meanwhile the TOS movies all have great production value (except for V maybe) and were targeted at a wider audience while still keeping a lot of the trek spirit alive.
TMP is going to turn off a lot of people, it's basically "2001: A Star Trek" its the most artistic the franchise ever gets.
2-4 are all parts of a larger overarching story arc that maintains a continuity, so its smart to watch them all.
5 is a trainwreck, it's actually a miracle the movie got made at all, and as such I've learned to have a grudging respect for it.
6 is the best trek movie. Period.
After that watch TNG, then DS9, then VOY, then ENT.
You can honestly take or leave the TNG movies, some people like them, but they're lame stories, bad action, and shitty trek.
Watching voyager is a right of passage, and ENT get a lot of bandwagon meme hate, but it's a worthy entry into the franchise and does a lot of great worldbuilding for the vulcans and federation.
>>
>>79138418
>Things only go to total shit when they get to London.
It goes to shit so hard it retroactively ruins the entire franchise. I was the biggest biodrone on the internet until DAII. Mass effect 3 was my closure, and those niggers aren't getting another dime.
>>
>>79138539
I used to be a fan and cared for the series, but over the years my interest has dwindled. ME3 was a complete fuckup and such a scale that it still baffles me to this day. Andromeda looks like ass and the current state of Bioware makes it a certainty that I won't be buying it.
>>
>>79134931
Is that Ash Hollywood?
>>
>>79138418

I said it had good moments, it had some god tier moments better than the other games. Literally none of it matters in the end. NONE. OF. IT. Because they decided to move from a Babylon 5 rip off space adventure to trying to suddenly make it deep and hard sci-fi.

Hell here's the description for the new game, that I have no interest in, but I just looked it up out of curiosity

>The player character's intergalactic journey began during the time in which Mass Effect 2 takes place, separating the new setting from the events of the third game.

ME3 ending was so bad, so disastrous that they had to set the new game in another galaxy and make sure there could be no references to ME3

Looking for a trek general and this will do. I have an odd question for you all

What is the best episode (TNG preferably) to explore the ideas and portrayal of mental illness and mental health problems? It's the theme for my film club next week and we're getting a few nurses and students in to watch a couple films. Gonna be a lot of fun I think but would love to put a TNG episode in there.

Any suggestions trekkies?

Find someone else's "best of" list for ToS and TNG. Watch them and then if you like what you see watch more.

I watched TOS all the way through and TNG as well except for TNG I skipped a lot of season 1 and 2 because that show doesn't start becoming what people love it for until season 3.
>>
>>79143964
Yeah that was me but there were a few who agreed, and it is misunderstood, it's all about aliens with a value system so different that the Starfleet dudes can't comprehend them, like Darmok, but with games instead of riddles.

We had a bit of a consensus about it at one point in fact, and it was my pet project after explaining The Royale to people, which is basically along the same lines.

How'd you know that though?

>Can you watch Star Trek and be a conservative?
Sure, living inside of the federation would be a wet dream for a small government fan. Move to some small colony and you only need to worry about the federation if you're smuggling biogenic weapons or get attacked by an agressive species. A strong work ethic and core values is the foundation of federation society, and as long as you're not a drooling racist, there's room to accommodate everyone.

I hated Star Trek TNG when I was a kid. 10+ years later, Mass Effect comes out and and I get into the entire "investigate this ship that let out a SOS" stuff. Turns out TNG was all about this type of shit and after watching it, it quickly became clear that Mass Effect is heavily based off TNG and I ended up enjoying the shows.

I cant get into the original and don't know how anyone could besides nostalgia.

Everyone hates me for this but the first time I tried to get into Trek like 10 years ago I did what I was told and started with TOS and thought it was terrible.

Last year I decided to try again but generally followed The Star Trek Chronology Project on blogspot. Yes that means I started with and thoroughly enjoyed ENTERPRISE and it was much easier to move from that into the older stuff.

Thats not to say that ENT didn't have plenty of problems because it very obviously did, it's biggest being somewhat flat characterizations and a fuckton of studio meddling . Most of the issues with each show are really only so glaringly visible to those who already watched the other treks but if you're someone who didn't watch much of this kind of scifi before then this could be the best avenue for someone with your similarly "modern" and, as yet, unrefined sensibilities.

As an aside, Mass Effect had damn near perfect world-building despite it's many narrative issues so don't let the autists here make you feel bad for liking it.

Felis catus is your taxonomic nomenclature,
An endothermic quadruped, carnivorous by nature;
Your visual, olfactory, and auditory senses
Contribute to your hunting skills and natural defenses.

I find myself intrigued by your subvocal oscillations,
A singular development of cat communications
That obviates your basic hedonistic predilection
For a rhythmic stroking of your fur to demonstrate affection.

A tail is quite essential for your acrobatic talents;
You would not be so agile if you lacked its counterbalance.
And when not being utilized to aid in locomotion,
It often serves to illustrate the state of your emotion.

O Spot, the complex levels of behavior you display
Connote a fairly well-developed cognitive array.
And though you are not sentient, Spot, and do not comprehend,
I nonetheless consider you a true and valued friend.

How is that bad? I would rather have a product that's late because they took their time to fine-tune the quality, instead of a product that's on-time but which suffers due to being rushed.
>>
>>79154850
delays usually indicate trouble
>>
>>79154950
Rushes indicate trouble.

I'll give you an example from Trek history. After the end of Voyager, Berman and Braga wanted a year of no Trek so they could iron out the details for the next series. UPN refused to give them that year, and mandated that they create the next series right away, or they would be fired and replaced with someone else as showrunner(s). Berman and Braga agreed to rush out the next series posthaste. The result was a turd.

Better a delay than a rush.
>>
>>79134931
Best place is mid-series Next Generation. Without doubt. Just start watching a few wacky adventures and you'll get the hang of it

Only watch the non-JJ movies once you have some sort of frame of reference for characters n shit

VOY also needs more love in this thread, only half or less of DS9 is watchable
>>
>>79155032
Subtle.
>>
>>79134931
Start with Next Generation, then Original Series, Enterprise, Deep Space Nine, and Voyager if you're still hungry. Look up "essential episode guides" if you aren't really feeling a series.
>>
>>79137285
You're full of shit

Kirk makes the tough decisions and rolls like a real man. I distinctly remember a fist fight where instead of stunning the bad guy kirk was fighting from behind , Spock simply waited for Kirk to shit kick him before they carried on

Plus TOS is really comfy

Both can indicate trouble. As this isn't being rushed, afaik, that's a good sign, but continued delays aren't indicating that they are fine-tuning quality, it more indicates they don't know what they are doing or having trouble getting things right. We won't know, of course, until we see it or more info in released. But I'm hopeful, I love the TOS era
>>
>>79144125
The 5th movie sucks but I was surprised how it was not the burned down orphanage with every child inside that everyone said it was. It's like if you took an average TOS episode and made it into a movie with a few cringe scenes thrown in.

And because my expectations were so low, I was actually much more disappointed with star trek 3 after 2 was a massive step up.

Watch TNG first, skip to season 3 if you can't stomach season 1-2 yet. But watch the good episodes of those seasons at least.

You can start watching DS9 in the middle of season 6 of TNG, watch both at the same time. DS9 is a bit slow at first, but watch it.

TOS can be watched at any point desu, you might want to watch a top 10 list or something.

TNG movies should be watched after TNG. TOS movies can be watched at any point in order.

Only watch Voyager/Enterprise if you're hardcore, but Enterprise season 3-4 is really good.

The new show Discovery might be more enjoyable if you watched Enterprise/TOS because I'm guessing the new show will take a lot from those shows.

OST can be wishy washy but its a classic
TNG is kino but the first season is... jarring
DS9 is like an action packed show about a port city as opposed to a show based on a traveling ship so some fans think its not true star trek but its got some good stuff in it for sure
VOY is kinda crap and the captain is written in such an insane...way lel but you should watch some of it just to see if you might like it
ENT is criminally underrated but has the best mixture of OST and TNG, im a fan (one of peoples biggest complaints is that the theme song has lyrics unlike any other one of the shows)

watch TNG, its key learning into the world of star trek, it will teach you all you really need to know
watch the original for solidarity
you can make up your mind about the other three series

as for the movies

the original series movies can be hit or miss for sure
basically the theory is that all the odd numbered ones are the best while the even numbered ones suck whale sized balls (fucking star trek 4)
and as for the next generation movies, they are also pretty good, one or two might be weak (insurrection im looking at you) but overall they are good

as for these NuTrek movies that were started by and then abandoned (read aborted*) by JJ Abrams
dont watch them, they are utter shit and not star trek at all
jj is a bastard
fuck that guy

star trek is comfy tho, enjoy

We got the Ferengi a shit ton in DS9. I'd prefer less humanoid species like the Sheliak, the Tholians, some of the less monochromatic/one-dimensional ones like the Vaadwaur, I wanted to see a Vidiian evolution, where they go from desperate organ harvesters to return back to advanced humanoid race with many facets, I thought the sphere-builders were a cool race.

That's about all. Peace out.
