It seemed pretty clear they were on their last rope. They were winning battles and losing the war. They HAD to win their next battle, had to be total victory and they spell it out that if they do not win, it's all over. That it is much riskier and the loss would mean the end of their campaign.

I agree though, they did try to add shock value to it. I remember hearing about the red wedding before really knowing the series. After seeing it I didn't think it was all that shocking, I expected way more characters to die, not 2 and half.

when Davos asks Stannis why hes burning his brother in law and he replies that he was an infidel or the whole Mel rapes Gendry plot because Stannis genuinely without hesitation wants to burn Gendry or when stannis et. al are sitting around for most of season 4 doing nothing and it breaks the suprise and purpose going to the wall.

There is also a bit where the actor felt he was left to his own devices. There is one interview I can't find online right now where he states that he wanted to know what was going on with the character-he couldn't understand him-and D&D didn't help. There is also Dan? I think stating in an inside the episode from the meeting between the brothers with Cat that he believes Stannis would be a horrible ruler that doesn't care about the people.

You can google d&d hate stannis articles that will show how they misinterpret book stannis or just all around change him-shireen's burning being a prime example.
