I just saw moonlight. Didn't like it very much, it got too much praise for what it is, a standard drama. It is competently filmed, the music is good and the acting is good but that's about it.

People who review movies have even watched Kieslowski, Tarkovsky, Angelopoulos, Kurosawa, etc? you can't put this guy on the same panteon as those filmmakers, and they are judging by those rave reviews.

Honestly I guess that the critics who get hired tend to be people who have average opinions and standards, rather than standards affected and set by past generations of filmmakers. For that reason, their opinions would be more in line with any publication's readers.
