There is no question that that is a cheesy ass line, no matter do you like the movie or not.

It's just so jarring compared to the rest of the dialogue.

the movie is about human beings, how how petty we are. Here we have aliens landing, them actually making contact with us, but people cannot work together. instead they nearly start a global war.

Amy Adams has been deeply touched by the events of the movie, but it's not the aliens she thinks about, but rather her child.

Look you guys are fucking retarded. This movie isn't about "aliens" It's about the fucking Chinese.

Wow what a strange language you mean they are an exotic race who communicate using pictograms unrelated to their spoken language?
Wow you mean their language has a strange nonlinear conception of time?
Wow you mean General Sheng enounters the "aliens" with the rest of humanity but they are able to play a fucking game of mahjong? Wouldn't you need to have pretty advanced communication to explain those rules?

It's only assumed that the Chinese taught the "aliens" to play mahjong. And they never even tell you who won the game. You know why? The Heptapods are actually Asians. From the future. Sent to ensure their own survival.

There's no fucking proof that the Heptapods even exist. They are just the final stage of the evolution of the Chinese people.

There's a phrase in ancient China; wansui. It literally means 10,000 years. The Chinese people have told themselves since the beginning of their society that they will live for 10,000 years. This is not arrogance. This is just them stating facts. The Chinese people KNOW this is what will happen because they have seen the future and they are not bounded by our linear system of time.

It's so fucking obvious but you people are fucking morons.

>But somebody please explain to me how learning a language made her see into the future?

It's all based around a hypothesis in linguistic determinism which states the language you speak and think in determines the ways in which your brain works fundamentally, and that becoming immersed enough into a foreign language can essentially reprogram your brain to think in different ways. So it goes something like this:

>Human language is linear, humans think and experience everything in a linear fashion
>Squid language is nonlinear, squids think and experience everything in a nonlinear fashion
>Human starts to learn squid language and allows self to become deeply immersed in it
>Squid language slowly allows human's brain to process things in nonlinear ways
>Turns out time isn't necessarily linear, and now the human can experience time in a nonlinear manner because her brain isn't shackled by the trappings of her native linear language

This is literally all explained in the movie and you should feel bad for not paying attention.
>>

Plus how were they allowed on the internet to watch Alex Jones if they weren't even allowed to call their families on cell phones?
>>
>>79113349
That still makes no sense? The future is the future, how would you be able to "think" about things that are going to happen?
>>
>>79113485
its only the future in a linear timeline
>>
>>79113485
She's experiencing her entire lifetime at once is the way I understand it.
>>
>>79113513
Right so teaching the brain to not think linearly still allows humans to know everything that's going to happen? They don't really correlate
>>
>>79113485
it's science-fiction. linguistic relativity is a neat concept, but the movie went full retard.
>>
>>79113540
its not about thinking. she experienced her timeline non linearly
>>
Why couldn't Hawkeye know the future? He was there just as long as Mom looking at the jackson pollock fart language
>>
>>79113513
Also, if everyone learnt the language, everyone would know he outcome of literally everything in life?
>>
>>79113540
Well maybe the movie states that time itself is non-linear, we only perceive it (with our brains) and our lives to be linear from beginning to end. When her brain changes, she can fully perceive time for what it really is. She can see her entire life laid out from beginning to end, or "move around" to see/experience different parts of it, using her brain.

Ok guys hold everything up. You are all overthinking this joke of a movie way too much. The writer of nu-Nightmare on Elm Street and the prequel to The Thing wrote this shit. It's not brilliant, it's a blatant hack job. You got fooled by the pretty visuals the director managed to cobble up that this is a decent movie, it's not. You can't prove me wrong.
>>
>>79113637
By learning a language?
>>79113656
That doesn't seem very great to be honest, also, if you could see where your life was going, could you change it? if you could change it and decided to change it wouldn't that change your timeline which means that was always your timeline in the first place?

This is why movies shouldn't fuck with time
>>
>>79110826
I gave the movie a 7/10
Would have been an 8/10 if they had re-killed the daughter again at the end. Without the second death of the daughter, shown on the screen after you're aware that Amy knows it is going to happen in a different sense than in the beginning, the movie just lacked emotional catharsis.

Also the chemistry between them was fucking terrible.

They really just needed to kill the daughter again.

The scriptwriter literally said that was his intention with the script, so yes.

>>
>>79113819
They should've come up with a different ending in all honesty. They just tried to be smart with some timeline bullshit.
>>
>>79111111
F-FUCK YOU
>>
>>79113746
Yes by learning a language.
Shut your trap for a second and try some introspection. Notice how your thought run through presumably in english? Notice how when you're writing something out, or saying something out, your train of thought is "collinear" with what you're writing or saying?

Have you even read 1984?
All "higher" mental processes occur in a language. That language may be math, that language may be english, or chinese, or it may be heptapod. There are people that speak mathematics and or physics well enough to consider time in a very different way than you're capable of. Why not a more linguistic language as well?

That is the premise.

I'm in a General Relativity class right now and I'm telling you, movies should most certainly fuck with time. It is one of the most under-explored frontiers of human experience.
>>
>>79113818
Fugg I think you're right. Can you explain it though for me?
In the beginning they're showing the daught
>>
>>79113818
Yeah you're right, but you know that she knows in a different sense. That is what I was trying to get at.
>>
>>79113914
that scene would be the same whether they put it at the beginning or the end. they just put it at the beginning to make us think it was the beginning of the movie rather than a flashforward

they tricked us
>>
>>79113914

If they showed the daughter's death a second time it would only help the viewer see it in a different light. But that's unnecessary.
>>
>>79113958
In that way, the end ties in with the beginning, and makes a circle of the script, mimicking the alien language.
>>
>>79114042
I wouldve preferred a goatse at the beginning of the movie to mimic the alien language
>>
>>79114065
They didn't want the R-rating.
>>
>>79114111
they couldve made it artistic like they did with the alien jizz goatse drawings that were continually shown throughout the movie
>>
>>79113981
>If they showed the daughter's death a second time it would only help the viewer see it in a different light. But that's unnecessary.

Okay see this is where I disagree strongly.

The first death of the daughter is essentially the first scene of the movie. With it being so early on in the movie, the audience hasn't had any time to develop an emotional bond with Amy, or with the missing father for that matter. Sure it is emotional powerful, as any portrayal of a tragic cancer death is, but it isn't an optimized delivery.

This is film right? We're within reason to expect some degree of emotional excitement. Without a second showing of the daughters death, the movie seems to only have two real emotional highlights. First, the lackluster initial death that is presented far to early into the movie to garner any real emotional weight, and second, the explosion scene which was brilliant, albeit simply a moment of suspense.

The "recognition" to use a sci-fi/fantasy term that comes towards the end isn't really emotional as it is primarily a reconceptualization that serves to reframe our understanding of the earlier scenes and the first death.

A second death needed to be actually shown on screen to deliver the knockout. Sure you can infer that the first time you watched Amy watching her daughter die, you were watching Amy's pain over the course of 16 or however many years, but that isn't the same as actually seeing it again, possibly more drawn out and with more emphasis placed on Amy's choice.

They did that one scene where she kinda tells her daughter that she's going to die, but honestly that fell flat.

If I have any critique of the movie outside of the writing failing to include a second death, it is that Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, and even Forest Whitaker for that matter weren't very good.

The scene when Jeremy is "confessing" his love for Louise, the camera isn't even on his face, presumably because Renner was too shitty to actually deliver.
>>
>>79114042
Very good point.

Should have done the daughter's death again at the end. They tried to do the whole circular thing by repeating the opening shot of the lake house, but the bottom line is that there is far more emotion in the death of a the kid than in the lake house shot.

The brain exists in the physical world. Rewiring the brain to process things differently cant possibly cause it to somehow access things that it will process in the future. Its entirely possible for all of reality to be occurring simultaneously but your brain is part of that very same reality. Unless you think the brain, which only really exists as a concept within your own brain, exists outside of time, its simply not possible.

You lack a fundamental understanding of how reality works.
