The best (modern) Indian movies are generally Bollywood but look into movies like Ugly. India has some fucking incredible revenge thrillers.

As for those Bollywoods, you just can't go wrong with Dabangg and Dabangg 2, and Robot is a genuinely great movie.
They're stuffed with silly songs though.

2. Foreign (western) audiences assume everyhting Indian is Bollywood trash so it makes no money abroad

bollywood focuses on escapsim..since 60% of the pop. are in the poor/villagers they cater to them, and the villagers want to see an grand movie full of action, comedy, romance, danger, and songs...to find a more auter and/or indie like movies, you have to check out the 'parrallel cinema,' who share the better actors with bollywood and have their own directors who make movies on social issues, complex themes, etc

For example, pic related was banned in india because it touched on the subject of lesbianism back in 1996! that would have been a touchy subject in America, imagine india back then

One thing I do remember from India was Thums Up though. That stuff was the cola of the devil. It was fucking horrible, and as far as I could tell had no real reason to exist given that it was made by the coca cola company.

Chai is some dank shit though, I loved it. Samosas too. Fuck, the food was really damn good in some places.

That's certainly true. I went on a trek for a week where it took you miles away from any real civilisation, apart from a couple of tiny villages. They had no real electricity, everything was done traditionally. I even saw some people making clothes with a hand loom. Crazy to see, but at the same time it looked kind of comfy.
