When will the scariest movie of all time actually be made?

Yeah, Conjuring 2 for example was pretty scary at parts. But its sappiness and mass marketing ruined any chances of that fear sticking.

And yet, I can easily see how it could've been made 10x scarier, in the hands of someone who wasn't trying to sell tickets.

So when will they get serious and make some truly WAYYYY scary movies?

Insidious was probably the scariest movie I've ever seen, objectively. Interview with a vampire scared the shit out of me when I was 11 years old but that was my first ever horror movie, I dont think that counts.
Insidious had me nervous as fuck the whole time and legit scared that there is a 2nd world out there with spirits trying to steal my body.
It was the first movie of the whole conjuring style movies for me though, maybe that plays into it.

Will you guys stop with the fucking pretentiousness? What are you 14? These movies are not viscerally scary anymore, for a LONG time. Yes they can be respected in their own right, but OP wants the actual SCARIEST movie that can be made in 2017
>>
>>79088944
The only way you could make the scariest film of all time is if it is a film that causes the audience to die of fright.
>>
>>79088944
what scares you then?
>>
>>79089003
fuck it we don't need the scariest of all time. I just know that the bar can be raised 100x, and still leave plenty room, and no one's done it yet. I dunno why. Maybe it's the commitment to storyline and theme unlike the "visceral" horror the other poster mentioned

Apologies. I know I've seen this, I just can't seem to remember. Threads must've better narrative structure.

"Scary" is a pretty subjective term, I laughed watching the Conjuring 2, it was way too silly to me.

I find realistic depictions of certain situations way more scary than any jumpscare fest, where the feeling stays with you even after the film, while the jumpscare horror movies are more like a roller-coaster ride, just a fun experience.

I find scenes like these scary:
>The ending of The Vanishing
>The ending of Kill-List
>Zodiac lake killing scene
>The ending of Fail-Safe
>The balcony scene in The Conversation
>The entirety of Threads
>The entirety of The Hunt
>anything by David Lynch (not exactly realistic but it get's to me)
>>
>>79089662
maybe.
Threads is more an "after the war" sort of thing, war game is just the horror of getting nuked.
>>
>>79089738
The less powerful burger 'remake' i was thinking about was The Day After, screened a year earlier than Threads. This recency bias in my head, man. That xfiles episode Home is what i imagined post-MAD civilization was, must be why it sticks out more.

Tbf I was quite tired when I wrote that, just noticed the mistake I made. What I meant was that the film leaves me asking a lot of questions on what happened. The effect this has had on me is that simple shots like a door suddenly being opened, or a handle turning, are quite disturbing.

I don't watch horror films as I experienced paranormal shit as a kid, so bad my dad got a priest to bless the house and set up shit like crosses and so on everywhere. It still happens to this day, stupid shit like sounds of people walking into your room, my cat getting scared at nothing and so on.

I just shrug, if it's 'paranormal' then who cares. If it's 'scientifically explainable' then that's also a who cares. After all, the result is the same.

Anyway, I do watch the odd 'horror' film but mostly subtle shit, not the JUMPSCARE crap. I have long wanted to make my own horror film as I often go to sleep imagining what I would do. Funnily enough, one night I was thinking of a film idea and I was unable to get to sleep, so I turned on my light and tried to get back to sleep. I then came up with another film idea with the 'ghosts' or whatever attracted to light, so humans have to constantly live in the dark to survive. As I was doing that, there was a loud clap in the corner of my room, you know when people make a really loud clap on their hand. A single clap. This has happened before.

It sucks.

But if I was making a horror film I'd keep jumpscares to a minimum. I thought a horror film set on a huge submarine would be neat. Make it a prototype super big one the Yanks make in order to blanket China's key areas with nukes in case of such an attack. Have loads of people on board and throughout the film have people, background people, who are like sonar operators or whatever slowly stop appearing in scenes where they have been before. So many people in the submarine means it isn't noticed until some specific person isn't there. Have people continue to disappear, eventually forcing people to enter groups in sealed rooms. Various accusations and shit and fear rise and so on. Eventually end with one group in one location and people start to disappear simply by people looking away or blinking. Eventually the protag and other people leave room and run throughout the sub.

A proper horror film needs to blend an unseen terror, with a sense of dread that leaves you feeling vulnurable to your core. Like that feeling of being in true danger constantly. Let our minds fill in some gaps and cut out odly specific story themes about the monster or entity, no ones gonna be scared of a creature that will go away once you reture its bones to its childhood home.

I hope one day a "horror" movie is made where the movie is pretty timid up to about the 30 min mark where without warning it cuts abruptly to a scary face and the speakers max out blasting out a deafening screech at 200% volume.

I can think tons of horrifying movies but nobody would wanna watch them. For example a film where some kid wakes up to a paraller universe where his mother does nothing but screams like hell would be pretty terrifying. But who the hell would wanna see that? Theres no haunted house or explanation to paranormal phenomenon.
Horror films gotta be entertaining and if they just center around surreal and disturbing imager, then they won't be very popular.

that example is pretty shit, it describes a laughable and irritating viewing experience. if it was a direct experience then sure, but how often does a scenario like that happen in the vagaries of everyday life? 0.1%. your sense of edge has to catch up with today's sensibilities, the real world is getting more and more absurd so the pieces of art that stand out more from the white noise become even rarer.

David Lynch can make the scariest movie of all time. Not even being pretentious, seriously. Some of his movies genuinely frighten me, like Mulholland Dr, Lost Highway or even Inland Empire. Some of the scenes from these movies scared the shit out of me, can challenge most of the mainstream horror movies. He's brilliant at creating the mood and atmoshpere and imagery. If he'd decide to make a straight mainstream horror movie instead of the arthouse movies he usually does, he would knock it out of the park, I'm just sure of it. But he never will of course.

I get creeped by scary phonecalls. I think theres more to them than what has been described on traditional horror films

I once read this scary story on /x/ or here, where some anon told that after her mother died, he got a call where an unnatural voice was singing "my bonnie lies over the ocean". I don't know if its just my personal fears but that shit gave me creeps even as I wrote this

This. You're not gonna get scared by a fucking movie as a grown ass man.
>>
So,purely as an horror movie, not some satire that hits too close to home(egz.Idiocracy, War Room,Ollie Stone Snowden etc),
and taking into acc you can be scared by religious stuff up to the point(even or despite you are not religious guy),
I can't tell about whole movie but scenes from some movies got me.(also no gore or shock bull like Serb flick or Salo).
The Exorcist- hyena scene(really scary way to show that people are animals and leftover of that animal is actually Satan).
The Passion- Satan baby and retarded demon children
Gone Girl- that movie did for wymn what Jaws did for sharks(inb4contrarians and sjw,I don't like or condone this revenge chickflick, idea that you sleep with biggest danger of them all is unsettling)
TWD- now, I'm talking about s01 here, total destruction of civilization and peoples relations were spot on, to the point it was an fluke in otherwise dumb show)
And scariest flick in 2017 should be around technology & cartels, terrorists and how it can or already does influence our lives, that is what's scary to this gen(not some monsters or crap like that), paranoid society, rise of fundamentalism and neo dark age are subjects that could really scare people if done right.

>>
Scariest film ever? Nah. Its just the most anxiety inducing film ever.

Between this film and his other one, Diaboliques, I dont think ive ever sweat so much watching movies. Tension has never been used better. Hitchcock is the only other comparison

Hellraiser is the best mix of mainstream and patrician horror. Prove me wrong. The lovecraftian elements in Hellraiser 2 are pretty cool.

Even Hellraiser Inferno has its good moments. The atmosphere in that one is something else. Even if the movie itself is kinda shitty. That film feels like its putting you under

It's a few different elements of gothic horror literature (read: several centuries old) in a contemporary setting

It would actually be pretty interesting if a horror movie didn't marekt itself as "horror" at all and after 30 minutes became a horror movie. That would actually scare people.

Yes, i can vouch for this. But americans can't read subtitles for some reason so no one will see it anyway.

Conjuring 2 is shit. It's laughable. You can thank James Wan for that. Every horror movie that has come out within the last 5 years or so he has been attached to. Hence the reason why every "horror" movie today follows the same plot and has identical characters. The possession stories are played, as are the repetitive jump scares.

As long as Neil Breen continues to get funding for his projects, horror will live on in cinema.

We need to wait for high frame rate before scary movies can be made. 24fps is never scary because the juddering motion constantly reminds you that it's not real. The only scary things possible with 24fps are jump scares, which are the lowest tier of scariness. 120fps makes real scary scenes possible.

Sorcerer is great but Wages of Fear is still without queation the superior film. Sorcerer set up the characters better, had an amazing soundtrack and generally is just better looking but Wages pulled off the tension much better and the ending is one of the greatest in cinema history.

Sorcerers ending is garbage

Movies since 2000 that actually SCARED me regardless of their quality in terms of originality etc:

The Silent House (2010)
The Canal (2014)
The Strangers (2008)
first 30 minutes of Halloween 2 (2009)
The Visit (2015)
last 30 minutes or so of Lake Mungo (2008)
Blair Witch (2016)

There are many modern horror movies I deem better than these (e.g. House of the Devil, Resolution, The Invitation, The Descent) but those are the movies that actually terrified me

There are very disturbing underlying themes of sexual child abuse. Not to mention that Regan's symptoms and actions align perfectly with victims of sexual predators. That was the real horror in my opinion.

>Acting out in an inappropriate sexual way with toys or objects
>Nightmares, sleeping problems
>Becoming withdrawn or very clingy
>Becoming unusually secretive
>Sudden unexplained personality changes, mood swings and seeming insecure
>Regressing to younger behaviours, e.g. bedwetting
>Unaccountable fear of particular places or people
>Outburst of anger
>Changes in eating habits
>New adult words for body parts and no obvious source
>Self-harm (cutting, burning or other harmful activities)
>Physical signs, such as, unexplained soreness or bruises around genitals or mouth, sexually transmitted diseases, pregnancy

I had an idea for this wrote out a rough script and everything. It'd be marketed as a romantic comedy about a shy girl coming out of her shell. And then like three quarters into the film after the two FINALLY get together as she falls asleep in his arms he says, "I'm going to skin you alive". The rest of the film is just obscene torture.

There are several elements that are worth observing in the Exorcists story. I theorized that Reagan was being abused by the creepy director friend and the demon in a way was empowering her. When you look at the mythology behind the particular demon in the film it makes it a little more plausible.

Also there are little touches that i enjoy that maybe werent even intentional. Pazuzu travels through the air in ancient mythology and there are many shots early on in the film of wide open bedroom windows with curtains blowing in the breeze. Spooky

I shouldnt fucking have to. Its so god damn obvious that Karras crisis of faith and the mother being powerless are the central ideas that form the main moral conflict of the film. The whole idea is that reality is a constant struggle or war of attrition between contradicting philosophies or forces that mere humans are at the mercy of. Good vs evil. Science vs faith. Old vs new. Love vs hate. You can only choose one side of the dichotamy at a time. Human nature is about adapting and challenging the consequences of this conflict on a daily basis

The film is much bigger than just being scary

i get it just fine
its just not very good
scariest film ever is an absurd thing to say
maybe aussies take to it more
mockumentary is a cheap form of horror. it removes the need for an atmosphere by pretending to be real life

[REC] had good atmosphere and it was found footage

And youre right, Lake Mungo wasnt that great mostly because of the actors and the fact that nothing is really explained at the end but it had a good story going there for a while

I thought this movie was boring as shit, not scary at all, and its themes were just lazy as fuck, which is strange since I liked the director's other movies.

tl;dr fuck off kairo is an amazing movie
nah fuck off, kairo is horror kino
it's got a really great atmosphere, some very unique and effective spooks without being cheap at all and the themes actually exceed expectations for a horror film
the reason you thought pulse was better is because it's not a horror film by any stretch of the word so it has more to live up to but is less restricted by certain tropes

There was nothing unique about the atmosphere, and the entire thing was unnnecessarily slow and boring, however this wasn't the worst part of the movie. The thing I really didn't like was the atrocious dialogue. I can tolerate bad writing but it was especially terrible in this piece of shit, and the acting was dogshit too.

It's really strange, since the same guy made much better movies in the past.

All he's done is Saw, Dead Silence, Death Sentence, Insidious 1 & 2, Fast and Furious 8, Conjuring 1 & 2.

Those are the only movies he has done. He's attached to DC's Aquaman. He's "produced" a lot, but when they say "produced" he literally had nothing to do with them. He's a big name and the studio like to slap his name onto their projects to try and draw in a larger crowd.

>But now I'm curious what the original script was for Darkness Falls and how to get my hands on it.
I'm bretty sure the original script was exactly the same. The only thing that was different was the monster. I'm almost certain they actually filmed most of the movie with that monster design as well. They went back and reshot most of the movie to change the design to the porcelain mask Freddy Kruegar we ended up getting.

If you're over the age of 20, you'll never be "scared" by a film for the rest of your life.

You'll keep trying to chase that feeling of wanting to be scared but it will never come. The most you'll feel is being unnerved by a film.

>These scenes are the only redeeming quality of sinister, music and visuals hit the spot in amazing way.
On the contrary the entire first half of the first Sinister is literally 10/10 top tier film making. If the second half of the film was as good as the first half it genuinely would've gone down as one of the greatest horror movies of all time.

But ofcourse they ditched the really engaging murder mystery plot and revealed that the killer was actually a supernatural ancient Babylonion demon called Baghul who eats the souls of children. Fuck you Scott Derrickson. You had an amazing movie and you fucking ruined it. Fucking hack.

It could have been some cult that abducts children while murdering their families, sort of like Prisoners. That's a million times better than the shitty supernatural stuff they had in the second half of the movie.

That was what I was assuming. Either a copycat killer, a killer with an accomplice or a cult. I was certain the Deputy was in on it since he was so interested in Ethan Hawk's investigation. I was certain he was keeping tabs on Ethan to see what progress he was making with the case.

>the dialogue was bad in a horror movie
wow stop the fucking presses
are you for real dude, are you so hellbent in criticizing one of the most beloved horror movies in recent years
it does have an incredibly unique atmosphere, this entire thing of everyone passing away and the world overflowing with spirits and feeling isolated in that urban environment with no connections to anything
not to mention every scene with a ghost was fucking amazing and I havent' seen similar treatment of ghosts or spirits in any horror film
you're just arguing for arguing's sake
>>

What? All it had was a cult following for a while. Not many even knew about it until the even shittier remake came around.

>not to mention every scene with a ghost was fucking amazing
For you. I found them incredibly boring, and so did the people I watched it with, as well as others I've talked to about it. Quit being triggered that other people didn't like something.

Shutter is overrated as fuck. The movie is filled to the brim with so many poorly done jump scares. If that movie wasn't Thai and was just an American made horror movie you people would be shitting all over it for being incredibly generic. The only good scare was when the ghost appears outside the car window when they're driving.
