Vaporwave aims at being atmospheric or slow trance-like or whatever you want to call it. It's stuff to relax to for the most part.
Synthwave is deliberately meant to evoke the feeling of 80's film soundtracks. You only need to look at Far Cry 3 Blood Dragon, Kung Fury, Turbo Kid and Hotline Miami to see it.
There's a pretty big difference. Vaporwave doesn't have a direct link to 80's retrofuturism like synthwave does.
