But mainly because of it's idiosyncratic directing that is more indebted to people like Luis Buñuel, Robert Bresson and Ingmar Bergman.

Because of this it isn't much of a sci-fi action film which is what confuses most people upon first watching. This film is more of a question on what makes someone "them" and how much this is influenced by what they look like and where they're from.

A lot of this is influenced by the look of "Japan" in the film which is of course invoking Hong Kong. The film was made back in 1995 when Hong Kong was still a colony of the UK and so the intention is to invoke that sense of confused identity.

If it didn't look like a shot-for-shot remake of the original, I would be excited.
