You do realise that throughout history, anti-cavalry tactic has worked on the logic that to survive, the front rank of infantry has to die first.

A horseman ploughing into your wall of Pikes still means the horse is going to die and the front rank will likely be stabbed with a lance. By then, your formation is shattered and the next line of horses hits you.

A formation holds because the horses have no space to run into so the next wave pulls out.

In Lord of the Rings, the Orcs run because they realise these horsemen are suicidal and don't care that they're charging into a wall of pikes. That makes them flee. When one flees, others follow, leaving a much weaker defence which is smashed aside.

In real life, you hold because the guys in the front know they're likely going to die and know it's better for them to die than for them to fall out of formation and everybody to die.
