San Junipero had all the makings of a great Black Mirror episode. Subtle foreshadowings, aspects that only click with you after you've finished the whole thing or rewatch (like Yorkie playing Girlfriend in a Coma on her cassette player when she starts getting changed for her second night out or becoming visibly uncomfortable when the guy at the club asks her if she wants to play an arcade game that involves car crashes) and questionable uses of future technology that raise all the usual moral and ethical dilemmas that the series tends to pose to the viewers.

It's honestly just the most boring, trite, cliched episode out of all of them (except the one with the robot husband, of course). Everything about it is just ripped directly from a how to write scifi 101 coursebook. It's exactly how a teenager who is in way over his head in terms of technology would react after getting in deep shit that he knows nothing about. This show was such an enormous letdown. I was expecting some awesome grimdark what ifs, instead it was just totally absurd scenarios that were not believable in the slightest.

I'm always surprised so many people liked Entire History of You, it made me feel too anxious.

that's almost the point, it was good, well written, and made you anxious
some of the other episodes you can watch without feeling anything, in my opinion that's the episode failing to get its point across
also entire history was more about the characters rather than the technology, it was a more human story and that rang through

Playtest had a brilliant concept that was totally ruined in execution.

The key aspect of horror films that makes them enjoyable is that the protagonist has a chance to make it out of there alive. They struggle through awful situations and just barely survive until toward the end, when they either die or triumph. Playtest completely fucks that up by making the protagonist die before any of the horror actually happens, rendering the entire body of the episode pointless. The original Saw movie does something similar and manages to pull it off by making it a really emotional gutpunch but all the dumb twist endings in Playtest ruin any chance of that happening.

If you wanted it to have a pleb ending you go with the 'first' ending, where it was a brainwash scam the whole time. If you want it to end like a 'proper' ending you make that a fake out and he was still in the game the whole time. From here you either have a happy ending where he goes home; a sad ending where he goes home and his mom is dead because he never returned her calls; or a TWEEEST ending where he tries to unplug the thing but fucks up and they can't remove it (ie: his life is now permanently in an augmented reality where spooky shit happens).
