I'm not very familiar with her work. I'm sure she'd do fine since she's a decent actor, but I get the feeling the only reason she's picked up traction with /who/ is because she's hot. Which is the least important attribute for someone playing the Doctor. Besides all that, my biggest concern would be the writing, same as for any female Doctor.

I feel like the transition from Tennant to Smith resulted in what has been commonly referred to as "The Fairy Tale Doctor". I realize that the tone would change with every new Doctor but I feel that if they went with a female incarnation, Atwell in this instance, they would try too hard to adjust this show to accommodate her new sex rather than just focus on writing good episodes. For a one-shot, unless you hate the entire idea of Frobisher, The Holy Terror is GOAT.

For more of a commitment, start with The Marian Conspiracy. If you like Evelyn, follow all the rest of her stories chronologically from there. If you don't, skip to Jubilee and give her another try.

The Six-Mel stories are also generally better than Seven-Mel, despite what you'd expect from TV. Try Catch-1782 first.

On the other hand, Charley is better with Eight than Six, and Peri is better with FIve (and Erimem) than Six, so save them, and the later companions, for after you're sold on Colin.

Nah, the Moff hate was back in /who/'s infancy when series 7 was the latest series, but /who/ started to turn around after the 50th was generally well received, and the fact that Moff had cast Capaldi as 12 made a lot of people happy. Eventually leak/who/ happened and that was an era of unprecedented positivity on /who/. People loved the scripts and the hype and excitement was ramped up thanks to the leaks, and eventually the Moff hate could no longer survive in the ultra positive supreme comfy atmosphere of leak/who/. /who/ has been pretty positive about Moff ever since (it didn't hurt that the rest of Series 8 and Series 9 were pretty well received here)

Upon subsequent rewatchings I actually love series 7. Athough it may not have had the strongest running series plot, I absolutely adored the episode format as every single episode was it's own done in one. Okay /who/ I haven't kept up with this show in a while. Enjoyed Capaldi's first batch of episodes a lot but got pretty tired of the GoT girl being immortal and Clara dying.

I'm not going to say it was the strongest writing of all time, but in terms of being a not so serious season with great performances all around and constantly varying stories and settings I had fun. Asylum of the Daleks, Power of Three, The Snowmen, The Rings of Aketan, and Name of the Doctor were all great episodes in my book.

It was OK. I encourage you to finish that season, even though it sucks. The finale is pretty fucking good and it's the highlight of Capaldi's run so far.
Two Xmas Specials since then, one with River, another just a good old story, but nothing special. Moffat's and Peter's final series begins this year and we'll have a new Doctor and a new era by Christmas.

A fem!Doctor should be about establishing The Doctor as being beyond the flesh. The character should be written no differently, played no differently, and directed no differently from when The Doctor was male. Go ahead and cast Atwell, I'll surely watch, but make her a classically family friendly asexual Doctor. One who is less interested in her femininity and is more interested with exploring space and time.

A good way to establish these things is to cast yet another female companion. Use the companion's femininity as a foil to The Doctor's Time Lord nature. A male companion will only highlight the Doctor's actress's inherent femininity.
