In the realm of action movies where the book protagonist dies and the movie protagonist lives to have tons of sequels of varying quality, First Blood is still more upset in that the book and film actually attempt to say something about PTSD and veterans and so on but then they fucked it all up with "Rambo: The Return" and "Rambo Goes To Afghanistan"

The book didn't end with McClane dying though, it ended with him getting shot in the leg and the douchey not-Carl Winslow police captain diving in front of him and taking the bullet that would have killed him.

He then lays there, numb to the fact that his daughter was killed just earlier and bitter over the sacrifice made to preserve his unworthwhile life.
