Just finished DS9 season 1 for the first time.

Character rankings so far would be;
Bashir>Quark>O'Brien>Nog>Odo>Sisko>Jake>Kira>Dax

Favorite episode so far would have to be either A Man Alone mainly for how great the concept is or Dramatis Personae. Although, I suspect the one that gets wanked over the most would be Duet as it's certainly the best written.

I'm pretty surprised by how likable the kids are in this. After the children in TOS and TNG I was expecting total crap, but they're pretty damn good. I can never figure out if I like Kira or not, some of the time she's amazing, but whenever she resorts to bitching about her planet she's just the most annoying fucking thing in the world.

Dax feels like a lot of wasted potential. She's a very pretty actress, so she has that going for her, but from what I've seen in the show so far it sounds like the old man version of her was a whole lot more interesting. Even in the episode centered purely around her she just sits there with a blank expression on her face refusing to cooperate. She does has some kid moments of course, but I key the majority of them to Bashir being so much fun.

Kira's a mixed bag. If she was just a snarky bitch the whole time without having to constantly bring it back to the suffering of her people then I would like her a whole lot more. I get that her not being effected by it at all wouldn't be exceptional either, but the extent of it is pretty tiring. She was the character that fluctuates the most for me, either being in the upper half or dead last.

Jake's just a goofy kid who gets up to antics. If nothing else he's fun to watch and I don't mind the actor nearly as much as you seem to.

I feel like the character didn't have that much potential because of design flaws. She was written as this secured, seasoned officer who has an answer for just about anything and doesn't ever seem to find herself in anything approaching a common happenstance.

For a lack of a better formulation, she became a mary sue and the actress' lack of talent made this error obvious by season 3. She just doesn't fit that role well at all and she's about as vanilla as they come.
