I enjoyed RE7 for what it was, a glorified tech demo. I don't own VR equipment or a PC good enough to do it either, but I imagine it was probably pretty decent in VR. Maybe not genius, but I am sure it's better than a lot of other VR games on the market and might help that out. I certainly like the concept more than the 3D fad, so I'm rooting for it, but I digress.

RE7 felt like it tried to do way too many things, be too many games at the same time. Yet, among the mainline titles, it has the absolute least replay value of any of them, the first non-director's cut title included. It's the biggest regression in content I've ever seen. So you have every variety of horror tropes mashed into a few short hours. It just feels disjointed not only because of that but also because it doesn't do any of it particularly well.

I think Capcom must be smoking some good shit to claim it's returning to the series' roots. I mean, yeah it is after 6, but that's only because 6 was an action game train wreck. If I watched footage of 7 without the knowledge it was a Resident Evil game, I'd never think it was*. So they're not liars, they're just using every inch of a marketing angle when they claim a series homecoming.

*One could probably say the same thing about RE4 compared to older titles, if you blurred Leon's back and shit out.
