This was already in production when Ghostbusters went to shit.

You wouldn't know if Hollywood "learns" anything until maybe 5 years down the line. Movies are like freight trains. Takes a long time to build steam and they can't pull the breaks and stop on a dime either.

They do this because the remake and sequel trains are the most profitable.

There's a political movement in Hollywood to add women and minorities. But they don't make big box office draws in general. (Exceptions like Denzel, Will Smith, Jackie Chan are memoryholed?) So Hollywood won't get investors to bet on it without a hook.

The hook is "remember this thing that was profitable, let's make it again, but it's not a remake because this time it's all women".

They did this before with a "this time they're all black" spin. It didn't work out.
