On the one hand, the kids did terribly reckless things every chance they get so it made sense for Lois to keep a short leash on them but a lot of the kids stunts came down to suburban malaise. The kids were bored and tried to create their own excitement.

The parents should have done more to stimulate their kids rather than telling them to sit down and shut up all the time? When you treat kids like uncontrollable animals they'll behave as like them.

I understand that the parents were overworked and just wanted their kids to behave but if they'd given them more positive attention, maybe they wouldn't have acted out so much.

All the kids had talents that they should've spent time developing. The best way to keep a kid out of trouble is to find them a hobby they can put their energy into. Why were none of these kids enrolled in any sports?

Malcolm is extremely smart and could have been doing any number of things. Dewey settled right down when they discovered his aptitude for music and Reese wasn't an academic but he was a natural cook.

Reese was shown to be pretty sensitive and his bullying probably stemmed from frustration and being made to feel stupid by everyone around him.

Francis was a willful out of control child even as a baby but is also very resourceful and clever like his brothers. Sending him to military school forever painted the other boys relationship with their parents as adversarial. Parents were someone to get around, someone trying to stop you from enjoying yourself.

Lois straight up tried to make Malcolms life as boring and tedious as possible. Forcing him to work in a dead end job he hates, pressuring him to perform in school, not letting him pursue relationships.

Hals biggest crime was uninvolvement.

I’m not trying to put all the blame on the parents, who weren’t bad people but their parenting methods and relationships with their kids were the textbook definition of dysfunctional.
