Why don't film adaptations of video games ever end up being good?

Even the best of them like Mortal Kombat, Resident Evil, and Tomb Raider are still shitty movies. How hard can it be to take the premise of some of these movies and make a good movie with the same premise?

Is it because the kind of directors who would agree to make a movie based on a video game are always terrible directors?

>fantastic
>none of them had jawdropping bodies

>no characters of questionable age
It may have been a good movie (which I doubt it is) but it's not a good adaption

bad directors, bad producers, bad writers, bad source material

all video game stories are cliche, half-assed stories heavily influenced by movies in the first place

Because the people who make them have never played the game and they think they can just do whatever the fuck they want with the movie.

This will change eventually, as people who grew up with games and get them, become the ones with power in Hollywood. Like how capeshit adaptations sucked until Raimi, fantasy sucked until Jackson, etc. ie auteur-driven cinema. So far studios don't give a shit about making good movies, they just buy the rights for brand recognition and easy profits, then assign hack directors to direct them, they are products.

Silent Hill is the only halfway good example because Gans is an auteur and a fanboy who had enough creative freedom, a decent (if flawed) understanding of the material and an actual understanding of the differences between the two medium and what works in both.

There are other blockbuster auteurs who have obviously been influenced by video games and did it right: Wright, Wachowskis, Cuaron... It's just a matter of time until studios let someone like that direct a vidya adaptation, and they'll strike gold. Raimi was originally attached to Warcraft, Jackson wanted to do Halo, Wachowskis had met with Kojima and were interested in MGS... t'll happen eventually.

It's not a good movie beyond Eric Roberts and the half-caste asian whore from FnF 2.

It's a horrendous, absolutely horrendous adaption of the game.

It's a great example of a movie to show that no, fan service alone is not enough to make something good.

because they're not trying to say anything, they're cashing in on an existing fan base
even if the writer/director is trying to say something they're limited by the source material they have to work with
>>
>>78898232
>director could make an almost 1:1 adaption of the source material
>if it bombs they can blame the source material and get off scot-free
>if its a smash hit they get thrust into the spotlight and can be proud they haven't let the fans down

There're only 3 types of directors anon.
Sellouts, "Artists" and Passionates.

Every /v/ director is a sellout or "artist" which never works.

Prince of Persia was retro kino, if it came out a decade earlier it would of been a cult classic.
