This is a classic case of his writing not matching his production reality.

$60k is cheap for a feature film, so you have to work within limits to make a professional production. For instance, creatively use a few locations you know you can eat cheap, and make the drama match that. Don't make your film a sci-fi epic unless you're talented at effects and can spend years on post, like Monsters.

Linkara wanted to make his Star Trek sequel, so all the money gets funneled into making his starship ($24k is a little high, given the paint job, but I've seen much higher for less in the industry), and renting the studio for it, and that leaves no money for the aspects of production that would make that set work - camera, lighting, professional tech people.

Of course, I don't know how you could make any kind of movie about Linkara work at all. Maybe if you set it in his hometown, about an obsessed comic book reviewer, maybe some kind of self-aware analysis in a Mallrats-vibe. Maybe Linkara could work as a supporting super-geek character.

Actually no, I'm sure doing the super serious space opera is a much better idea.

Doug made unfunny jokes and incredibly dated references, substituted references in place of jokes and didn't give a fuck about his incredibly bloated cast that had nothing to do.
However, it also had most of the cast just not giving a fuck and hamming it up, and was so ridiculously bad that it can be funny to mock repeatedly.

Linkara makes practically no attempt at jokes, takes it 100% seriously and when he's no having other characters suck his ego off, he goes on "dramatic" monologues every 5 fucking minutes. THERE HAVE BEEN AT LEAST 15 OF THE FUCKING THINGS ALREADY.
The actors playing comic relief are phoning it in even worse that in Doug's and aren't even chewing the scenery in an enterianing way, and the poor bastards saddled with being super serious simply can't do anything with the godawful material
You can't make jokes about how awful it is, because it's just a black hole of entertainment that sucks in any attempt at mockery, leaving nothing but emptiness and a desire to get the last X minutes of your life back.

Supporting characters exist only to ask deep questions to Linkara's roles, to prompt deep monologues about their backstory and feelings.
