At what age do people stop staying in hostels? It seems everyone there are in their early 20s

>tfw you finally have money to travel but now you're too old to stay in a hostel
>>
Around the time they die. I'm 40 and still occasionally stay in hostels. And I don't feel old in them.
>>
>>1292747
It's to do with attitude, not age. If you want privacy and comfort and get cranky if you have to rough it a bit, you're too old for a hostel. If you have a good attitude and you like being around new folk, and you can handle more basic accommodation, you won't have a problem.
>>
30 is about the cutoff. Feels really cringey when old geezers are in the room.
>>
>>1292747
I know a dude in his late 40's who still stays in hostels while traveling eastern europe

He mostly keeps to himself, and doesnt like spending money.
>>
Varies greatly. Some hostels I felt old at 27, others I felt young at 30. Also depends on destination.
>>
>>1292814
>being so insecure about what other people think you experience second hand embarrassment from vicariously imagining yourself at their age.

Wew emu. Enjoy growing up.
>>
>>1292818
This. I stayed in hostels at 35. Amsterdam was a nightmare while Munich and Berlin were chill. Depends on the hostel and the crowd it attracts. I would do your research.
>>
you will be fine at 30 if you can stand all the annoying people there

Thirding.
I still stay in hostels, but I'm much more likely to stay in a little Mom & Pop hostel or a non-profit YHA than some big, silly party hostel.

That was really well said anon.
My response was going to be juvenile and useless. I will just endorse yours instead.

I'm surprised you know how to use a keyboard.

Im 35, I still stay in hostels if Im solo travelling.. on occasion I feel like the weird old guy, but it doesnt matter, Im just sleeping there. If the dorm is particularly bad I'll upgrade to private room.. but that usually only happens if I find the group obnoxious, not because they are young.. Who doesn't want 18 yo girls prancing around the room in their underwear?

This.

In Lima I shared a room with an architect in his 60s.

Good grief that's one horrible shop.

It's not a shop, it's an illusion
>>
I see older people staying in hostels all the time. As long as you don't have kids, staying in a hostel is not an issue at any age barring maybe 50-60+ where you start to inconvenience everyone with your stench of death. But 20-40 is totally ok and seems reasonably normal, there's not really an age limit on being frugal, you'll just have a worse experience as your older body can't handle shitty mattresses and people who stay up late at night drinking and whatever.
>>
26/7 or wherever the youth hostel card expires is a pretty good rule of thumb
>>
Some of the most interesting people I've met in hostels have been middle-aged.

One was a 45-year old retired engineer from Australia who hated his job, filed to get out early, and decided to hitchhike from Melbourne to Portugal. He went island hopping on fishing boats in Indonesia and thumbed through Afghanistan. He had a ton of money and said sometimes he stayed in fancy hotels and sometimes in hostels.

Another was former Canadian special forces and was an all-around chill guy.

Neither was creepy or tried to hit on 20-year old girls or pretend like they were still a kiddo backpacker. Funnily enough, both of them got a hilarious amount of attention from young backpacker girls.

I'm 29. I stay in nothing but hostels in American cities because it's like minded people like me. Minimalist travelers all have a certain bond that no one else has. Age has nothing to do with it. I've met 21 year olds and I've met 40 year olds. Who cares? We're all mostly traveling as minimalist adventurers. Literally no one cares how old you are unless you physically can't get onto a top bunk or something.
>>
>>1293408
minimalist travelers...

i'm guessing a commonality is that all of you need minimal money monthly to maintain the hobby?
>>
>>1293408
>minimalist adventurer
You're a backpacker tourist, m8. Nothing to be ashamed of.
>>
>>1293953

>tfw hate hostel and backpacker "lol weed bro" and "yoga man" culture

>tfw stay in hostels because I'm too poor to afford anything else, save for in the most impoverished of countries

I hope this feel ends once I graduate and earn some decent money.
>>
What if you are an introvert who doesn't really like socialising, but who manages to look and act like a normie?
>>
Is there any alternative to hostels to meet people? I'm going to be 29 when I can afford to travel and I don't want to be around some dumb 21 year olds

I'm going to to check out the club scene

Sorry breh. I'm a grown ass man with a 5 figure travel budget and I'm not about to dorm in bunk beds with a bunch of wack ass teenagers
>>
>>1294049
So you're going to go out with them instead?
>>
>>1292747
I don't know, I'm 38 and I still stay in them.

If the market offered alternatives to sleeping in my car, or if there were more capsule hotels like in Tokyo I'd do that but until then I will continue to stay in hostels.

All I want is a clean bed/shelf to sleep on and a functioning toilet and shower. I travel to travel, not to blow 80% of my budget on a hotel I willl never be in except around bed time, and I can find my own food thanks.

I might consider looking into AirBnB, but it was banned in the the last place I wanted to go, and not quite legit at the time in Cuba...
>>
>>1294059
Yes and that's not a problem because I don't have to live with them. You do
>>
>>1294070
Still not legit in Cuba but used them earlier this year, they basically have someone outside of Cuba operating the airbnb page and when you book they call up homeowner to let them know you are on the way.

Still sketchy and ended up getting lost a few times because the address on the airbnb page was wrong
>>
>>1294025
check into your room, then leave the hostel and only return when you go to bed.

What you should be doing anyway, there's always more to see in the big wide world
>>
>>1292747
biggest problem with hostels are cunt asses who spread shit like the flu, just got knocked out for 2 weeks. goddamnit
>>
>>1292747
I feel like every hostel I have ever used has had a couple of little old Dutch or Scandinavian ladies in it--women in their 50s or 60s. Sometimes couples, too.

So basically, no age limit. I'm in my 40s and don't often stay in hostels, but not because of my decrepitude, just because I like private toilets. But if I'm somewhere where hotels are really overpriced (I'm looking at you, Moscow and Oslo), I will use hostels without hesitation.
>>
>>1294035
I have met and had enjoyable conversations with lots of people in backpacker bars--basically, look for places to eat and drink in the tourist ghetto and it's not hard to meet people. I'm not even especially outgoing and it has always worked for me.
>>
>>1292747

I'm staying in a hostel in Wrigleyville in Chicago this weekend, at the age of 36.

Not going to lie, I feel a little apprehensive about it. But it was just SO much less expensive than anything else. And, I'll never be there other than to sleep. It also helps that I look ten years younger than I am and know how to be appropriately social.

(Chat fun and intelligently when the situation calls for it, not trying to pick up 22 year-old chicks, etc.)
>>
If the hostel advertises itself as a party hostel, you're going to feel old there at 25-26ish.
Otherwise, oldfags are usually interesting more than obnoxious.
>>
>>1292747
I'm turning 34 next month, still stay in hostels whenever I travel. I actually worked in one for a few months in Korea back when I was 28, and there was no shortage of people in their 30s. In fact one Korean guy there was 39 and had no shortage of attention from the younger girls (although to be fair he was a K-Chad).

I'm planning on heading to SE Asia in a couple of months, will definitely stay at hostels again. It's really the only way I know to meet people when traveling these days (I despise bars).

Party hostels are the best ones.
