hey /trv/ i don't really post on here a lot but i'm moving to mainland china in september. i'm moving to quanzhou; what should i expect in terms of food/people/transportation/nightlife/dating/access to vidya (i only play retro games so i think i should be good)

All I can say is get a transfer to Shanghai as soon as possible. It's the only livable city in mainland China
>>
>>1284960

shanghai is like packed to the brim with people, how is it livable?
>>
>>1284960
you are exaggerating a bit

shanghai you pay western pricrs for a less than western standard of living

>>1284714
dont know anything about quanzhou, but if you even did a little honework the others should already have borne yoh answers

dont expect an market for vidya. many girls you date will be hookers because you will treat them like hookers and they are aware of your behavior.

food is hit or miss. be careful of adulterants.

transport is fairly efficient but you need basic familiarity with hanzi to figure out the schrjdules

people are generally nice, but dont get hit by a car. anyone who helps you becomes liable for you under socialist law. so they dont help
>>
>>1285134

yeah i don't plan on treating anyone like a hooker lol. i'm going to china to teach english and then on the side study Taoism and Buddhism, I'm a fairly conservative person. but thanks for the assumption
>>
>>1285134

i was looking mainly for information from someone living in china. do you live there? just wondering what its like before i go, i guess.
>>
>>1285166
you are welcome. foreigners have earned it. stereotypes have truth to them and no one will treat you like a special snowflake, and i am nit impressed by your desire to study taoism and buddhism, least of all because you conflate them. you might as well say youre studying christianity and paganism. I've only once or twice been impressed by a foreigners grasp of estern religion

if you are a nice guy be aware you will date many hookers who are acting nice. girls generally date for marriage and expect to marry in a year or 2. if you fuck them and dont marry them you WILL have treated them like a hooker

dont get offended by my warning. learn from it.
>>
>>1285172
i have before

foreigners get bored often enough. life is simple. there is only a very barebones consumer market infrastructure, even in taiwan it is rather barebones compared to what shopping crazy westerners generally prefer

social life involves mostly circles of friends. you might feel out of place if you cant speak mandarin. even if you speak mandarin man places thry prefer the local dialect and speaking mandarin with then or forcing them to use mandarin to accomodate you will make things... not awkward, but not completely natural. it prevents integration.

people are generally nice. be aware you will mostly only talk yo people eho already like foreigners. the people who hate you you will never even see.

food can be dirty. be selective.

dont get hit by a car

i really like some parts of china but it drives everyone crazy on occaision

be prepared to have to deal withcompletely alien values. if you try and force issues such as gay marriage or drug legalization they will 100 percent hate you
>>
>>1285173
LOL I'm not conflating them I meant I'm studying them separately, the link being they're both Chinese (Taoism and specifically Chan, i have a degree in Chinese philosophy) but honestly whatever you seem to have some serious issues.

>quanzhou
I wouldn't be too worried, it's in a rich province with gorgeous scenery, it's just that history passed it by. It was once one of the most glorious cities in the world but only at just the right time.

Anyway, you're 90minutes from Xiamen, you could probably ride there in a few hours on a good bike. So that's a place to spend your time off if you want to party or shop for imported goods.

Xiamen is nice, good place to spend your weekend, or whenever you have off from work.

Gaming is fine, Steam works and has Chinese servers for fast downloads too. You sometimes need a vpn to access the store but not always, not sure why.

wow an actually helpful, non judgemental comment, thanks anon

I want to add to this a little bit.
I have lived in Xiamen for half a year on a student visa.

I know this might not be usefull to you OP, but it might.

This city and the region is perfect for motorbike riding. Owning a car in china is a pain, because all parking is paid, so it add up a bit.

Trains trams and busses are okay, but driving a motorcycle opens up the country side alot, adding afeeling of freedom, which is refreshing in a country that can sometimes feel a little restricting. I can recommend.

Also learn little chinese, it will endear you to the locals. You will never be seen as anything other than a foreigner, but it can open some doors.

Sorry of this advixe was useless to you.

I've been to the region before too. The negative comments on here are hilarious. I've heard Quanzhou is a bit industrial or factory style or something. I had some friends from there, they just told me it was a small city. Another tourist told me if you want to see old school buildings and a less touristy area of fujian province quanzhou is the place to be, but it gets boring after a few days. I can confirm Xiamen is a fun city and it has some of the cleanest air in China.

The main thing is that you are going to Fujian province which is just a cool province. There are tons of little spots to have excursions and it has a lot of culture. Tea is big there, the word tea actually comes from a Fujian dialect. They are also big on coffee, which is a good thing to have in Asia. You also have the Tulou roundhouses, from Kung Fu hustle relatively nearby. Even if you hate Quanzhou if you like to travel you could find a few things to do once or twice a month during your off time. It's just a beautiful province and riding through the countryside watching the green scenery out the window is a good escape in and of itself.

I remember traffic in Xiamen was the worst I experience in China though, not sure about Quanzhou. Southern Chinese tend to be a bit more aggressive and blunt too, so be ready for that.

You will also be on the East Coast rail circuit, so you can catch trains north or south and explore some interesting cities.

nah this was great, merci beacoup mon ami

I'm really glad to hear that as I'm somewhat of a sinophile and would absolutely to check out some old buildings and historic spots. also i'm glad to hear the area is nice and not a drag. thanks anon
