what would you do /trv/?
>>
>what would you do /trv/?
I go to Romania and spend 10€ a night for a shitty motel room. Or, if I feel like splurging a little, 20€ for a 3-4* hotel/guesthouse, breakfast included.
>>
Staying in my first hostel-like Airbnb in two weeks. I'm a budget traveler. I don't give a fuck about luxuries. I literally travel for the experiences.

Why spend all that money on a hotel when you could use that money for another plane ticket or train ticket to wherever you want to explore.
>>
>>1277786
check the reviews for hostels, find one with an early curfew that doesn't encourage partying. avoid hostels that encourage partying. it's pretty simple.
>>
>>1277786
>what would you do /trv/?
I would book a *private* room at a hostel. Costs more than a shared room, but less than a real hotel. It's what I did last time.
>>
newbie trying to plan travel abroad

I don't think I really understand how the hostel system works

what do you do to keep your stuff safe? are there lockers anywhere?

When you go out (let's say you're only traveling with a large backpack) do you take your whole pack with you, or do you leave it at the hostel while you're gone.

I like to trust people but I feel like hostels are going to, statistically speaking, attract a more morally flawed demographic.

Basically, any tips?
>>
>>1277809
Not all hostels are the same, but they may have different security options.

Some of them might have lockers. Others might have bag checking at reception.
>>
It obviously depends on your age, travel purpose, companions, spending power and price of the location.
Generally I can deal with hostels when visiting expensive as fuck cities or with mates, but I'll definitely get hotels if travelling with my gf or in inexpensive places.
>>
>>1277786
>loud roommates
The only people that are loud are Israelis and Americans. Check reviews to avoid hostels with Americans and Israelis. Loud roommates can be avoided by not staying at designated party hostels.

>unclean bathrooms
Check reviews to see if bathrooms are clean. Only cheap hostels have dirty bathrooms.

>having to secure all your shit in case it gets stolen
You have to do the same thing in a hotel. There's hostel lockers and if there are none you can leave your stuff with the reception. I haven't had anything stolen and I carry expensive electronics and nice clothes.

>sleeping in the same room as strangers
You never had a one night stand had you?

>unclean beds and potentially even bedbugs
This is a meme. Most mattresses nowadays are covered in plastic so bedbugs cannot happen. Bedbugs are like muslim terrorists and plane accidents. One in a lifetime chance.

>>1277809
It's really rare to hear that stuff is stolen and the only times I heard it happen was either in transit or in the hostel when they didn't secure their shit. Usually there are lockers where you can put your electronics. A thief obviously isn't interested in your clothes also when you are staying in hiking areas you should try to secure that stuff as well. Usually I take a good look at the locker, if it can be opened in any way without damaging the lock or of it would make a lot of noice breaking it open. Locks are easily picked if you know what you are doing but you should get a combination lock to feel extra safe. The main demographic of travelers is white European men and women so I wouldn't really worry about theft if I was you. A lot of hostels don't allow local people to stay in their hostel. When I feel there is a sketchy traveler I leave my stuff at the reception. The further away from Europe you are the better. I don't think someone would fly to South America or Japan to prey on backpackers. Hostel theft isn't planned but happens because of money problems usually.
>>
>>1277786
i would stop being a retard and use airbnb
>>
>>1277890
>Most mattresses nowadays are covered in plastic

I'm actually pretty upset by this. I used to scout out which bunk the most attractive girl in the hostel was sleeping in. If she checked out before me I would always request to have her bunk as soon as she was out the door. If I was lucky she do one of those early morning departures and I could get a quick nap in her still warm sleeping space. Only got the people working at the hostel looking at me funny a few times when I told them not to worry about cleaning bc I was tired and I just liked that bunk better. Now with the plastic it's just not the same.
>>
>>1277902

Holy shit are you one rapey motherfucker. Maybe you should post on Reddit more...
>>
>>1277786
A cheap hotel is not a guarantee for:
-Clean beds
-Clean toilets
-Getting shit stolen by cleaning ladies
-Loud neighbors/shit neighborhood.

For travel purposes I'll always prefer a decent/good hostel over a cheap hotel even if the price about the same.
>>
>>1277809
>what do you do to keep your stuff safe? are there lockers anywhere?
I tend to book hostels that have a (small) locker that can fit at least my daypack and valuables I won't bring during the day. Main bag can often stay outside of the locker if it doesn't fit, since it will only have crap like (dirty) clothes in it. Don't leave valuables out, that's not just advice for hostels but anywhere.

>When you go out (let's say you're only traveling with a large backpack) do you take your whole pack with you, or do you leave it at the hostel while you're gone.
If you don't need it during the day, leave it at the hostel. You might want to take your laptop/valuables with you if leaving it unattended in a locker and it will bug you all day.

>I like to trust people but I feel like hostels are going to, statistically speaking, attract a more morally flawed demographic.
What statistic are you using? I feel like you're just imagining these numbers.
Most people are just regular people with morals. Thieves and assholes are everywhere so just don't leave your valuable stuff unattended and don't be stupid. But that's advice for everywhere.
>>
>>1277809
>what do you do to keep your stuff safe? are there lockers anywhere?
Most hostels have lockers and you put down a deposit for a lock at the reception. They know security is an issue so usually try and cater to that however most people I would say aren't going to steal your things, just regular travellers.

>When you go out (let's say you're only traveling with a large backpack) do you take your whole pack with you, or do you leave it at the hostel while you're gone.
The lockers are usually large enough to hold a large bag. Its a good idea to bring a smaller travel bag for little things like wallets, chargers, maps, sun cream, water and snacks.

>I like to trust people but I feel like hostels are going to, statistically speaking, attract a more morally flawed demographic.
You're 100% right, people might be taking fat chances with other guests, you just have to be vigilant and keep your items locked up at all times. In my experience doing this nothing has ever gone wrong.

Also to those who are a bit private and scared of all the other people you share with, generally i've noticed guests in hostels keep to themselves and do their own thing. Unless you make conversation with another the chances you speaking to them are actually quite slim.

Also, general tips; make sure the hostel is close to public transport, trams, buses etc. Make life 1000x easier and more pleasant experience. Might be nice if the hostel provides a basic breakfast as well just to avoid spending too much elsewhere.

Hostels are nothing to be intimidated by, they are usually safe, secure, and very pleasant for what you pay, after all they are a business and they seek to make your experience as smooth as possible to get you coming back.

>I literally travel for the experiences.

Wew lad.

ALWAYS book hotel rooms unless your under 24 and broke as fuck.

I'm nearing in on 30 now and can't ever imagine why I ever stayed in a hostel outside being broke as fuck to begin with. Now I won't travel unless its reasonable 4+ stars.

As you get older but your job allows for this much more easily and you start to enjoy coming back to a nice hotel after a full day of treking about and relaxing.

If your budget allows for it without missing out on other things, its simple book a hotel.

If your young and going to be pissing up every night of the week with no care for relaxation or privacy and you don't feel hang over for a week when you get on the booze an drugs yet get a hostel.

>>1277902
I actually believe this. But I don't find this as creepy as the 30 year old's that used to venture hostels still trying to score 18 year old girls.
>>
>>1277786
Spend 10€ on Airbnb for a clean and cozy bed with a comforting host or 20€ on an entire flat to myself.

I've also never had a negative experience with a hostel so far. Only "bad" experience is when I couldn't keep my own alcohol and rotten kebab down but that's my own fault.
>>
>>1277980
>all you do in your room should be sleeping and using the bathroom
why pay for something more expensive when you don't need to?

take those hundreds of dollars you save and spend it on nice meals or something, treat yourself
>>
>>1277986
Because I enjoy a king size bed with beautiful aircon laugh at the local movies on a nice tv while answering work emails and feeling relaxed in a shower I won't get tinea from.

As you get older travel is just as much about relaxing as it is exploring. As old as I realise that's making me sound right now I never imagined wanting to go from spending $20 a night to $300 a night for a bed either when I was younger.
>>
>>1277988
Yeah you are right, when you are traveling while still needing to do a little work, hotels are perfect. And in some countries hotel rooms are like a breath of fresh air. In india, youneed to get away from the dirt once in a while, upscale hotels allow you to do just that.
>>
>>1277986
Standard hotels in majority of countries are like what, between $50-100. If you are working all year long and travel for a week or two why would you want to have your trip potentially ruined by snoring dorm mates or theft. I stay in hostels because I'm a student and come on, you know exactly where the difference between a hostel and hotel is.

Of course if you travel for one month or two it would be crazy expensive but for short trips there's nothing wrong with hotels.

I stayed at
1. Pensiunea Anka in Cenad, 100 lei (22€) per night for one person, 120 lei per night for two persons per night, breakfast included (http://www.cazarecenad.ro)
2. A shitty motel on the European Road 70, between Lugoj and Caransebes, 50 lei (11€)/night, no website
3. Guesthouse in Arieseni, 70 lei (15€) a night, breakfast included, no website
4. Random invitation from a Romanian couple to spend the night at their place, in a village near Petrila, breakfast included, 0€

You genereally can't find these cheap places on the internet, let alone expect the owners to speak English. There's plenty of ridiculously cheap accomodation all across the country though.
Prices for Bulgaria and Serbia are similar as long as you don't go straight to Belgrade. I spent a night at a 3* Hotel in Donji Milanovac for 18€.

if you wanted to meet people, are hostels best?

>tfw traveling alone
>tfw 30 years old (and only earn an average income)
not looking for girls, i'm a socially awkward kv so doubt i will be able to pick up a girl anyways

how would i meet people if I stayed at a hotel?
>>
A hostel or any roof and shower is a luxury. Spend any time in a tent or a van or an rv and you will know it to be true.

Save the flash hotels for occasional date nights or for once you have decided to be old. Travel is a lot cheaper than it seems. I have background in the infantry so even a blow up bed in a tent seems like a luxary
>>
I like staying in hostels when traveling solo, mostly for the social aspect. It can get lonely on your own 24/7, and there's usually at least one or two cool people to talk to and discuss your travels in each dorm.

I check the reviews before I book up, so I only stay in hostels with decent hygiene and avoid the ones with a "party" atmosphere so I can get a decent nights sleep.
Securing my shit is no problem, the only valuables I take are ones that I can have on my person at all times so I've never had issues with theft.

The price is a big bonus, too. Maybe when I'm older I'll want more luxury, but right now I'm young and hardy.

>>1277809
Most hostels have lockers, but check beforehand to make sure. There is sometimes a fee to use them, sometimes they're free if you bring your own padlock.
I leave my pack at the hostel, and keep my valuables(phone, passport, money) on my person at all times. If someone in the hostel is desperate enough to steal my unwashed clothes or half a tube of toothpaste then fuck it, they can have them.

Though I've never had any problems. Hostel crime isn't as common as you might expect. That said, it's still worth taking some precautions to stay safe.
>>
>>1278075
Yes, you'd be very lonely at a hotel. Hostels are great for that.
>>

>>
>>1277786
Hostel, of course. Because 50$ hotel is expensive as fuck when you earn only $400 per month. Being ukrainian web-programmer is suffering.
>>
>>1277790
Question, what experiences are you talking about? I've traveled dirt poor and pretty much hated it. I've traveled and stayed in 5 star hotels and loved it. I much prefer staying in the nice hotels.
>>
>>1277898
This. It's the same or very slightly more than a shitty hostel/dorm bed for an entire fucking apartment to yourself.

I got one in Tokyo specifically so that we could have hungover lazy days of eating weird shit and watching tv we couldn't understand.
>>
>>1277786
I check reviews and alternate between hostels and airbnbs/hotels on my trip. Or if the hostel has private rooms, just book that

There is no reason to not believe me really, I have conversations with this stuff with other guys all the time. Thing is I just have the balls to act on my impulses. It's not rapey either, the girl knowingly rents out a bed in a public space and it's not her business what happens to that bed after she leaves. Not only that, but I would probably seek legal action if a hostel actually tried to prevent me from renting her bunk after she left. There is nothing that says I can't do that, and nothing that says women are so privileged that their bunks should be sterilized before anyone else can sleep in them.
>>

Rarely an issue, 90% of the time I am only coming back to the hostel to sleep after a busy day. Also most all have ear plugs, or wear your headphones.
>unclean bathrooms
Never had an issue with this, even with some of the lowest end hostels I've stayed at they have usually a clean enough bathroom
>having to secure all your shit in case it gets stolen
Most hostels have a desk you can check shit into
>sleeping in the same room as strangers
Are you 12? You'll sleep on a train/plane/bus/etc with strangers, but crash in a bed with other people in a room is too weird?
>unclean beds and potentially even bedbugs
Only legit concern, but hotels can have the same issue. Double check ratings for the hostel on google and other sites, generally you will see multiple reviews about this if it is an issue.

>what would you do /trv/?

Because I read reviews of the hostel before hand on multiple sites, and pay a forth of what I would pay for a hotel.

Escorts have your consent.
And sex is considered a normal physiological necessity.

Getting off a girl's warm bed is just sexually deviant behaviour. You should get your head checked and stop making up excuses for your degenerate behaviour.
>>
>>1278710
You can book hostels through airbnb. If I book airbnb it is usually because I want something more private than a hostel.

Just read reviews on the host, a good amount of hosts (especially in japan) will often spend time with you and chill.
>>
>>1278713
As I said before, nowhere in the contract those girls sign did it guarantee that a person couldn't sleep in their bed immediately after they checked out. If they want to sleep in public dorms, then an admirer from afar that wants to just get closer to them than he will ever be able to any other time is the least of their worries. I find it hilarious that you somehow think encouraging a woman to sell her body for money is more respectful than just sleeping in a bed after her because you have an overwhelming infatuation. Most of these girls don't even know it happened, and if they did they would probably shrug it off. It's harmless, legal, and at the end of the day it just makes my life a little better. Maybe you should back off and accept that it's different strokes for different folks.

>>
>ITT: losers who can't get laid complaining about loud hostels

oh yeah buddy tell all your friends about how you pay whores for sex in poor countries and watch how they think you are so normal. I don't hide my affection for women from my friends, they know i'm just on another level when it comes to appreciating females. Of course I don't ramble on about the stuff I do to satisfy this part of personality but they already know it's probably not the typical behavior.

All that said though, I will state again that I am in no way violating a womans rights or personal space by doing this. Women sit in seats for prolonged periods of time quite often, do you stare at their seat after they get up to make sure no one sits in it after them? Would it even matter to you if someone did just sit in a chair in a workplace to feel the warmth a woman has left in it? Maybe you just need better things to do with your time, hidden cameras and cruising for prostitutes is the weird perve territory. I'm just doing something that is perfectly legal and easy to understand if you would open your closed mind and think about it for a few seconds.
