I personally felt that schools were well structured, I think you'll do fine if you apply yourself and all the rest. Take it as an opportunity to speak German and get better in it, nothing beats immersion. I've only been in schooling briefly in eastern Germany, but have spent considerable time in Germany/Austria, so I can't tell you much about school as I can about culture. As far as 'standoffish' goes, I would say maybe a bit, but it's not jarring and you'll learn to adjust well if you're reasonable.

Standoffnish? Yep, totally. I'm german, my friends are german and like 90% of us are uncomfortable when a stranger wants to talk. If you're searching for the "Hey dude!what's up?" type of convo, you won't have high chances to get a good convo; even with girls. But most of us like to drink. Think of a mid-european version of the finnish.
Yet as always: It depends. I'm talking about
southern Bavaria (munich) right now, which isn't certainly fully representative for the rest of germany..
