Ok, so I'm starting to look for my next winter getaway,

panama is a little odd in that it doesn't have a central highland, panama city is the nicest capital in the area, a bit of a second class miami for the region

over half the country lives around the canal, other cities are pretty forgettable, they really promote going to some native islands

with the heavy american development and currency, it's expensive for the area and you have little foreign cache

the city and canal are worth doing, but I wouldn't spend much time there other than that, if you can handle colombia you'll find panama a bit boring
