I'm planning a trip to Seattle and I want to add a second city to the trip. Should I pick Portland or Vancouver?

I had a friend take a comparable trip to the Pacific Northwest. She said that Portland was very, very disappointing and that Seattle was a much better city overall. She loved Vancouver. So, Vancouver I guess.

Not OP but doing a similar thing. Will be in the Seattle area for 6 full days in August. I want to split it between Seattle and Vancouver but am not sure how many days to allocate for each.

In terms of natural landmarks, I would like to see the Pacific Ocean and Mt. Rainier. I don't have any specific city sights I want to see apart from the major parts that everyone goes to, although I would also like to visit a casino at some point.

I'm thinking of doing 4 days in Seattle and 2 days in Vancouver. That way I can limit the amount of time I have to rent a car as well since the costs quickly add up. Does this sound about right?

Portlander here,

Vancouver is better

Pacific Ocean is a long way from Seattle. It's like a 4+ hour drive to the coast. The scenery is amazing mind you but you'd have to spend a night somewhere unless you want to just look at a beach and go back to the city.

I'd also say that Vancouver has more interesting sights than Seattle. I find Seattle a bit boring, it doesn't have anything special like San Fran does for example. Vancouver on the other hand has quite a lot of interesting sights right next to it and in the city itself.

As for Portland, it really only appeals to a certain type of person. It's very grungy. I like it but I find the city tries too hard to be "grungy" and doesn't do it in a natural way like some other cities do.

This. And if you want to spent a bit of time in a dirtier, more working PNW city than Seattle, you can do it in Tacoma much easier. And it someone wanted to include Mt. Rainier and the ocean, it would serve as a good overnight halfway point.

Yeah after some consideration I would probably break it up to do 2 to 3 days in Seattle proper, then set aside 1 day to visit Mt. Rainier and the surrounding park, and the remaining 2 to 3 days in Vancouver. That way I can limit the span of time I have to rent a car for as well.

I've lived in seattle a long time. Kirkland has nice parks and isn't far.
Memos is a really good restaurant
Dicks is overrated greaseglobs
If u have a car and want a scenic drive; Leavenworth is a really pretty destination.
Mt. Pilchuck is a fun day hike and is popular. I just did it on the 4th.

This is Edmonds marina beach. It's where I've always gone to hang out. You can catch a ferry to the peninsula and drive to to the olympics or the coast from Kingston. Or Bremerton if you ferry from Seattle.

If u decide to check this beach out, make sure to be cautious around trains and the security that follows them a few minutes afterwards checking for trespassers. It can be very secluded and I've never gotten in trouble with the security there.
Edmonds is a really nice town.

Mt rainier is beautiful but kind of a pain and the view of it from a distance is enough for me.

disregard this OP. Kirkland is not the kind of place you want to visit on your vacation, it's just a random suburb of Seattle. Memos is not a good restaurant, but you might like it if you think taco bell is good cuisine. Dicks isn't my cup of tea either but then again I don't even like burgers. I hear it's good though.

Vancouver > Portland imo, and if you have the time you should take the ferry over to Vancouver island and visit Victoria. Also if you have extra time the Sea-to-sky highway north of Vancouver is very beautiful.

That's rainier back there

Btw Edmond's marina beach park isn't off limits but some very nice areas are and they are easy to access

:/

I like memos a lot

Kirkland is much better than the other Seattle suburbs imo. Edith Moulton park has a few nesting owls atm. Also has a cute lil rock labyrinth. St Edwards park is nice too.

But that's pretty irrelevant in a thread about touristy stuff near Seattle. Other anon was right, Kirkland is just another suburb of Seattle. There's no reason to suggest Kirkland because there's nothing there for tourists. The same goes for Edmonds. A tourist really has nothing to see in either place that can't also easily be experienced somewhere else. No tourist travels to check out random suburbs.

That makes sense. I personally haven't travelled much and I'm new to this board so I should have lurked moar before posting. My family and I have tried to avoid tourist traps on a lot of our vacations so that's kind of the mentality I have. I like driving a lot too so when we do go places I like exploring the highways and nearby cities and towns.
