I want to go to Greece in mid-late august.
I'm 23, going alone.
I have never traveled alone, I've only been out of America one time.
I want to see as much of it as possible and, of course as budget friendly as possible. Not afraid to rough it sometimes.

So question time and I'm sure you guys could help me w some insight:
Since I want to see a lot of the country, including islands.
Any tips on the best places to visit/ most recommended locations?
How to travel within the country? do they have trains or buses? (rough cost of this)
Should I maybe fly in to one side of Greece and fly out from another? If so, how can I do this? Can I determine where I want to leave when I get there, like an open-ended return deal?
If my itinerary isn't set in stone, how/ where should I sleep at night?

I'd like a nice mix of outdoors and seclusion there and also seeing some of the more prominent city-scape cultures. How long would you take for a trip like this?
Thanks so much for any advice.

go ask on reddit or lonely planet /trv/ is dead

You're asking a lot of very general questions, /trv/ works better when you have some specific doubts about your trips, most of the things you asked could be answered by doing some research on google

Also Greece is suprisingly not very popular on these board, despite being one of the most beautiful country in europe i've never seen it mentioned that much. I guess it's considered too normie for the average /trv/ user, who prefer to spend his time in North Korea or hitchiking in some baltic town forgotten by God

I've been to greece several times when i was a kid, here are some advices

- Athens is nice but very chaotic, Thessaloniki is shit. Generally the big cities have not much to offer, better go to the islands and the small coastal towns
- dont know about buses or train, but i can tell you that in the balkans trains sucks (at least in my personal experience) and its better to rely onbuses, theyre cheaper and faster
- Cool places to visit: Crete, Zante, Cefalonia, Mykonos (very touristic) mount athos

Sorry for not being more helpful, but it's still better than nothing. Also i'm sure you'll find a lot of infos if you use google a bit, there are a lot of good itineraries about greece

other nice places, all islands: Zacinto, Samo, Chio (i'm using the italian names here, the greek ones are probably different)

Don't go to sparta, the city is really small and there areno ruins or anything related to the old Sparta. In crete, be sure to check agios nikolaos and Heraklion

Food: the yogurt with honey is amazing, the moussaka is very nice, and then there's the souvlaki, wich is like a shish kebab, but with more spices and herbs. They put everywhere their damn sauce made with yogurt and cucumber, despite being a fan of yogurt I really hated that one. Oh and be sure to try Rakia (a liquor) and Greek coffee (coffe mixed with ice)

I enjoyed Corfu, you might wanna go there.

It's too pricey, that's why it's not popular.

Here's a specific question: Help how do I join Golden Dawn?
>>
Never really travelled on a budget in Greece so can't be totally helpful. Would recommend it though, if you like food, coffee, history and relaxing in the sun it's a great place.

August is probably the most expensive time to go to Greece. Personally I would usually go in early September.

Eating out is pretty cheap in Greece (buying groceries on the islands can be expensive).

If I remember correctly, you can get a bus from Athens to Agios Constantinos and a ferry from there to Skiathos. It's a lot more chilled than some of the more famous islands. Not much for nightlife but very pretty.

If you want a quiet island, with a laidback feeling, nice beaches with crystal clear water, and not a tourist trap, go to Ithaca, you can get there via ferry from Corfu, Kefalonia, or Patra

When I went in 2010, here was our route, fly into Corfu from London (we were on a big trip, I'm Greek Australian), stayed for a while, loved the old city, Corfu has some of the best museums in Greece imo, I liked the Archaelogical and the Byzantine Museums. We then caught a ferry to Kefalonia (Cephalonia, whatever), I liked the Melissani Cave, but there might be tourists there. Then we caught the ferry to Ithaca, We stayed in Kioni, nice and picturesque. Then we caught the ferry to Patras, we stayed at the casino, Church of St Andrew is a must. We rented a car and drove around the Peloponnese, going to Olympia, Sparta, I really liked Nafplion, very nice. Kalamata had great beaches too. I thought Monemvasia was cool. We then drove up to Volos and Kalambaka, the beaches in Volos were good and the churches in Kalambaka were great. Drove further up to Thessaloniki, I thought it was ok, caught the bus to Istanbul (I'll skip this part, we toured the Aegean coast of Turkey), get back to Istanbul, get on a ferry, go to Mykonos, it was ok, I was young tho, Patmos, Santorini (overrated), Rhodes was good, I loved the merge of cultures, I wish we stayed longer in Crete, so much to do, beach, art, ruins, culture, wine. We then went to Athens, I liked Athens, idk why people say it's dirty, Rome was way dirtier.
