Plan on $80 per night.
Our hostels aren't much cheaper.
Welcome to the states, enjoy your visit.

Depends, hotels.com can get you cheap rates from anywhere from 30-50 dollars a night. When I drove across the country I stayed for around and average of 45 dollars super8/comfort inn's/etc most came with free breakfast which was good.

$40 is about the cheapest I've seen, though expect to pay more. $70ish would be my rough estimate for an average. If you reserve online, it'll almost always be cheaper than simply checking in. That said, if you want to save some money, you can sleep in your car in designated rest areas located every 50 miles or so along the interstate. Used to be you could sleep in Wal-Mart parking lots too, but they may have changed that policy due to people leaving trash everywhere.

I would second hotels.com. I used them for a couple of years now, and they'll often email me "secret prices" and for every 10 nights you book, you get one free. As the other anon said, hostels aren't really that much cheaper than a hotel room. Airbnb is probably a better option when you're in a major city.

Pic is one I took a few steps away from an rest stop in Arizona.

use priceline bidding, it's so easy to find a decent marriott or something for sub-$60.
>betterbidding.com has good stragtegies to figure out how to know what your hotel may be if you care about that
>>
Cheap areas will be as cheap as $40, more expensive areas will have cheap ones around $80, NYC, San Fran type places, cheap will be about $120.

Depending where you're going some camping could seriously cut down on your overhead. Even the price of some comfy gear would be won back in a couple nights of camping. No need to worry about weight because you're near your car. National forest camping spots are usually 5 bucks a night or so where I live and KOAs are everywhere. They're between 15-30 a night depending on location and what plot type you pick, but they'll have nice bathrooms, showers, etc.

motel 6 can be 50-60$ if you dont stay in big towns
>>
>>1267405
You can get places for 30-40/night if youre in small towns. If you find yourself in cities, try to use Air BnB or Couch Surfer if you only need a place to sleep for the night.
>>
Basically OP stay outside the major cities and drive into them. Airbnb is a better bet for cheap stays if all you care about is a bed. America isn't the cheapest place to travel around in
>>
>>1267405
Probably in the 50$ a night range. Make sure to not go in the middle of cities, much more expensive. Also be careful with hotels/motels when you rent a room, some charge extra fees (usually a security deposit but you get that back) making it not worth it.
>>
In America, the reason that quite a few people that roadtrip sleep in the car or camp is because hotels here really are fucking expensive
>>
>>1268144
Not really, it's more that it is cheaper, faster, and easier to fly. Road tripping is fine with multiple people because you can get 2 bed hotel for <100 bucks usually.
