I was thinking about doing a 1-2 weeks holiday for this august, but I still don't know where to go.
I just saw that the flights from my city to Bulgaria are extremely cheap during that month, I really don't know that much about the country or if there's something particular to visit, but I think I can give it a try, the place looks nice, the main cities seems to have a decent nightlife and cool ruins/museums to visit, so why not.
I would be alone (in fact this would be my first experience as a solo traveller, wish me luck), any bulgarian that can help me a bit about this country, or that has recently travelled there?
>>
>>1265045
not bulgarian but have travelled a few times and will be going to bulgaria in 2 weeks. This will be my first solo travel too so im pretty nervous aha. I'm flying to Sofia but have never been there before. Apparently, the communist tour is meant to be good if you're into that sort of thing. It's probably best to stay in a hostel to meet new people. Hostel mostel has been recommended to me.
Then I'm going to the rila and the pirin mountains which are really impressive. They have good hiking treks and some nice eating places.
Sunny beach has a very good night life and is full of trashy brits aha. You could maybe find some gatherings on couchsurfing and hit the clubs. The old town of nesebar which not far from sunny beach is really nice.
Plovdiv is also a nice town in the middle of bulgaria. All these places are accessible by bus and train. Hope this helps.
>>
>>1265073

thanks a lot for your reply. I will come to Sofia from Italy, then I plan to spend here a couple of days depending on how much there's to do, from what I red on the internet I think 2 nights would be enough. Then I want to visit Plovdiv and its ruin, looks like a really cool place, other people suggested me to visit the Rila National park, I'm not really into landscapes but maybe you would like that.

After Plovdidv, I don'0t really know what to do.. I think i should visit Veliko Tarnovo (?) a small village in northern Bulgaria hidden between the mountains, they say it's really nice, and then visit Varna and the beaches to relax a bit and maybe meet some qts.

I really wanted to include Bucarest in the trip as the final city, after Varna, but it's not really near to Varna and also many people didn't give me good reviews of Bucarest.
>>
>>1265045
Look at Wikitravel and the In Your Pocket guides to Bulgarian cities. A lot of the summer tourism focuses on the trashy beach resorts where you can get drunk with Russian taxi drivers on package holidays
>>
Anon here told me their restaurants are terrible. Therefore their entire culture needs a purge.
>>
>>1265128
There's a few huts and bars up in the pirin mountains. i got 2 big trouts just fresh from the river, chips, salad and a pint for 3 euro. can't beat it.
The actual bulgarian cities can be rough around the edges with lots of communist influences and there's gypsies here and there in the countryside. but there's plenty of gems if you look in the right places.
>>
>>1265100
if you're around rila i'd recommend the rila monastery.
the hostel mostel in sofia also has a place in veliko tarnovo but i'm not sure what the town is like.
yeah i'm not sure about bucharest. id say places like transilvania would be more worth while but it would be far from bulgaria.
there's some really nice beaches between varna and burgas. though burgas itself isnt great
>>
Hijacking this thread: I'll also go to Bulgaria in few weeks, but we're going by car that we also plan to sleep in. Does anybody know what the situation is concerning wild camping or has any special advice for sights suited for this?

I will be going to Bulgaria around july as a solo traveler too!
Hostel mostel seems a pretty good place and it is quite cheap. If you stay there during the 4-7 of july let's grab a beer!

There are free walking tours that may be a good way to learn about the city. Other than that, i'm still searching for more points of interest in Sofia.

I will be there in August (just 18€ from my city, God bless low cost airlines) shame because I would have liked to share a beer with a fellow /trv/eller. Yeah everyone is recommending me this Hostel Mostel, looks like a neat place and quite cheap too. Have fun in your holiday bro!

>>1265150
I think i'll definetly check the Rila monastery and the Seven lakes, I'm not really into hiking but it looks like Bulgaria really has some gems in term of landscapes, it would be a shame to not visit them, especially since it looks like except from Sofia and Plovdiv, there's not that much to do in the cities..

I'd like to visit the Black Sea coast, Burgas looks like shit desu but Varna looks nice, I'd like to visit Sunny Beach too if I can find some time, I'm not really a party hard guy but since I'm going there in the time of the year where half the balkans will be there too, then why not take a look.

Yeah, I think I'll just leave Bucharest for my next trip, I prefer to dedicate more time to explore Bulgaria.

sorry I meant to reply you here>>1265592

Ok so this would be an idea of itinerary for a 10-15 days trip, I will probably spend a couple of nights in Sofia and Varna, and just a day in the other towns. I have the feeling I am probably dedicating too much time to it, maybe just 10 days would be enough
>>
>>1265537
Sound! I'm arriving on the morning of the 7th, would be up for a few drinks. Look out for a slim ginger/brown irish bloke in his low 20s.

yeah don't really know much about sofia. will probably spend a day on some of the tours and the cathedral then a day in the vitosha mountains.
>>
>>1265592
yeah the rila mountains and the monastery are v impressive.

yeah there's some scenes in sunny beach aha, if you got to meet up with some people its a good scene.
yeah i'd leave out bucharest. you could continue on the train through into greece beyond rila instead but that might be a bit out of the way
>>
>>1265606
yeah 10 days seems fair. i'd also recommend bansko if you like scenery. its not too far from rila . although its a winter sports place it has some good summer activites in the mountains that you can get to by cable car and good places to eat. i recommend the victoria at the top of the town and theres some huts in the mountains
>>
does anyone know whats the cheapest option in terms of trains. is it best to get a pass through bdz (bulgarian railway) or via interrail? the bdz website is pretty shit
>>
>>1265678
I will be leaving the 7th at noon to go to Veliko Tarnovo but it would be cool if we met.
I'm in my low 20s too. If you see a thin spaniard with glasses and a beard say hi!

OP here, thanks anon! I'm doing a lot of research in these days, but I still have some doubts and questions, these are the most urgent:

- do people know english over there? I love learning new languages and in this 1.5 months before my flight I'll try to learn as much bulgarian as I can, but I'm doing this more for personal interest rather than thinking it will be useful, I did the same with portuguese when I visited Brazil, and when I arrived there I still couldn't understand shit. So, do you think I'll be able to survive for a couple of weeks in bulgaria only with english, some grasps of bulgarian? I can read cyrillic pretty well, I think this helps

- what do you think about the itinerary in >>1265606 ? Am I missing something? I wanted to include Burgas in the trip, but a bulgarian on /int/ told me Varna is basically the same, but slightly better and more foreign-friendly. Also, what about Nessebar? Looks a bit like a tourist trap to me, but maybe I'm wrong.

- Should I visit Sunny Beach? I went to Ibiza once and hated it, but mostly because it was full of 18yo drunk british

- Is august a nice moment to come and visit Bulgaria? I hope it won't be too hot

Thanks a lot! I'd like to share a beer with a fellow /trv/eller if you have some spare time. I'll be there during the 2nd/3rd weeks of august.
Where do you live in Bulgaria?

>do people know english over there?
A portion of the people in the 18-30 should have some command of it. In general English isn't strange here as any decent job requires English. If you have Cyrillic you already very ahead of a lot of people. Great job! As Bulgarian language is Slavic, there is a strong overlap with Serbo-Croatian and to a lesser extent Russian.

>Varna, Burgas, Sunny beach
You will hate Sunny beach. The brits are there as well. Russkies, Brits and Germans galore. Varna is neat, Burgas is alright (and the people are right about it being a lesser version of Varna), Nessebar isn't a huge tourist trap. It's neat. Off the beaten path sea places: Chernomoretz, Sozopol, anything south of Burgas really. Map looks the quintessential Bulgaria, so I approve. I would honestly add mountain hiking google Buzludzha and Dzhendema.

Alternatives to sunny beach near varna: Golden Sands and Albena

>August
Yes. It's perfect.

I'd love to! I don't know where I will be then, but I'm based in Sofia. Cheers and keep the thread going with questions and comments. :)

I spent 3 days in Bulgaria this summer and didn't meet a single person who spoke English well enough to hold a basic conversation with me, kek.
Only been to Severozapadnala though. Guess things might be different in more developed/touristic regions.

Nice pepe btw.

>>1267015
>Is august a nice moment to come and visit Bulgaria?
Depends. Max day time temperatures often hit +30 °C. I went in June and I was quite le sweaty man.

Also, climb Mount Musala if you're not a faggot. My dad hitchhiked there during commie times and the Rila Monastery and the Seven Lakes are supposedly very impressive.

Went on bicycle trip from Vienna across Hungary, Slovakia, Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia,
I took the ferry at the port of Bechet to Oryahovo and then followed the """"Danube bike trail"""" to the Vidin-Negotin border. It's a huge meme though; there's no actualy bike trail, just normal roads of varying quality with more or less traffic. And you never actually get to see the Danube there since the actual trails is up to 10km away from the river. Still tons of mosquitoes though.

I thought Romanian towns were ugly as fuck already but Severozapadnala took it up to eleven. Kozloduy is probably the ugliest fucking city I've ever seen.
In a way the region's got some sort of commie charme. Lom, Kozloduy, Harlets, Mizia and all the other shitholes in the Northwestern corner of the country look like they were entirely build during the cold war. Even Vidin, which I suppose is kind of the cultural capital of the region is quite in disrepair. Tons of commie blocks and vacant buildings. The promenade along the Danube river was very nice though, and the city's got some cool architecture to discover like Baba Vida or the synagogue (which is also in disrepair, kek) and lots of industrial ruins.
The region kind of merits a visit on its own but it's certainly not a regular tourist destination.

Is there anything to see/do in Velinko Tarnovo or should I go straight to Sofia. Coming from Romania towards greece.

Also how's Sofia like? Any information about sights, restaurants, nightlife.. well anything would be appreciated.

Just skip Bulgaria entirely and get drunk with the lads at some Greek island resort m8.

Ruse is Vidin-tier of decent. Yeah i agree >severozapadnala< can be a let-down, but yes, that's not a tourist place.

>>1267190
Yes, Veliko Tarnovo is recommended for a day, its the medieval capital which still has a shred of dignity. Stay at Hostel Mostel, do the fortress and other memes and be on your way to Sofia.

Sofia's alright, you can exhaust it in a day if you know where you're going and you're not hugely into museums. Google "free sofia tour" and take advantage of it, they'll give you a booklet with all the bars and restaurants that are worth. Except Sputnik/Rakia Bar Raketa. Go there actually. They do a paid commie tour which isn't expensive and -decent-.

Museums: See the military museum and the one about socialist art.
Check out Borisova gradina which is top-tier for relaxation any time of the day.

Night life, check out "Cotton club" but there's a strong face control there. Good clothes+hair gel required. You'll be pleasantly surprised.
>>
>>1267038
Sunny Beach is said to have lots of strip clubs, from which you can even take a stripper back to your hotel for a price. This true?

Just bought my tickets, I'll be in BG from the 8th to the 16th of august. Unfortunately, I just realized Wizzair "free handbag" consists of a small bag with half the size of Ryanair's free handbag.. I was hoping to bring my good ol' backpack with me, I guess I will have to find something smaller. Way smaller.

another question for the bulgarian anon, will the police give me a hard time if I try to sneak into the communist monument in Buzludhza? This place looks amazing, especially from the inside

Also, why dobn't you guys restore it and convert it into a museum or something else? This place looks amazing, it could attract a lot of tourists

This is a very nice and well done website about the history and the actual state of the monument, all in english, I suggest a read to everyone who is interezsted in Bulgaria

I was there last December. I planned to go inside but didn't have the equipment (rope is required for a 4 meter drop), so delayed. Around May I read that "alarms" were installed at that place. Not sure how credible it is, but I'm not risking it. It's cool inside, but yah.

>restore, tourism

Not the first time I've thought about it/people have asked. I think it'd cost a lot and sounds like a risky investment. Once you're done with that thing there (building), there needs to be more to do.
