I have been to Iran. Tehran is aight but the culture is in Isfahan and Shiraz. My favorite place is Mashhad its really chill. Beats any european city i've been to hands down. Its a religious city though so your mileage may vary

Basically, Iran is the country of the century in terms of traveling. You should go asap.

Tehran is worth a day or two (more if you wanna get in touch with locals), but you should move on to more interesting places. Consider not only the major cities in the south but also those in the north. Mashhad ist a huge detour but you might want to give it a go.

Went there for twice for work, which was as lovely experience as far as professional travels can go. went back with my parents, trekking for two weeks, saw a bit of Tehran, Shiraz (the nasir al mulk mosque is a sight to behold), Ispahan. I booked a tour operator specialized in treks because i didn't see myself assuming the responsability of my parents in case of absolute improvisation or the occasional fuck up. Can't tell much about the nightlife as we spent most of our time outside of cities, though, but i loved the time I spent here. I highly recommend it anyway. Population is wonderful, tourism is rare. Mostly chinese it seemed to me.

In the bigger (student) cities, there's basically parties every week. With a bit of luck and the right local friends it's easy to stumble into one of them. But don't expect too much alcohol as it's REALLY expensive. Weed (and opium) are cheaper and easier to get.

Desperately want to go, but I'm British and don't want to use a guide, although it would probably be useful.

I'm Canadian so the travel ban isn't really an issue, but I'd likely be traveling with someone who has dual Canadian-Egyptian citizenship. As long as he doesn't use his Egyptian passport will he be okay?

Going to Iran next year. Also, the only ISIS attack so far has been in Tehran, so take that as you will. As everyone also already said, you really should see at least Isfehan and Shiraz region. Pic related is my current list of possible stuff to visit.

But really, don't limit yourself to Tehran, there's so much more.
