I was in Thailand during no fewer than two coups d'etat, but other than the television getting very strange for a few days, and a sudden very noticeable armed presence on the streets, it doesn't actually change things that much for most visitors if you keep your head down and stay away from the front lines/any violent or potentially violent street protests. I passed through several red vs yellow demonstrations but kept my distance.

I was also in Nepal During a period when they were without a government or Constitution, although that's really been most of the last 10 years. There were several large scale strikes that I was instructed very specifically to avoid.

I was staying in a hostel about three minutes from Taksim Square when the 2013 Gezi Park Protests broke out in Istanbul.

The owner of the hostel had told me a German fellow to wander on down to the park. He said some 'hippies' were having an environmental sit-in and thought it might be a fresh opportunity to 'meet some loose Turkish leftists.'

We headed down and wound up getting caught in the very beginnings of the riot. My friend and I were separated from another; he found his way back to the hostel, while I got pelted in the back with a rubber bullet and ran into a building.

Unfortunately, the building I chose was also the local headquarters of the SDP (Socialist Democracy Party). Got stuck talking to gommies and looking at pictures of Lenin while the police tried to break the door down.

I've also seen some intense police brutality in India as well as a police raid on a party-boat in Belgrade following an execution-style Mafia killing (can't remember which boat, but it was the one which has a reputation for gold-diggers).

Pic related is from the Gezi Park protests. The police were trying to come back up to Taksim from some road leading to Bestiktas Stadium but more or less got wrecked. I think the same night some football fans hijacked a bulldozer and used it to push over police barricades near the Bosporus Bridge.

I was on a plane in Alexandria when the Arab Spring happened. They shut off all lights in the plane, which one guy was trying to scare me about by telling me it was the one model that didn't have a proper tracking system in case it got blown to bits, though I feel like he was pulling my leg. We stayed on the ground for about two hours, got the okay to fly, and returned to Dubai.

It was surreal seeing news reports later of there having been riots and government funded gangs on motorcycles wielding 'samurai swords' (direct quote) attacking protestors.

A part of me wishes I were present, but I probably would have gotten mowed down.

I was in Israel and went to West Bank when tensions were higher than usual. Just after crossing, I saw some Palestinian teenagers throwing rocks at Israeli soldiers at the border and roll a flaming tire at them, while the soldiers shot tear gas at them and bullets in the air. No idea if that was because heightened tensions or if that was an everyday occurrence.

Similar to this but I was living in Kadikoy at the time and for a year after it when there was still sporadic protests.

I ended up in the middle of protests and got tear gassed a couple of times on the way back from work. My flat was pretty much in the middle of the protests and I saw countless people beaten up by the police and tear gas and rubber bullets being fired indiscriminately down streets and at people not even involved in protests. I even knew a couple of foreigners who had the misfortune of being outside when protests started up and they ended up being deported on false charges. Shit was pretty crazy.

Scary seas really affect me. I have been in some squalls just off the coast of Miami and the bahamas both, that were exactly like in the movie A Perfect Storm within about not even 15 minutes of warning, and always on the worst sailing day, I think of that poor crew onboard that historic windjammer Fantome during Hurricane Mitch. Newer ships do have some benefit in safety.
