Is there anything to do in Iceland besides nature stuff?

I don't have a problem with that if not because I love the outdoors, I'm just curious about what the locals do--I can't imagine the locals go out to stare at glaciers every weekend, majestic as they may be.
>>
>>1255208
Reykjavik is pretty cool, you should spend a few days there
>>
>>1255365
And do what?
Do they have a viking museum or something?

Any good bars/clubs venues or resturants ? I'm almost afraid to ask this question because I know how expensive alcohol is there.
>>
>>1255208
>What the locals do
I'm gonna guess they go to local bars, watch Netflix at home, spend way too much time on Instagram, and occasionally post on the 4chinz. Just like most other places these days.
>>
>>1255208
OP, there's only 2 days & nights of museum/shopping/dining fun to be had in Reykjavik. Locals do a lot of home partying since alcohol is so highly priced. They might cruise down Laugaveger, or attend a music festival, or go to the opera. Taking a hot pot or swim each day is one time killer that is also good for your health.

Summer is short and you go to your summer house for a country weekend. My favorite museum is the Settlement museum in Bogarnes. My second favorite is more like a research center, but there are priceless manuscripts and some history there, Snorristofa. Going to Iceland without a rental car seems to neither save money on tours instead nor show you the real iceland. If you plan just a city visit and spa day on the way to europe, you'll still enjoy it your jetlag cure, but you'll miss alot. You ideally need 5-10 days in a car, really.

The Grapevine is the events newspaper for expats and locals alike. You'll find whatever you need there or online for food or entertainment, especially cute finds like the record store.
https://grapevine.is/

I suggest Islenski Barinn for taste sized morsels of the "traditional" diet and foods all at once without breaking the bank. But you might explore this list:

Has anyone here ever used one of IcelandAir's stopover flight deals?

If so where did you go? I want to spend as much time in Iceland as possible but not sure if I would get more days there flying to Madrid or Paris.
>>
>>1255734
Nice post. Can the golden road really be done in a single day? It seems like a lot to try to cram in. Also, where is the best place to eat whale?
>>
>>1257242
>in a single day?
What stops would you make along the Golden Circle if you were to do it in only one day? That sounds terribly rushed.

I've never rented a car abroad, or at home. How much would that cost me? Is there a Hertz in Reykjavik?
>>
>>1257352
The Golden Circle is done in a single day by almost all tour companies that leave from/near Reykjavik. There's no reason you couldn't do it yourself in the same time frame, especially in summer with the longer days. It includes Gullfoss, Geysir, and Thingvellir National Park, and some include Kerid crater lake in this as well.

The Ring Road, on the other hand, needs at least 7 days (if not more) to do without being rushed, since this goes around the whole island.

You may not have been confusing the two, but I know many people that do, so I figured it was worth clarifying this.

Where are you from OP?

Not sure if the Ring Road is worth a whole week, I may try to combine bits from the Golden Circle and Ring Road to make a Golden Ring.

Unless the Ring Road is really worth another 6 days, everyone says the Blue Lagoon sucks and is just power plant run off.

Pretty much this.

Reykjavik has a sort of charm, but it quickly wears off. There isn't much to do there.

Iceland is best experienced through its nature rather than its rare pockets of urban life.

>>1257242

The Golden Circle can easily be done in a single day.

I hitchhiked my way through Iceland, and it didn't take me long to do the Golden Circle at all. I think I arrived there in the morning from Reykjavik and was camping out near the beach in Vik the same night.

Is late August still summer? I was planning to do the golden circle (just the main attractions Gullfoss, Geysir, Thingvellir, and Kerid) one day, and then go down to Vik another day, and spend my other day and a half in Reykjavik eating food and looking at penises.
>>
>>1257648
>everyone says the Blue Lagoon sucks
Only poor people say that. People who like spas, travel the world hitting up the ancient baths and mineral springs, and anyone who has done travel that includes anything interesting to do and not just drinking and hostels, rate at as a top spa experience of their lives.
>and is just power plant run off
Yup, and that's how it started, correct, but it's not toxic waste or anything like that. Power plants in iceland are green marvels that are so productive, they sell it to europe and give locals a type of free bill instead. They harness the roaring hot volcanically heated underground mineral water harnessed for energy, and then it's sent back out to be absorbed by the land, but it doesn't absorb so quickly, but rather became a bit of a slowly draining lake in the lava field. Locals enjoyed it like they enjoyed all kinds of middle of nowhere natural pools too. The mineral content seems healing for people with skin afflictions like eczema, and the word got out (yea yea, every spa in the world claims that). But, as business grew, the facility expanded, and it has lovely locker rooms with wristband locks, spacious scandi design with wood and glass everywhere, a lovely swim up wet bar for cocktails and mud masks, and you'll find yourself with enough space to get away from all peoples, though the international mix of languages is interesting. While you immerse and squat or float, you can get a massage on a mat, while protected from the wind with a tarp, can swim under waterfalls or walk against currents, or enjoy the lava field around you (you can't really see the power plant anymore as they built up the rocks like a visual wall on one side. They added a rooftop observatory, and a nice before-the-airport kind of hotel or for treatment people. It is totally unique in the world, and priced like other spas really.

I'm not the OP but I am an American that is going to be staying in Reykjavik for a few days. I'm not renting a car so I'm kind of stuck in the town and with tours. I'd go to the Blue Lagoon but I'm too shy to shower in front of people.

You can easily hitchhike all the way to Vik within a single day. No need just to stay in Reykjavik - it's a miserable and depressing place not worth more than a fraction of a week.

>I'd go to the Blue Lagoon but I'm too shy to shower in front of people.
I'd do it anyway. You'll be fine. This pic of a sign wasn't seen once by me at any spa. They want clean people in the steam rooms and pools, that's all. Just on your way out of the locker room to the pools, uhh wet your hair and your suit, or wash your face, then keep on walking. Bring a small conditioner for the mineral water effect on hair. Bring crocs or flipflops.

At BL, get face mask, cocktail and generous terry robe package with your admission. From home, bring nonslip waterproof crocs or flipflops for wee slippery floors and yea, people walk there with their bare feet but you're smarter than that. There's a ramp going down into the water, and people kick off the shoes there and hang up the robes/towels. Proceed to locker room with robe and wristband. Pick a remote locker. The lockers that are segmented into several different locker room area groupings with a center bench, ensuring you're always in one without others around you while you change and everyone faces their lockers due to the square nature of the bench and groupings. For an upcharge, there are private suites for resting/showering/changing for an upcharge of $50 if you're that worried, with a luxury kind of of lounge attached OR you can get a rooms at the silica hotel which includes your admission to the blue lagoon, a nice option pre or post flight before getting into to the city.

I was a little bit worried there was a monitor with a big stick hitting people who weren't showering, rofl, all made up. First, remove street shoes at locker put on flipflops, put away wallet, etc. Go to bathroom stall to do your business, then change into suit and robe in stall, walk back to locker, put away clothes now. Walk back to closed shower stalls, hang trunks/towel, get wet/clean/comb hair. Dry with towel. Put on robe over dry suit. Go back to locker and put away damp towel and be carefee as you then walk outside.

Was in Iceland for a week. Rented a shitty Fiat Panda upfront online, returned it and got a SUV because of the roads (it's super expensive to rent cars there, just a heads up).

Reykjavik has some tours leaving from the harbor to go whale watching, there is some sort of fantasy tour that talks about all the tales and legends going around in Iceland.

The main street has plenty of coffee places and clubs, most locals seem to be drunk in the evening when going there.

Blue Lagoon is a must, just for face covered in mud standing in blue water selfies.

Wanted to see pretty Icelandic girls, Smaralind mall (if I spelled that correctly) had a few.But overall not really worth going unless you are really shopping or want to go see a movie.

Best memories are related to activities outside of Reykjavik really.

Penis museum is usually filled with lots of women...and uncomfortable looking blokes. I was one of the later.

Depending on what you want to do and when you want to go. Iceland is great in winter and would recommend going then - it feels more Icelandic that way too. If in winter, head to þingveller and look at the mid-atlantic ridge (litterally the break in continents between Europe and North America). Head around the Golden Circle but the best falls are in other places - like in the NW. Rent a car and check out the black sandy beaches in the south. If winter, and the sun has been active, you'll get great Aurora too. Head inland and find somewhere dark. Go to the Blue Lagoon but it's pretty touristy. Also check out the museums in town including the National Museum (to learn some history, and to join the masses at being pissed off with the Danes) and also one in town which has a dipictions of Reykjavik as a typical Viking village (871±2).

Overall though, it's great there. Get a hotdog from Bæjarins like a tourist (hopefully whilst it's raining) and enjoy the ice. A good bar would be Íslenski barinn especially if you feel like a good burger, great beer and overall good atmosphere. Nice and warm in there too after hours of walking around by the sea front.

Try to get out and see the glaciers, look at Hekla from a distance, take a good camera and play with some horses.

Try not to get stuck in a lava field like we did. Also, buy some 66° North gear (pretty good) and an Alfoss blanket. You'll not be disappointed.
>>
I'm going to Iceland next month. I just reached the "inspiration" stage and I'm willing to get information of basically the history of the place. What sagas are the most interesting to get information about. I think the further back in time the better.

The ones I've seen don't seem attractive at all. Even the escorts I was shocked to think that they expected anyone to pay for that. Iceland also has one of the wold's highest rates for Chlamydia and other STDs, not the ones that will kill you, but something worth thinking about if you're planning to munch icepuss.

Does anyone recommend the Reykjavík City Card for a 3-4 day stay?
>>
>>1256072
yes, I did, summer 2013

I'm not sure what you're asking. I did the normal predictable touristy Blue Lagoon, and hung out with a local bro, and the dad of this chick I'd been banging in Florida -- both in Reykjanesbaer. Also went to the Viking Museum there.

Wanted to do more on my way back, but got pneumonia and had to come straight home, never left the terminal. Some weird, and stupid, motherfucker was trying to preach Jesus to me in Amsterdam then offered me colloidal silver in Iceland.
>>
>>1263811
Hey that was me.
What I am asking, or meant to ask, is what city did you travel to? And it seems you've answered [Amsterdam].

But also, to some degree the number of days you are permitted to spend in Iceland before boarding a flight to another European city seems to vary with your choice of final destination; I've seen everything from 1 to 16 available just trying out different end destinations.
>>
I went there in February and spent most of my time in the capital, so I can easily say there's tons of stuff to do in Reykjavik. The art museum is spread across 3 sites but one ticket will get you into all 3. Not to mention all the other weird little galleries spread around town. There's a few normal museums, but the only one I really enjoyed was the museum of photography in the library. The grapevine has some apps that can help you find cultural stuff if you're interested.
The food is a highlight too. Don't bother with "delicacies" like whale, puffin, or even the hotdogs, just go to the places people actually enjoy. I recommend Hverfisgata 12, Kopar, Reykjavik roaster and a little bakery in town called Braud.
The city is lovely just to walk around too. Lots of sculptures, buildings, and nature to enjoy.

Also if you're going in the summer, you can skip the crowds at the golden circle by going at night since the sun is up all the time anyway. And I'd go to "the secret lagoon" rather than the blue lagoon, since the former is cheaper, less crowded, and actually natural.
>>
>>1263820
Excellent advice anon but I'll have to ignore the delicacies recommendation though, it's my mission in life to consume as many different animals as possible.
