Is traveling in Mexico safe? I'm white as fuck and don't know Spanish.
>>
>the most traveled destination by white people
>asking if English-speaking white people are safe there
Really nigga?

In all seriousness, I have heard that it's only safe in the tourist areas. If you're one of those RealTraveler™ types, then you might have a hard time exploring outside of resorts and marketplaces.
>>
>>1255081

Just spent the last two weeks travelling around the Yucatan peninsula and I never felt unsafe at any point, even wondering around Merida alone at night after a shed load of mezcal.

I'm white with barely any any Spanish too, btw
>>
>>1255081
just like anywhere it depends on the area, but if you stay in relatively safe cities / parts of town you should be fine
>>
>>1255081
buy yourself an escort for the time you're there

>hot girl everywhere
>local

win-win
>>
>>1255091
They're too pricey. Many prices match those in the US now without adjusted 4 local living cost so I can't.

If I knew the location of some place where locals go However I would.
>>
>>1255081
Spent the night with a girl that looked just like that in Buzios, brazil. Her mom encouraged us, which was kind of weird.
>>
>>1255093
You have the dollars and bargaining power. Play hardball.
>>
If you stay either in central big cities (Mexico City, Monterrey, etc.) or in touristy beaches, you'll be fine
The whole yucatan peninsula is very safe, as well as most of the southern beaches.

If you go to the northern states, the "inbetween" areas, or basically anywhere else that's not crowded with white tourists or expats, you do run a very, very big risk.

Mexico's day-to-day affairs are not controlled by law, like the USA is. Mexico in this way is controlled by money and power. And "power" in Mexico means "he who has the biggest, baddest guns"
>>
I travelled for two months all over the southern Mexican states, put 11000 km on the rental car, never had any problems and went to isolated areas, beaches, jungles by myself. Some of the bars I went to were kinda sketchy but still had no problems. Got stared at all the time. sotra like being the only black guy at a klan meeting. I'm white tho and only half speak the lingo.
>>
Spent the whole winter camping on beaches all over baja.
In 3000 miles of driving i had not one problem
>>
>>1255095
>Her mom encouraged us, which was kind of weird.
Money makes people do weird things.
>>
>>1255098
>You have the dollars and bargaining power. Play hardball.
Doesn't work that way. They won't even come to your hotel unless you offer something on par with what everyone else is giving up

Where did you hear this bullshit? I'm from Mexico and obviously I don't have to carry a gun in order to live my life.
OP, just avoid poor neighborhoods at night and use Uber so the taxi don't trie to rip you off.
>>
>>1255086
Merida is easily the safest city in Mexico, Yucatan is also somewhat chill, it's a good destination.
>>
>>1255333
Look at 2016-2017 data, and it isn't anymore, drug trading routes are changing since the last couple of years have seen a number of really big detentions, and pre-existing deals are renewed through extreme violence. The fall of the Sinaloa Cartel, the Zetas and the "Templar Knights", plus the raise of Jalisco New Generation cartel has shifted violence a lot. And places that used to be safe-heavens aren't safe at all anymore.

The fact that neither of you noticed just goes to show that you will never see those disputes unless you involve yourself directly in the fighting.

I lived in Mexico for 4 years. Yes it is safe. Just don't step on anyone's toes. If you want danger, come visit Honduras.
>>
It's perfectly fine. Guys even ride bicycles all through the country and don't get into any trouble. Biggest risk is pickpockets. And don't take taxis outside of Oaxaca, take uber.

>>1255093
>>1255091

This is only true in gringo resort areas. Even in non-gringo resort areas (Mazatlan) they're <$40. Though you can fuck them much with much less hassle and cheaper at the "strip clubs" and "casas de citas".

I got a cute 18 y/o college girl for $25 in Oaxaca and went to "casas" all the time for $20. Needed spanish though.
>>

>The fact that neither of you noticed just goes to show that you will never see those disputes unless you involve yourself directly in the fighting.
This is true, violence in Mexico is not nearly as bad as the media makes it seem, on the other hand poverty is way worse than you think, I think we get compared to somalia or something like that, there is that much misery.

As it's been adviced before just avoid poor neighboors, people over there is really desperate and will try to rob you if you look like you have money.
>>
>>1255579
Wrong.
It's worse than depicted on the media.
Mexico is not safe, ignore the real travelers and resortfags who claim otherwise.
>>
>>1255081
please take your lewd photos elsewhere
>>
>>1256019
At least the Yucatan seemed pretty safe.
Except microbiologically.

And I think Merida is somewhere between "resort" and "real traveler".
>>
>>1255081
just did for three months. totally safe. stay away from the border. the only people that tried to swindle me were white and from the US. go figure.
Have a great time. You'll pick up some spanish as you go. Airbnb is cheaper than hostels and way nicer.
San Cristobal is a really cool spot. Have fun

>It's worse than depicted on the media

Oh really? It is depicted as the second deadliest country in the world by the American media under several bullshit circumstances:

https://www.bloomberg.com/politics/articles/2017-05-09/mexico-now-world-s-deadliest-conflict-zone-after-syria-survey?cmpid=socialflow-facebook-business&utm_content=business&utm_campaign=socialflow-organic&utm_source=facebook&utm_medium=social

1) Mexico is currently at war (a real literal war with military personnel deployed on the streets fighting with military weapons against paramilitary organizations, some of which received military training by the American and Israeli special forces units, in a guerrilla type conflict, not the meme definition of a war Americans use i.e. 'war on drugs') against Drug Cartels, the most profitable organization in the entire planet
2) Deaths derived from that conflict are counted in the murder rate, which doesn't happen for any other conflict on the planet (Syria, Iraq, African Wars, Crimea, etc)
3) At the same time it is counted in the murder rate, it is also counted in the conflict causality rate, which doesn't happen for countries like Venezuela, El Salvador, Honduras, Colombia, Brazil, etc
4) For the reasons above, Mexico is the only country to appear in both lists
5) The report of the "second deadliest conflict zone" not only excludes most countries in the planet and includes Mexico for arbitrary reasons, it also uses the total number of deaths as a measure instead of using rate. With a rate of 19 in Mexico (very high) vs 50 in Afghanistan, Afghanistan and Iraq are clearly more dangerous to be in; but since Mexico has four times their population and more deaths in total numbers as a result, it is ranked conveniently higher. And since Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, etc, are not even included (all of which have much higher murder rates), Mexico also gets reported as being more dangerous as them

So, really, how can it be worse than what gets reported?
>>
>>1256195
And dot get me wrong, Mexico is a very dangerous country and violence has sadly been increasing for the past 2 years with no signs of getting better. But it is far from being worse than what the media says, and you will only see the conflicts if you either involve yourself directly in them or do something stupid (you are a soldier, a drug dealer, live in the shittiest parts of the main trafficking routes, want to buy drugs, or are incredibly unlucky).
>>
>>1256196
>something stupid
>you are a soldier
I don't understand the relevance here mil people in California head down to TJ all the time.
>>
>>1255127
Is the interior of Oaxaca safe?
>>
>>1256823
Not beyond Oaxaca city

Oaxaca is one of the worst states in general crime. Little narco influence, but a lot of regular crime. Murders, kidnapping, robberies, etc
>>
If you had to pick between the coast of Oaxaca or San Cristobal de las casas, which would you pick?
>>
>>1256827
Ah ok, thanks for that. I had assumed that Oaxaca was very similar to the Yucatan in that regard.
>>
>>1256830

And it's full of beautiful beaches with world-class surf

I'm thinking of going for a month, how does this route look? Pic related.
>>
>>1255081
Yes is safe, quite actually. Just dont try to be the "im american im better than you" and you will be fine. Stay on route with the tour if you are thinking in one, almost all people are nice to tourist, no matter where they come from, also there are many people that talk english and will help you.

Dont believe shit other people tell you, I live here in Mexico, I been to many places in this country, its true that we are at war, but its actually on the north of the country, and also the cartels and whatever bad guy you imagine are not everywhere, only in far towns and other ugly places of some cities, but all evade the tourist parts, as they know many people live from that, so they got money for actually not messing with any tourist, soooo its pretty safe as long as you spend your dollars here and dont try to be funny with the wrong people.
>>
>>1255081
I just spent a month there, knew very little Spanish.
My experience was good.
Stay away from Michoacán, the cartels are really bad down there.
Got ran out of town by some narco because his gf lied and said she was single.
Dude gave me 2 hours to get out of town or else.
Can't ever go back there again.
Guadalajara was great.
Lots of people spoke English, and it was a great city.
I'd recommend the Blue Pepper hostel there.
>>
>>1257828
looks pretty good but you might want to take in more coastline south of Campeche city. Campeche city itself I would avoid... I mean its got some nice walls and forts but it is probably the most expensive place around now. it and Cancun/PDC

Acapulco is where poor people from mexico city and central mexico go to the beach

>Acapulco is where poor people from mexico city and central mexico go to the beach

>>
>>1260048
Don't avoid it like the plague, but just don't go

There's so much more amazing beaches throughout Mexico, all of them more beautiful than Acapulco and most of them at similar prices for everything or even cheaper. Obviously not Cabo though...

Literally any beach in Mexico is better than Acapulco. Why would you force yourself to go to the worst one?
>>
>>1260052
>at similar prices for everything or even cheaper. Obviously not Cabo though...

>Why would you force yourself to go to the worst one?

I assumed if poor Mexicans go there it must be a good deal, maybe they knew where to find a good bargain. Where would you recommend?
>>
>>1260064
Nah, they go there because it's by far the shortest drive from central mexico. And because most other beaches are really only accesible by plane, other than driving through some gnarly mountain range for 8+ hours

Travelling by plane to Acapulco is laughable at best.

Every coastal Mexican state has beaches that singlehandendly surpass the beauty of all American beaches combined. Perhaps minus florida (and hawaii obviously). All it takes is a google search.

My favorite is Puerto Escondido and neighboring beaches in Oaxaca. But those are definitely not your party-resort type beaches. Yucatan peninsula is unbeatable for this type of beach. (and no, Cancun is not the only beach in the entire peninsula, like most think)
