Not really relevant but expect it to be CRAMPED is my guess. I've never been but I would at least experience it once, especially if I had free nice accommodation.

Manila has it's charms but really it's just a big smelly shithole, don't let that taint your view of the Philippines though, get out of the city and go literally anywhere else. Everyone speaks English too.

It's worth visiting for sure, but only as a single male. One of the easiest places to get laid in the world.

You don't need tagalog, everyone you'll come in contact with speaks some english, and all signs are in english everywhere.

When I was in Manila I met a girl and she showed me around... to the malls. There was absolutely nothing to see except fucking malls. Everyone hung out at the malls, went to restaurants and cafes at the malls.

No one would care, every white guy that lives there is dating a filipino.

IMO: You have to get out of Manila and go to Palawan or Cebu.

1. Manila is a mess, but i guess you can go hang out in MOA or go to the casino or something depending on your tastes and where you'll stay. The city is full of the corrupt elites and poor people with no where to go and nothing to do.

2. Traffic is a disaster and be prepared for taxis to try and rip you off as everything is negotiated price. If you walk off the airport property you'll can grab one for half the price. Sometimes it's worth it to talk to the driver about taking the express and paying the toll for him. Jeepneys are tough to figure out but worth it especially if your girl can help you navigate through the city. The train is a fucking write off. I got squished in so tight i couldn't even put my arms down and could have easily been robbed but fortunately wasn't.

3. Luneta park is nice, they have music and fountains and you can just hang out there into the evening. It's fun watching the poverty kids running around begging for money. I saw a woman slap a kid last time i was there. Also the churches are interesting if you like architecture.

I spent a day in Cebu and it was the worst place i visited in the country. Best to grab a ferry to bohol from there if you have the time. Everywhere i went on that island was nice and there was less organized begging gangs and mudslimes trying to sell trinkets.
Also El Nido was overrated and full of drunk college kids fucking eachother, while puerto princessa had a few bars with old white dudes and 14 year old hookers. There's a nice vietnamese restaurant down the street from the airport though. The young couple that owns it were friendly and the food was clean.

The china town is alright to check out pretty decent food but as the others have said dirty, cramped, terrible traffic and not much to do besides the malls, the old town and the previously mentioned china town

Everything this guy says is 100% true. Don't be afraid to tell kids or beggars to fuck off, and push them or drunks if they initiate physical contact. Most pinoys will apologize if a drunk or beggar physically harasses you and help escort you away from them. Most locals will understand some basic English if they are under 40, but many are incapable of communicating in English. Learn a few phrases in Tagalog/Cebuano and you can go pretty much anywhere.

I'd recommend you avoid the really big cities such as Manila, QC, or Cebu, and try to either get to resort areas such as Palawan or more country areas such as Bohol. The best mangos come from Guimaras, and you can find them on Panay or Negros in the markets in the morning, but mango season is already ending and will be over when you get there. Be sure to eat as much jackfruit and pineapple as you can.

Good attractions are waterfalls/mountains and churches, there's not much else to see there. In and near Manila, there's a few interesting statues of the first Europeans to show up there, but they aren't very impressive, no one visits them, and if you don't care about history it isn't worth the effort.

Balut tastes awful, but it isn't as bad as fresh pig blood. Get your shots before you go, and take the pill that kills all the parasites when you get back, even if your stool and urine is clean.

It isn't worth going if you are going to be staying in Manila the entire time. White people get attention but it isn't too bad, even in the super remote areas (and you're not 60 so people won't be secretly annoyed). Just stay away from the rebels (some mountain areas) and the terrorists (Mindanao) and bad parts of the city at night (Manila) and you'll be fine. Go to the churches at least once for the architecture if you do go, plus many of the priests are very nice.

manila is not really worth visiting, only passing trough.
unless you want to see tondo or the smoky mountains.

most of the basics have been covered in this thread. The Philippines is a wonderful country, but Manila is kind of a shit hole. Tagaytay is nearby and great. Going down the peninsula to the west is also great: Quezon nat'l park and Bantakay. Only problem is traveling in the country is a pain in the ass.

I'd just echo the general sentiments. Manila is crowded, boring, the beggars are aggressive, etc. Beautiful churches to see but besides that meh. I had a much better time in Cebu. I'm assuming you're American--I wouldn't drop several hundred bucks on plane ticket to haul ass across the pacific just to visit the Philippines.
