Most Africans have running water
Most Africans have reliable electricity
The West only recently surpassed Africa in terms of mobile phones per capita.
There are 54 countries in Africa and not one of them conforms to the ideas in your head. Your ideas belong to the 1980s
>>
>>1257658

more like early 2000s. theyve seen most progress in the past 15 years mostly
>>
>>1257658
Good luck convincing people here, it's 4chan after all.

The use of the term "africans" followed by a generality is a sufficient proof of ignorance. Africa is insanely big and diversified.
>>
>>1259022
>Yes. Because 99.99% are legacy low-cost non-smartphones dumped there by the west.
Having been there, I can say that in big cities, smartphones (often Chinese) are common to very common, and it's nothing special to own several for cheap access to other networks. Outside cities, regular mobile phones are more prevalent, but I'd be downright amazed if these were mostly imported from the West. Most likely dumped by other Africans.

>Africa (political state) and Africans (as hosts) are shit.
Agreed on African countries often leaving much to be desired on state level, but Africans themselves are the best hosts I've come across. Travelled through entire countries without paying for accomodation, for example.
>>
I really think we should really just ignore /pol/tards appearing in other boards who aren't /pol/. They just dumb down any discussion previously held in any thread.
>>
>>1257658
>Running water
>Drinkable water

yeah no, you can drink from the taps if you want though anon, nobody will stop you.

>Reliable electricity
Isn't it common place in africa for countries to sell power to each other and therefore leaving parts of their country in black outs ? Do we have the same definition of reliable ?

>The west only recently surpassed Africa in terms of mobile phones per capita

It's almost like when a country and it's technology is so far behind they can make some sort of technological leap into the modern day. Someone should make some sort of scientific theory about this.

Of the 54 countries in Africa, you have not been to all, you have not seen everything in those 54 countries. The Africa you see on tv is still and by far, the current state of Africa. You are not fooling anybody by cherrypicking statistics like the mobile phones, or cleverly wording your statements, like the running water thing. Africa is and will be a shit hole for a very long time. All the infrastructure that is being put in place is by Chinese loans that these countries can never pay back, so you can imagine how many natural resources China will have claim to in a few years, further setting back the African countries.
>>
>>1256702
there is are a lot of public networks around funded by the UN or charity organizations or by bill gates or whatever

those governments also ban a lot on those networks;.. like sites that contain gore and porno (thus also 4chan)

Great post! How many countries in Africa have you seen? Surely you must have made your way around a great deal of the continent to speak like this, no?
>>
Having recently come back from serving under MINUSMA in Mali I can confirm that there is one western motorcyclist who is currently held hostage. Can't remember exactly where it is though, since it was far outside our area of operations.

Even as a solo traveler and motorcyclist myself, I always wonder about why some people insist on traveling to countries currently in a state of war. If that is what attracts you, you should either get a job for an NGO or go as a soldier, in which case you would quickly realize why you shouldn't travel there alone and unarmed.

For example, I would love to travel Mali more freely myself, but would not do it right now unless I could afford a few competent armed bodyguards, even in the Bamako area.

Some people are weird.
>>
>>1260356
Was it in Mali and do you know more details?

Not because I want to know if it's the French guy, I'm just interested.

Also, feel free to share experiences/photos from your time in Mali, it's always a pleasure reading about less common destinations

/n/ was a nice place once but it became the testing ground for political and racial divide that /pol/ is now and moot deleted it. Let up faggot africa is not an easy place to live in yet do not spread disinformation.
>water
Northern Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa even though in one continent, have made different levels of progress towards the Millennium Development Goal on water. North Africa has 92% coverage and is on track to meet its 94% target before 2015. However, Sub-Saharan Africa experiences a contrasting case with 40% of the 783 million people without access to an improved source of drinking water from the region. Sub-Saharan Africa is off track from meeting the MDG on water with just 61% water coverage and with the current pace cannot reach the 75% target set for the region."

http://www.un.org/waterforlifedecade/africa.shtml

>electricity

An estimated 1.2 billion people – 16% of the global population – did not have access to electricity according to WEO-2016, 15 million fewer than reported in the previous year. Many more suffer from supply that is of poor quality. More than 95% of those living without electricity are in countries in sub-Saharan Africa and developing Asia, and they are predominantly in rural areas (around 80% of the world total). While still far from complete, progress in providing electrification in urban areas has outpaced that in rural areas two to one since 2000.

Landline Penetration Near Zero

While mobile networks in sub-Saharan Africa have spread rapidly, landline penetration in the seven countries surveyed is close to zero. A median of only 2% across these nations say they have a working landline telephone in their house, with a median of 97% saying they do not have one. There is little variation across the countries on landline ownership. Landlines are simply rare on the continent.
http://www.pewglobal.org/2015/04/15/cell-phones-in-africa-communication-lifeline/

The point is that africa is not a modernized continent in general, particularly sub-saharan africa, which is also the subject of this thread.

I think you mean /news/? Or maybe /int/?

/n/ is Transport and is really trains and bikes with a few boat, bus and plane threads from time to time. Some urban planning too.
>>
>>1263485
He's talking about old /n/, that one was axed in 2007 or 8. Then moot made /new/ since nobody had told him the definition of insanity and he axed it again for the same reason. Then he made /pol/ and just left it to fester this time around.
>>
>>1263493
I didn't realise that /n/ wasn't from the beginning. The lore of the board says it was built as a containment board for trainspotters and suggests that it was from the very beginning.

/n/ was a lot of boards. It was trains at first for a short while, then it was animals, then it was news, then back to transportation again.

i want to go backpacking somewhere in Africa but I dont really know where and what I would do?

I thought about Mozambique but there are only 3 hostels on hostelworld. Let's say I arrive at Airport and than what? I dont mind harsh enviroment but I dunno where to start

Umm yeah I helped set up some of the first cellular base systems in Africa back in the day (yay for MOTCID!), they don't have landlines or running water there. >>
>>1281663
Africa is not really a place to meet new people for the most part.

I would recommend a group tour or something similair. If you are hoping to find a european-hostel style thing in africa, you are out of luck for the most part, unless you go to morocco or parts of zuid afrika.

Africa is next level, a very rewarding place to visit but not in the same was as europe or australia.

Maybe look into "shoestring" travel, they ate not that expensive and you get a small group of like minded people. I used them to visit ethiopia, and i could not have done it without them. You will feel alone without likeminded people.
>>
>>1281675
this shoestring thing looks interesting

>>
>>1281690
For me the flights were included, bur i went with the dutch company. I don't know if the same goes for your local company, but i would say 99% yes.

I went to ethiopia last year for two weeks and it only cost me 899 euros. And my flight was included. I will never forget the experience, a mix of medival castles, nature, orthodox churches and the vibrant colours in the markets.

Google around abit, i am sure there are other cheap tours, i don't want to shill shoestring too hard.

The war in the CAR is really heating up, Aid workers and westerners are now being targeted because the Anti-Balaka think that the French peacekeepers and Aid workers are supporting the Muslims. Only the other day red cross volunteers were killed by Machete in the central provinces & all remaining western workers on the gold mines were pulled out 3 months ago.

The only way you would be able to make it into Bangui would be by barge up the river, from there I doubt you could make it very far outside without escorts.

Would be nice to know where OP is though, I thought he had ran out of time and had flown back to France to continue the journey at a later date?

He's been in Bangui for a while - at least a month, probably longer. His plan was to join a convoy heading for Bangui at the Cameroon - CAR border. Plenty of those for safety reasons, and it looks like he did just that. His current plan is to
>wait for parts to arrive from France by air
>cut straight into the DRC given that Bangui is right at the border, and the easter CAR route is a warzone.

Pic is him with a book describing the previous rebellion, you may recognize the watch.
