Didn't go to the South island so I can't say about that (for what it's worth everyone we spoke to from NZ said the south was better than the North), but there's a ton of nice trails right around the lakes near Rotorua.

I assume you'd fly into Auckland from Australia so it's only ~2 hour drive IIRC from Auckland to Rotorua.

I did a little research after posting and im thinking Queenstown. Seems like a perfect mix of outdoors stuff and nightlife.

Getting around NZ is super easy. There's buses that go everywhere.

kiwi here. pretty much either auckland or wellington is what you're after. not really a decent nightlife anywhere else. definitely recommend doing the tongariro crossing if you get a chance and the weather isnt shit. everythings really accessible, you can get a $20 bus from auckland down to wellington most days
