Where will the average backpacker go after Southeast Asia -- especially Thailand -- becomes worn out?
>>
Myanmar still has a ways to go before becoming overly commercialized. SEA is not done yet.
>>
>>1227465
But where will backpackers next?
>>
>>1227466
Probably Europe, which they flock to anyways
>>
>>1227464
Mongolia
>>
>>1227464
What do you mean OP ? Do you mean what happens when SEA becomes more expensive and backpackers need a new cheap hotspot ?

Or do you mean after backpacking SEA where would backpackers go next?
>>
Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Bali are baby's first backpacking

But there's still Philippines, Myanmar, Borneo, Malaysia etc if you want something less touristy in SEA

South America is the next level up after SEA. The middle east is after. Non-northern Africa is the final frontier

Thailand is completely played out and commercialised. It's fun but let's not pretend
>>
It has to have sun, nice beaches and plenty of bars.
The 'average' backpacker is just a tourist who wants a thinly veiled pretense of 'travelling'.
I don't think SE will stop being appealing to these people.
>>
Your average backpacker will go to Central/South America or Europe to begin with. I've never heard another person that I know IRL who wants to go to SEA. I personally would like to go to Sub-Suharan Africa, but there's an awful lot of risk going to a place like that alone as a white American man.
>>
>>1227526
>South America is the next level up after SEA.

Really? I'm from Northern Europe and basically 80-90 % of young people I know who go travelling/backpacking go to South America and it's often in full-package tour-groups.
>>
>>1227473
>Europe
Europe is expensive, SEA is cheap. I vote for Mongolia for the hard-core, it's cheap, has hookers, friendly locals and a laid back attitude.

Really though, if the military fuck up tourism too much, Phillipines is next because it's the same general location, has maybe even more hookers and is probably easier for westerners to deal with than Thailand.

Vietnam has a long way to go before it's 'too western', it's pretty undeveloped, especially compared to Thailand.

>>1227584
>It has to have sun, nice beaches and plenty of bars.
Well not fucking Mongolia then, average temperature of UB is -4c. They have fuck loads of bars though and the sun is nice in the summer. UB has like five Irish pubs.

>>1227586
>I've never heard another person that I know IRL who wants to go to SEA
India and SEA are pretty standard backpacker destinations in Ausfalia
>>
>>1227586
>I personally would like to go to Sub-Suharan Africa, but there's an awful lot of risk going to a place like that alone as a white American man.

That's utter bullshit. I found South America (Colombia and Brazil) to be more dangerous than the places that I went in Southern and Eastern Africa. As long as you don't go into areas with political violence, and you take appropriate safety steps, you'll be fine.
>>
>>1227611
Well where'd you go in Africa? I'd wager that Namibia, Botswana, SA, and Tanzania are safer than parts of Brazil, Colombia, and Venezuela. Outside of those 4 African nations, maybe include Malawi and Lesotho in that assessment, you'd be hard pressed to find tougher travel environments outside war/strife areas.
>>
Africa
>>
>>1227602
>implying most backpackers care about price

It's name recognition not cost
>>
>>1227464
People have been backpacking Thailand and S.E Asia for 30 years If they haven't worn out by now with flights the cheapest they have ever been I don't think they ever will. It's all about finding that next big city as Chang Mai becomes too mainstream and expensive another smaller town in northern Thailand will be overrun by hash smoking hippies.
>>
>>1227615
Ghana is easy mode. Extremely easy mode. Senegal and Gambia as well. Tbh, if it's not in a conflict zone, Africa isn't that hard or dangerous, remote areas and Nigeria notwithstanding.
>>
>>1227593

There's a difference between backpacking and package tours

I feel like SEA is more popular than SA due to safety reasons
>>
>>1227680
>There's a difference between backpacking and package tours

Yeah, I think most do either both of them or just backpacking.

It's just that South America seems soo much more popular, but I think it's reputation for drugs is really driving a lot of it. People who like psychedelics and people who like coke all have reasons to go there
>>
>>1227526
I would rate it like this

>Australia, Europe, USA -> babbys first trip without parents

>SEA or East Asia -> babby wants to see some foreign culture

>South America -> babby now has enough experience to realize that SA is not some crime ridden drug invested shithole

Now after this stage it's either more Asia or Latin America

>India, Nepal -> babbys now in his late 20s and has a spiritual crisis

>Central America -> babbys still in love with those latinas

Then most have children and won't travel anymore, but not babby

>Middle East -> lawrence of arabia become reality

>Africa -> babby finally gets to see some lions and blacks in their natural habitat

Babby is now a grown backpacker, so he is ready for the final level

>Russia -> it gets obscure

>Central Asia, Mongolia -> babby is bored of traditional traveling and ventures into the unknown

After this babby is in his late 50s and finally has the money to do expensive stuff like

>Bhutan
>Antarctica
>Kamchatkha
>>
>>1227691
Honestly i think central Asia is way easier than Africa due to soviet infrastructure still being somewhat functional compared to the colonial stuff in Africa. Plus you can use a single language single Russian is still used a lingua franca in most of the area.
>>
>>1227692
True but I bet not even a seasoned traveler could tell you more than 3 interesting things about Central Asia. I bet most would even struggle to say anything besides Kazakstan. For Africa I think most people do a package trip.
>>
>>1227676
I was referring to aforementioned Southern and Eastern African nations.

But I do agree. The caveat is there are huge numbers and areas of conflict zones in Africa. The entire center of the continent is a no-go for 99% of travelers- DRC, CAR, Sudan, South Sudan, Chad, Angola, are all top-tier difficult to get into/get around. Somalia, Libya, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Eritrea, northern Kenya, eastern Ethiopia, and Mauritania all have serious conflicts on the borders or in-country.

Frankly, this doesn't leave us with much, especially when you factor in the difficulty of little to no travel infrastructure. Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe are good for hitchhiking, but it isn't easy. I've traveled a lot on the continent, and while it's not extremely difficult all the time, to say it "isn't that hard or dangerous" is vastly overstating the competence/self-assurance/knowledge of most travelers.

I ask- if Africa isn't hard or dangerous, then what is?

>Mfw I'll never get to do Russia properly because I'm half black but look arab meaning they'll kick my head in whatever ethnicity they suss me to be

Travelling Arabic nations is a piece of piss though
>>
>>1227741
you could go to dagestan and chechnya.
those places aint safe for whitey.
>>
North Korea
>>
>>1227691
Idk lad, i've done central asia as my first backpacking trip, then india and nepal, and finally SEA, and i live in the middle east, so your chart doesn't apply to everyone
>>
>>1227741
you can do Ukraine at least safely right now. I just got back from eastern Ukraine and there's nigs and arabs everywhere. Huge demographic change from last time I visited ~12 years ago.
>>
>>1228884

shut the fuck up suka
>>
>>1228884
>I just got back from eastern Ukraine and there's nigs and arabs everywhere.
I don't believe that for a second.

Regardless, the black people who end up in Ukraine are harmless.
Some Turkish men might cause problems, but really only with women because they think they can point a finger and Ukrainian women will fuck them.
>>
>>1227464
Cambodia. Many foreign ministiries warn you about cambodia, but it isn't as bad as it looks. It's like Thailand, just with weed and less tourists.
>>
>>1227464

How do people even afford backpacking?
>>
>>1228898
who the fuck goes to ukraine anyways?
>>
>>1228913
it's the cheapest way to discover the world. if you're indian or chineses, you're fucked. but if you live in the western world, you have the opportunity to go anywhere you want.
>>
>>1228914
been on my to do list just for chernobyl. basically because it's a depressing shithole.
>>
>>1228916
i met a chinese guy who was looking for a place to show his pictures in New York. Not everyone there is poor.
>>
>>1228917
Chernobyl is the only place i'd go to in ukraine. You can see so much mor in poland or belarus.
>>
>>1228919

you're retarded; poland is a shithole compared to ukraine just go back to your poohole you fucking polak scum
>>
>>1228921
i'm not from poland, i live in the civilized world. but before i'd go to ukraine, i'd go to poland. I don't want to get shot by russians.
>>
>>1228924

shows how dumb you are; ukraine doesn't want you so go eat a cactus fuccboi
>>
>>1228926
man, I don't want ukraine. They want my Euros more than anything.
>>
>>1228914
Ukraine is a good country for tourism but that language barrier is difficult.
>>1228917
You should also at least go to Lviv.
>>
>>1227465
This.
>>
>>1227464
Thailand will never be worn out for backpackers because they wouldn't come if it wasn't well worn to begin with. Every year a new zip line goes up to keep them happy.

In SEA I think Java has potential. Indonesia has made traveling their easier by getting rid of visas, but people still just go to the same few places. If only the food was better.
>>
>>1228912
Ehhh isn't Cambodia already a well-established backpacker destination? I know it's lawless and all that, but I still think most SEA backpackers go there, no?
>>
>>1227464
Sudan.
>>
>>1229199
Nice try, ISIS.
>>
The Christian southern part of Africa, not South Africa or Zimbabwe but places like Botswana, Namibia, Zambia and Malawi
>>
>>1227473
But Europe is for fat girls who just graduated from high school and took 4 years of French but can still only say "merci"

>>1227519
I assumed he meant prices, they've already gone up too much to consider it an affordable get away anymore.
>>
>>1227464
South or Central Asia. Both are beautiful with no flood of tourists to speak of. I would totally recommend to anyone who wants to step out of their comfort zone.

If I had to pick a single country in both regions, Sri Lanka and Kyrgyzstan. There is plenty to see beyond those though.
>>
>>1227692
Have you been to Africa? Unless you're talking about the warzones or west africa it's still quite functional. You can take buses or drive around just like any other place, it's just a little bit more hassle.

Hell, most of Southern Africa is more civilized than SEA.
>>
>>1227658
1970s backpacking was better.

Oldfags got to visit Iran, Syria, and all the 'Stans safely.

>>1227691
>You will never be 59 year old gentleman backpacker with wrap around mirrored shades, long gray beard, and a telescoping walking cane preparing O2 tanks for K2 ascent from base camp.
>You will never attempt to take on RealTraveler final boss.
Why live?
>>
>>1228898
The blacks/arabs are probably students too poor or with too poor grades to make it to Poland. (the best and the richest go to the UK/USA).
>>
>>1231117
Actually, the poorest go to the UK, German, Sweden, etc.
Haven't you been watching the news of the economic immigrant crisis?
>>
Rough as it sounds, I don't think Africa will ever be *the* spot to be. Pity, because Malawi/Mozambique are great (I'm not too sold on South Africa, but that's just me). As we're talking about general Western folk, there's just too many _black_ fellas about.

I'm going to tag along with what other anons say: Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. When you see how many islands the Indos have that aren't Bali, it sort of begs the question why there hasn't been a major "migration", so to speak. Sulawesi (bonus points for its zany shape), Ternate (if they get their airport infrastructure off the ground [hehe]), and so on.
>>
>>1227464
>Where will the average backpacker go after Southeast Asia -- especially Thailand -- becomes worn out?
Burma, Cambodia and Laos still have several decades before they develop to Thailand tier.

By that time much of Europe with have degraded to a third world shithole. Places like Sweden and Germany will be the new exotic backpacking locations, filled with mystery and danger. Ironically it will be a complete reversal of the current sex tourism trade when men go to find exotic women; women either consensually or non-consensually will get fucked by the new local inhabitants. It will really save on airfare costs for the people of Europe, they no longer have to fly 10 hours to visit an exotic paradise, that place is just the next block over.. better yet, its your block and your neighbour whose rapin.. I mean showing you the benefits of multiculturalism.
>>
>>1227464
east india and nepal, trust me
>>
>>1231126
The UK hasn't really been affected by that at all
