The onsen are okay, but you can get other, better in Kyushu. If you are in the area, go to Yufuin instead, or even Kurokawa for a really amazing onsen experience

Beppu is old and chintzy, not updated.
But I like Beppu, also Kurokawa and Yufuin.

Culturally, Japan frowns on substance abuse (with the exception of alcohol, for whatever reason) and imposes some serious penalties on drug possession/use. Most military chucks are good folks, but the US has created this weird elevated status for them that puts them on a pedestal and makes any sort of infraction on their part seem unthinkable.

As former Navy, I can tell you that they're good guys if you're looking for a time out in town, but avoid the younger dudes who clearly have no experience in adulthood outside of the military. They tend to get drunk and make god-awful decisions that reflect poorly on everyone.

Japan seems like the right place to experience it. The worst place to experience snow for the first time is in cities or generally urban settings. People start to drive like fucking morons and ruin the whole "peaceful" aspect of snow.

Another suggestion: Colorado in the winter, near Pike's Peak or any of the range. Garden of the Gods is a great place for winter shots.

Hiroshima is better than Nara, but that's not to say Nara is bad. Consider the travel time though. If you go to Hiroshima you're spending 6 1/2 hours that day in a train since it's round trip. In Nara you're only spending 3 1/2 hours in the train. Personally I'd stay in the region and do Nara and save Hiroshima for some other time.

Osaka is like an hour drive. If you have a day or two off, you could see other cities nearby such as Kobe, Nara, Himeji maybe even Hiroshima.

I'm in Japan for just over two weeks, from mid(ish) April to early May (Land in Narita at about 8pm).

Wondering if there's a particular area of Tokyo to stay in if I just want to walk around the city checking out shops, restaurants, sites, bars, parks etc. Not much of a club person but would like to see some wacky stuff or some kind of nightlife.

I wouldn't really recommend renting a bike in Tokyo. Your best bet is the JR train system (especially the Yamanote line) and the metro. Get a Suica or Pasmo when you arrive at the airport (they work as top up cards that you "scan" at the gate each time you go in and out and it automatically deducts money)

I worked out my bigger train trip costs to work out to be around 98,000 yen. Cost wise it seems better than the 14 day pass but i'm wondering if it's really better to travel with a long pass or not.

If you only plan on doing Tokyo and the Kansai region, then a two week rail pass should be enough (possibly a 1 week as well).

If you actually plan to stay in Ryokans, no, they are really expensive. With hostels you could scrape by (around 25€/night in Tokyo, maybe somewhere between 15-20€ in less popular places for a bed in a dorm room) if you don't spend too much money on drinking or shopping or something

I found some in Nikko that were 5k-7k yen/night, but those were very low end and actually charged a higher rate for half-board (low rate only included dinner). With that budget for two weeks, hostels are really your only option with maybe a one-night splurge at a ryokan.

What's the climate like over May? Is it around 20 degrees Celsius (and therefore sweater weather for me) or edging closer towards a regular summer?

I was in Japan for a month and almost always me and my friend purchased accomodations via Airbnb

15th-25th in Osaka with trips to Hiroshima, Kobe, possibly Kyushu and a couple other places down south.
25th-6th Tokyo based, plan on trips up north to Sendai, Nikko maybe Gifu.

It can be pretty hot and humid. I was there last year in mid may and I seriously over packed for how warm it was. Tokyo was always a couple degrees cooler than Osaka but still pretty warm. Wore t-shirts and shorts pretty much every day.

I hope I packed everything I need, I'm going to a few different places so I needed a mix of warm and cool clothing.

My GF and I want to do the typical group bath thing nude, but we don't really want to be apart.

I've found several Googling, but they all seem a ways from Tokyo. The only ones I've found near require swimsuits. Which, we'll take if we have to but we prefer nude.

What is a good place to stay for a month if I want to just go for nature trips everyday? I don't want to live in a tent or in Hokkaido. Any Airbnb or hostel recommendations?

Okonomimura. It's a big building with the 2nd, 3d, and 4th floors all being okonomiyaki stalls. Specifically I'd recommend one on the 3rd floor (I think) that had a bunch of frog statues everywhere.

Got my flights booked but haven't organised a hotel, I want a place that's walking distance to everything so I can just walk out the door and spend all day checking out bars, gardens, markets, nightlife, cool stuff etc then walk back to the hotel when I'm done

I'm torn between working in Japan as a bartender or as an English teacher. I already have experience as a bartender but the pay is supposedly low in Japan. I may want to try English teacher of some sort but I fear it's over saturated and will cost me money over a degree which I don't have much of because I fucked up with something useless. Doesn't help I'm trying to move there by next year before the Olympics. Need some help here.
