>be me, embark on eurotrip for work/vacation
>a lot of the places I want to go to /trv/ claims are ugly and overrun with crime (Florence, Berlin, Paris, London, Prague)
>never feel threatened at all during the entire trip thus far
>get to final leg (paris/london/Amsterdam)
>first night in Paris
>go out to find some food
>walking around, a group of Africans approach me, shouting in French, try to take my jacket
>eventually they just fuck off after several seconds of me ignoring them
I'm in town for a week for work(photojournalism). I'm worried now about going out late with expensive equipment.
Tldr - what are some major keys for staying safe in Paris?

If some lovely PoC attacks you, just tell them you voted for Hillary. They will cease to attack you immediately and thank you for being so progressive.

Just have a mean look on your face (get inspired by anyone in the metro during peak hours), and stay away from shoddy looking guys (read arabs, blacks, eastern european in sweatpants/streetwear), especially those in packs.
Keep your head up, don't cross looks and there you go.
For your gear, it's better if you keep it in a somewhat discreet backpack, no obvious camera bag or anything.
But that's very much overkill. In Paris downtown, 99% of the time, it's fine. Worse you will get is some drunken/high dudes trying to scare you a bit and you can shake it off pretty easily.
A very convenient thing to do while I was taking night pics there is to use these velib (rent-a-bike), so you can fuck off quickly if you feel uncomfortable.
