Is there anything worth seeing in New York?
I would like to visit for few days. I have never been to the states before.
Hard mode: I'm not into partying.
>>
I'm tempted to say you're an idiot. You should probably delete this thread and just google, but I'm supposing you're looking for an alternate opinion.

When are you going? I would suggest going to a Yankees or Mets day game, it would be a cool and relatively cheap way to spend an afternoon. I always suggest Cubs day games when people go to Chicago in the summer.

If you like food, there are endless eating options, from genuine Chinese to obscure African cuisine. I'd suggest you look hard for one or two genuine New York pizza shops.

Many different neighborhoods just in Manhattan are rich in history, try surfing Wikipedia to see if there are places you'd like to visit.

I've always wanted to visit MoMA, and there are a number of different museums and stuff in NYC, if you're into that sort of thing.

Central Park seems cool too, but I can't imagine it would be worth it to spend more than 2 hours there, unless you're counting going to the zoo or something.

I imagine the Statue of Liberty is a massive tourist trap, so if you're planning to go, I'd catch the first ferry.

(Disclaimer: I've never been to NYC but it's actually really high on my list of places to go.)

Disclaimer is important. This is in general poor advice for NYC. Central Park is a massive spawling park filled with beauty and interesting people. Authentic genuine NY pizza is easy to find, just to pick up on two of these points. I appreciate the honesty though

I live 90 minutes from the city. NYC is great. Expensive and a little dangerous but just great,

Go to Manhattan. Soho, the East Village, Midtown Manhattan. Fucking great places. Brooklyn is cool too.

Places like Harlem or Queens's aren't very interesting for foreigners but cool not bad.

No reason to go to the Bronx. Strangely enough I have never been to Staten Island so I can;t comment on it.

As for specific things I can't really say, it depends on what you like/want to do.
>>
>>1218057
Staten Island doesn't actually exist. It's a myth New Yorkers tell to tourists.
>>
>>1218057
NYC is not dangerous, it's the safest major city in the country. Possibly behind San Diego.

And Queens has plenty of interesting shit, and even the Bronx.
>>
>>1218053
yeah if you're under the age of 30 and don't like partying, you must be pretty boring
>>
>>1218081
it's called being responsible you barbarian

Native NYCer here, I moved 1.5hrs northwest as the only people who can afford to live in the city are one of the following:
-Very high income couples who don't mind tiny apartments and never want to own anything for themselves
-Soulless Russian/Chinese billionaires who show up once in a while to check on their USD currency sink and pay too much for caviar
-Desperately poor or nearly desperately poor blacks/brown people who live in multi-generational homes or with tons of roommates

There are some decent neighborhoods/places left in NYC, but it's mostly a city of commerce. Many nice museums and galleries call NYC home. It's dirty as fuck, but NYers would call that a part of the charm. There is of course, anything you could possibly want in the way of cuisine and drink. Unfortunately restaurant spaces are so high in rent that the only places which stay in business are mass volume establishments or extraordinarily expensive premium restaurants. If you do find a gem of a place that is both cheap and good it will soon be mobbed by cancerous legions of Yelping hipster cucks and be packed to the gills until it turns into one of those 2 previous things.

If you're rich, you can have an excellent time and stay/dine in absolute luxury that is unmatched in most major cities, so long as you don't mind knowing that every single person who works at your hotel is going back to their shitty project apartment where they can barely afford to feed their kids. A recent trip to a steakhouse with me and the wife cost about $600 all up with 1 bottle of wine and some pre/post meal drinks. It was exquisite, and fortunately we were able to stay at my sister's apartment, which btw is ~300 square feet, and costs $2400/mo.

Look for happy hours, skip the statue tour, take a circle line cruise, eat at Smith and Wollensky if you enjoy steak. New WTC is worth a shot too. Good luck, self cater when you can and you won't go broke.

New York is one of the best food towns in the US, so definitely come here to eat. And mix it up a little, because while we have some of the best fine dining places in the country we also have plenty of good inexpensive places worth checking out. Cuisines from around the world are represented here. (And the real NYC pizza you want is coal oven, which probably means getting a pie at Lombardi's).

If you're a history buff there's a lot to see here. I'm sitting at the top of the ridge where Hamilton distinguished himself during the Battle of Brooklyn. You could wander around the old Five Points area of Gangs of New York fame. You can visit the Tenement Museum to see what life was like here in the late 19th and early 20th Centuries. (That'll leave you in striking distance of both Katz's Deli and Russ and Daughters).

Art is a draw as well - museums here are pretty world class, and there's still something of a gallery scene.

Music - The city isn't quite the music scene it once was, as rising real estate prices have closed down many of the clubs and small venues, but you can still see great live shows here. Latin Jazz is alive and well. And of course there's Broadway, if that's your thing.

Fashion - I have a hard time giving a fuck about fashion, but if you do you'll find most major houses have boutiques here.

Beyond that there's just experiencing the hum of America's greatest city, if just for a few days.

>MoMA
Honestly the only art museum in NYC worth visiting and I enjoyed every bit of it except the Warhol exhibit and poo statues. Guggenheim is utter shit, don't bother.

>Central Park seems cool
It's only of note because it's big. Actually the ugliest and least impressive North American park I've set foot in. the Highline is the better park by far.

>>1218060
Can confirm, the ferry just goes into the bay and turns around

>>1218843
Noice, I'm going there next time. Really looking forward to it.

>>1218848
>One of the best food towns
I thought Portland and Seattle were better, the food in NYC seemed to be pretty bland unless you went to a food truck but maybe I was just really unlucky.

For those who are into partying or at least drinking, what are some good bars in New York?

I'm looking for places that are fun but not super pretentious (not letting single guys in, being super expensive, shit like that).

>>1220099
Drop Off Service, Otto's Shrunken Head, Reunion, the Tippler. Depends on your definition of super-expensive, though- expect to pay $12ish for a cocktail most places.

I can give better/more specific food recommendations if you give me an idea of what kind of food you like.

if you like hipsters go to union pool in williamsburg
if you like yuppies go to mcfaddens in midtown

I've been to Union Pool (on a Monday, though), it was pretty cool.

>>1220640
Yeah he clearly doesn't know what he's talking about.

>>1220475
that's not too expensive (not exactly cheap either), but yeah as long as it's not ridiculously expensive like 20 dollars a drink
>>
>>1220475
oh and I don't care about food so much when it comes to bars, I usually don't eat until after I'm done for the night and I just grab food from a deli or something.

I like places that are fun and have some chance of talking to girls.
>>
NYC seems like a city that'd be decent to live around, but not very fun to visit. The only places I'd want to visit are the Met/MoMa/etc. Maybe some places in Harlem just to say I've been there.
>>
>>1220883
If you like food and nightlife it's definitely fun to visit

I went to NYC for 10 days and spent 3 or 4 whole days in Central Park. Damn that place is GORGEOUS. I'm from Michigan and one of the benefits of this place is that we have some truly great nature. But damn, central park gives it a run for its money. A day in central park is like hitting the highlight reel for all the B and C tier nature attractions in MI.
>>
>>1218843
I wanted to go there, but we lost a day looking for Little Italy when in Chinatown.
>>1218911
>Highline
That's pretty hipster. I personaly prefer Central Park, less touristy, actual trees, open space and locals being locals.
>>
>>1218843
I am another adnon who lives about an hour away and have never seen this. I will check it out sometime.

i could kill a few days at central park too but I'm on the older side. you can rent a boat if it warms up and dick around.
>>
>>1217977
stop it with the genuine cuisine in ny meme. abc here there is nothing genuine in ny unless you want to pay $400 per person in ny. the food is good is close to authintic but not even close to the real thing
>>
>>1217974
Coney Island is one of my favorite places to hang if it's nice out: amusement park, trash filled beach, Russian neighborhood with delicious food.

Museums are pretty clutch, but wear some comfy shoes, walking around on marble all day will give you as my sister has dubbed it "museum feet"
>>
>>1217974
Not OP but I'm in a similar situation.

I'm going to NY on Monday and will stay until the 28th. If I like it a lot I'll probably stay another week.

I want to see all the important stuff and I've bought a guide in my native language for that purpose, so I certainly won't miss the big sights.

But I also want to do some cool stuff that the locals do that Is overlooked buy tourists.

I'll be staying at a four star hotel close to Central Park (no, no the Trump Hotel although I gave that a serious thought, might stay there a couple of nights just for the laughs though heh)

So TL;DR cool stuff to do in NY if you're a young, relatively wealthy white single guy.

Also sorry for asking but what are the legal limits about escorts and would my hotel have any issues if I brought a high end escort to my room?
>>
>>1224701
I love Coney Island when it's hot out. It has a real New York vibe.

And the Latina booty in swimsuits everywhere, hnnnnggg
>>
How much money should I calculate per day (excluding accommodation)?

That is food, entrance to museums and stuff and transport. Is 100$ enough?

Going in Mid-may if that changes anything
>>
>>1225096
thats a weird question. lets elude food. figure your transportation first. tour bus $50, taxi, bus, train, walking, you can play it smart with food like anywhere else mcdonalds, food carts, bars, delism. accomidations are the killer. if your in a hotel you feel comfortable with every thing else is take it or leave it. there are plenty of price options
>>
>>1225096
it really varies because you don't know what you're gonna do exactly

The higher the better when it comes to budget of course, but I think 100 per day should be good if you watch your costs. Maybe a little more just to be safe.
>>
>>1223330
>it's pretty hipster
It's aesthetically pleasing, the air feels clean and there isn't a single Chinese/SEA tourist within earshot
>>
>>1219497
>there is too much delicious food to comprehend
Yeah, maybe if you grew up in a nursing home or had your olfactory nerves completely severed at a very young age. Canada does American food much better to be honest famalam
>>
>>1225367
yeah you're full of shit

New York City has endless good food. I'm curious as to what restaurants you ate at if you think otherwise.
>>
>>1225366
Yes, East Asian tourists are cancer, and it's in the oposite side of Brooklyn Bridge and Chinatown.
But still hipster.
>>
Native NYCer here. Stuff I'd do for a first timer, even if some of it is a little touristy:

- Walk the Brooklyn Bridge (it'll be crowded)
- Walk the high line (it'll be VERY crowded)
- Central park is very large and walking around the whole park will take all day, but a nice thing to do is get a sandwich in whole foods in columbus circle (the southwestern corner of the park) and then take it in and eat on a bench, if the weather is okay.
- There are tons of good casual food places in grenwich village due to NYU. I can't give a good fancy expensive rec if you want that.
- Take the tram between the upper side and roosevelt island (costs a subway fare each way) and walk around roosevelt a bit.
- Take the staten island ferry, and then take it right back since SI is boring. Nice views from the boat though. Alternate: If it's open at the time you're here, take the governor's island ferry and hang out there a bit.
- Go to some outer borough neighborhoods just to take a look and get some good ethnic food. Some recommendations... Astoria for greek, flatbush for excellent jamaican (mild danger alert), riverdale for jewish/kosher food.

Some stuff I DON'T recommend bothering with:
- Statue of liberty. The views you get from the staten island ferry are basically as good, and statue tours are a big pain in the ass.
- Yankee/Mets games unless you're really into baseball. The stadiums themselves aren't really interesting enough unless you care about the game. Not worth the price of admission.
- Going to the top of the empire state building (the observation deck). The views are great, I'm sure, but it costs like 60 fucking dollars. Fuck that.

As you can probably tell I mostly like just walking around looking at stuff. Not into bars or parties or clubs etc.
>>
>>1218060
Like the pool on the roof of the Empire State Building.
>>
>>1226585
At least they have stopped claiming that the tomb of President Grant is in Manhattan.
