>Born in Seoul
>Adopted to America less than a year old
>Virtually zero connection with any korean culture
>Heading to Seoul by myself for a week in March.
>Afraid of being bored for half the trip.

I'm staying in a hostel and I'm pretty good at meeting people, but it is my first real international trip. I've invested in tinder plus and started matching in the area to hopefully discuss a meetup with someone who is familiar with the area.

What should I do? During the night I'll go out drinking/clubs and meals of course explore street food and all that. But besides that what does one do during the day? Walking around and looking at shops is nice but a week of that is maybe too much.

I would like to meet girls, but just general friends would be nice.

tl;dr going to Seoul first time. Speak no Korean. Want to have a good time. What do?
>>
Perhaps check out some temples and go to the border of DPRK

Why are so many Koreans adopted by Americans? Is Korea in fact a third world country or something?
>>
Install KakaoTalk, too.
If you are worried about being alone... I cannot relate to that, there are always people chatting to me, esp. in Asia.
But you can always tentatively plan things like a cooking class or dance class to be around people, and then maybe cancel it later.

I'm at LAX right now waiting for my flight to Korea. I'm gonna be there for a month, so maybe we could work something out?

I'm in a similar situation. I was born in Seoul but raised in America but I do visit every couple years and have a lot of family there. Last summer was the first time I went as an "adult" and I had fun using tinder. Go to hongdae for partying, tons of cool museums/palaces if you're into that, and dongdaemun/edae for shopping.
>>
>>1214772
OP probably has an American citizenship bc he got adopted. Then you don't have to serve. Duh.
>>
>>1214619
I'm going to check out a temple or two but that's not really my thing. The DPRK is something I just want to stay away from lol.

Are the tours worth it? I was thinking about booking a food tour for the first day I'm there.

Seoul is a really great city. A lot of things to do. I really liked their military museum (also it's free!). Even if you're not that much into history and weapons it's pretty cool.
I also recommend that you check out couchsurfing and post your trip there. I meet up with some university students that were practicing English, had picnic with a young married couple that showed random people around a few times per month, went to a hot pot night.
>>
seoul is an architectural eyesore, the streets smell like garbage, and is sort of an overall shithole. the food is also pretty shitty. there are much more interesting megacities in asia.
>>
>>1214857
Are you in the ROK family registry? Did you formally renounce your ROK citizenship?
>>
>>1214857
>Itaewon
This is a shithole, but might be your best bet for english speaking bars and clubs. I recommend Hongdae, Sinchon or any major university area to meet people.

You can head into any smaller bar or restaurant and people are usually friendly to foreigners. If you are asian looking and can't speak the language you can expect a bit of racism, just deal with it.

Personally I had friends in the universities so I just crashed their sports clubs. I joined a badminton club and the gym society. Was great way to meet friends. Your stay might b ea bit short to do it but it's an alternative to drinking and eating every night.

Other than that, a week isn't particularly long if you already have some tinder dates lined up.

sauce, lived there a year. living in china now.

if you have no connnection to korean culture, just go to tokyo. same megacity feel, but objectively better than seoul. you can stay in tokyo for a month and not run of things to do, whereas one day in seoul and you've seen everything there is to see. japan offers literally everything korea offers to travelers except the japanese version is much better.

At least go to North Korea if you have to go to Korea anyway. It's an unique experience that you can have nowhere on earth. Also it's only a matter of time before the North Korean government collapses so this is basically a once in a lifetime chance to see a "real dictatorship" in your life.

For example the biggest regret my father had was not visiting east-germany when he had the chance to go and experience the Stasi life before the Berlin wall fell.

true story. fuck korea. the best travel advice in the world for anyone that wants to go to south korea is: go to Japan instead.

Itaewon is def a shithole.

Lotteworld was fun and cute and I think I paid lke $30 to get in on a student ticket that came with a free beer. They also had a 'korean cultural' museum.

Go to gyeongbok for sure. Eat some Sinseons Seollangtang. Get Samgyepsal, maybe some spicy chicken hot pot. I enjoyed it. Visit Hongdae for sure. I went to Dragon Hill jimjilbang, was nice. Try to visit Dongdaemun for shopping/browsing. Also advise trying to pick up a 4D film if you've never done that.

Also Korea's public transit is about 100% better than Tokyo/Japan's. It was nice. I did prefer Japan to Korea myself, but I lived in Korea for 6 months. It's clear that OP wants to explore his heritage so I hope it's a fulfilling trip for you, anon.

What heritage lol? Korea used to be a part of China for all of its history before Japan took over and pulled them out of the Stone Age (a feat for which the Koreans have still not given thanks). If you want culture and heritage, go to the original, not a shitty copy.
>>
>>1223043
totally agree with this. although it is fun to go see the monument to the comfort women even if it is fake news.
>>
>>1223043
It's big enough of a feat to keep a language alive during hundreds of years of oppression, even if the current version is full of foreign words. Just stay in China and Japan, and shut your mouth.
>>
>>1223043
This is like the 'America doesn't have a culture' meme. Just because a country is part of or influenced by another region or is like something you know, doesn't mean it doesn't have a culture. Even different regions of the same country are different.
>>
>>1223085
>the current version is full of foreign words
There's this wave going around where Koreans are going out of their way to use specific Korean words, and avoiding the Japanese versions as much as possible.

Vegetables
>Japanese: yasai
>Japanese-Korean: yache
>Korean: choiso

Fish cakes
>J: oden
>J-K: odeng
>K: eomuk

Lipstick
>J: kuchibeni
>J-K: guchibeni
>K: lipstick

These Japanese-inspired words have been admittedly ingrained into the Korean language for many years, so much so that many Koreans over the age of 30 are comfortable with it. But there's this fringe group that's trying to revolutionize the Korean language. They want to make it their own again, not some Japanese bastard child.
>you can even see reality TV shows where celebrities use Japanese-based words, and the subtitles/captions will show the Korean version
>>
>>1220162

My friend who taught English in Korea said the kids refused to say they went to karaoke, even the Americanized pronunciation. They all said they went to the singing box
>>
>>1223186
I love how you and Koreans both count English as more Korean than Japanese. lol

But I see what you mean. And it's also a reason why I think it's real hard work to keep a language alive.
>>
All I'm hearing is that koreas only good for eating drinking and fucking, which you can do pretty much in any country that's not Muslim.

Get over it. There's absolutely nothing special about South Korea as a travel destination and 95% of people who have been to both prefer Japan for a fucking reason. It's because Japan is incredible to travel in and south Korea is smelly, dirty, and gray. All of which would be forgivable if it wasn't so fucking boring with so little to do and see.

A few things worth sharing;

Kakaomaps (daummaps) or naver maps (korean only unlike kakaomaps) works better than google maps.

naver translate (papagoo on android) works better than google translate for translating stuff.

Get a T-Money card, saves you a lot of time.

instead of tinder try hellotalk app. it's a language exchange app that's free for downloading. it's supposed to be used for education purposes but there are many university students which mingle on there and are generally easy to ask out. I managed to meet 2 local girls using it

when I visited sk as a student in 2015 I found tinder to be pretty ineffective for meeting girls. most of them swipe and reply twice before ignoring you.
>>
>>1228765
Tinder works just fine in Korea. Busan and Seoul at least.

Were you not trying to organize a meeting soon after chatting? Most of my day time dates are filled with exclusively tinder, night time is pub and clubs girls.

>>
>>1229005
Ah yeah that'll do it. I live in Tongyeong. But bus up to Busan every weekend. I boost and match tinder while there. Then organize dates for the following week, or same day stuff.

I will say that even though girls that are dtf do exist on korean tinder, a lot are expecting standard korean dating protocol.

Best girls I've met were in person at the Thursday Party places or clubs without a cover charge. Dudes are so thirsty at standard clubs it makes the whole environment different.

OP here. Thank you all for posting/your help/general contributions. I had maybe the best week of my life in Seoul. It was amazing. I was terrified of being in a foreign country alone and unable to communicate the language but I was able to get by in solo travels but also met a ton of people/made friends. Mostly from the hostel but also just out and about.

I stayed a GGuesthouse (not guesthome). It's a hostel I highly recommend and would go to again. It is maybe 200 feet from the subway, and within a two minute walk of the majority of bars/clubs in the area. Extremely convenient location, great people, and the staff are great. The shower situation is kind of a drag but it's not that big a deal if you plan for it. LIke any hostel bring ear plugs.

I did see some of the local history, the palace, tower, the national museum, and did some shopping at gangnam. but easily the best part of the entire trip was just meeting people and going out drinking/dancing. like someone else said, just be moderately aggressive and go up to someone and you'll have a 100% conversion rate at a decent conversation. in the hostel they sold beer so in the common room i'd just offer to buy someone a beer, we'd drink, and i grew two pretty significant sized groups this way. maybe 8ish people in each one where we would go out and party.

the burden of proof is the aggressor and the one suggesting that his contrarian opinion is the right one.

my anecdotal experience is seoul was the best week I've ever had in my life. That doesn't mean Seoul is for everyone or it'd be the best for everyone and relying on anecdotal experience for a scientific argument is pretty stupid.

>>1228449
I'm pretty confident you're just trolling, but in the case you're not, I think you really need to learn some perspective. I don't understand why you'd spend so much time in a Korea thread to talk about how much you hate Korea.
>>
>>1228765
my buddy i met there said the same thing. I never got around to using it but makes sense. he got some dates with some pretty hot women there that way.

also another note, I was blown away with the average attractiveness + top end beauty of korean women. From behind honestly I'd even sometimes see a woman and think she looks great, go up to here and see she's like 40 lol.

that and I surprisingly enjoyed the fashion in Korea and how Koreans were more proactive with what they wear and looking good.

What company does the best tours of the JSA?

Hey OP! I posted earlier in the thread about meeting up, but I couldn't really figure out proxy shit and posting once I got to Seoul (lol). Sorry couldn't meet you up, but I am so glad you had a great time! I had a good time too, I just got back last Tuesday. Did you check out the protests? It was one of the coolest experiences I got to have.

Not original poster but would also like the answer to this.
>>
Hey OP! Glad to hear that you had a great time. How much did the trip cost you? Like all the expenses you had, and the flight.
>>
Seoul can get pretty boring.
Don't get me wrong, its a phenomenal city : wonderful food, cool architecture, clean,modern...

But still it can feel boring to a foreigner, i stayed in a goshiwon near sinchon for about 3 months ( so not the worst place ) and even after trying everything i could i felt bored.

Its really hard to meet koreans really get a connection.

I'm going in May to see my exbf. I guess I was thinking about doing some shopping while there.

Where are some brilliant cheap tech markets?

That's what travellers do in literally any city in the world where you have hostels and travellers willing to have fun. You must have not travelled very much, which is why meeting people in a hostel and drinking seems so incredible and novel to you.

That's not an experience specific to Korea. None of what you said refutes the argument that there is nothing that really distinguishes Korea as a travel destination.

Just go to Japan instead, where you can have the above experience PLUS clean city streets, courteous people, sightseeing that's not ugly bullshit like it is in Korea, much better food, more civilized acting people, actual culture...

Need I go on?

Korea is B O R I N G.
>>

>Need I go on?
Judging from your posts, you must
>>
>>1232349
maybe he feels the need to keep going on because he bring actual arguments to the table and all you koreafags have on your side is ad hominem.
>>
>>1232353
Not an argument. OP wanted things to do in Seoul, no one asked whether to go there in the first place
>>
>>1232313
>Its really hard to meet koreans really get a connection.

it wasn't for me.

>>1232317
not most of gangnam. I found things were significantly more expensive there.

>>1232348
Okay, it's true about the hostel part, but the rest is simply wrong. I met more people walking around there than I had anywhere else I've traveled.

The streets in Korea were cleaner than any American city I've been in. Hard to imagine any major city being any cleaner.

I will agree that people werent' as courteous as I hoped but I think half of that was because I don't speak Korean. The handful of sight seeing I did was gorgeous. The food was amazing and extremely cheap. I repeatedly found myself thinking "this would be 2-3 times more expensive in America". People were plenty civilized. "Actual culture" is just about as stupid as saying "Actual people"

Korea isn't boring. You're just annoying and for whatever reason completely biased and/or trolling and I need to remind myself to stop wasting time on you.

>>1232353
You've been samefagging this entire time. you're not fooling anyone.
>>
>>1232556
now that your standards have been set so low, your mind will be really blown once you get around to visiting japan
>>
>>1232353
You don't provide any arguments. You say the same thing every thread. You have limited vocabulary. You never post details because you haven't really travelled much.

I'm really in doubt right now. I want to go to Taiwan and I want to go to Korea, but I'll probably have to choose between one of the two. I'll go in June and I have three weeks to spend probably. I love to do all kinds of stuff, but I'm mostly really crazy about food, culture and people. Maybe it's even an option to visit Taiwan for one week by booking a flight from Korea, but I don't think that a week would be enough to see everything I want in Taiwan. So this is what I know/think:

Taiwan
>Night markets are wonderful
>Enormous variety in food, also really tasty
>Friendly people
>Beautiful nature
>More adventurous

Korea
>Seoul is a wonderful metropolis
>Interesting culture
>I know a girl in Korea who wants to be my guide
>lots of interesting restaurants
>better weather
>Flight would be cheaper

You guys have some advice for me maybe? I mean, I think Taiwan is more interesting maybe, but I've been wanting to go to Korea for years now because of their interesting modern culture. Also the fact that a local wants to be my guide really makes it interesting.
>>
>>1232834
You worry too much
>>
>>1232838
You're right. My gut feeling says Taiwan so I should probably choose for Taiwan.
>>
>>1232170
>>1232267
yeah 3rd anon, would also like to know answer
>>
>>1232834
I've been to both, and really I'd say it comes down to what you want. If your gut feeling says Taiwan then go for it, though I'm not saying Korea is shit or anything. You say you like food, culture, and people, Taiwan has cheap as fuck good food, and I'd say friendlier people in general. Culture comes down to preference though, and if you really love Korean food then that's a better option. For what it's worth I'm a bigger fan of Taiwan.

I've personally also been saving up to go to korea for a month(don't speak korean either)

I was thinking of staying in a goshiwon. does anyone here have experience staying in goshiwons? can you book a room in advance or what. is payment up front, or on departure? I heard they're about 300-400 dollars per month, is this a realistic estimate?
>>
>>1232615
can you just fuck off back to /a/ ?

If I'm getting a Korailpass, should I bring my creditcard when I come to redeem it or just use it for paying online? I.e. should I bring my creditcard to Korea for it or not?
>>
>>1233035
I have plenty of experience with them.
You can book the room in advance online by emailing them but the payment in made when you arrive.

They will just write your name on a small receipt with the price and the expiration date.
When your days are over you can take extention ( i took 2 weeks 2 times and the guy didn't seem bothered at all)

There always seem to be some kind of availability.

Protip : even if they are more expensive try to get a window that goes outside, trust me it can save your life in these.

i like seoul but this guy is still right
>>
>>1232834
It's pretty much universal traveller consensus that when it comes to the developed asians countries, Taiwan and Japan are a league above Korea when it comes to places to visit.
>>
i went to korea in december. best 2 weeks of my life. i want to go back later this month. there was so much to do. dont let the weebs tell you its boring. im sure japan is super fun but korea is awesome
>>
>>1234337
how much of what you did didn't involve eating, drinking or fucking? are you a degenerate? degenerates and delulu koreaboos are the only demographics I've seen that seem to enjoy korea as a destination.

eating is one of the main things to do anywhere tho. but besides those things i did a little bit of sight seeing. but mainly i just went to see what it would be like to live there. i just kept it pretty casual the whole time. im not really a huge degenerate i only hungout with one girl for like one day. i can see how it would be super fun for someone who isnt really into the culture though. im pretty into korean media and stuff so it was really fun for me to go to all the places ive seen and heard about. but if you dont really know much about asia i probably wouldnt go there first

>>1234467
I'm sorry, is there something you would like me to elaborate on?

pic related is from hongdae. fun area with a lot of fun people. seoul in december is the most comfy place ive ever been in my life
