Went in the "rainy season," when supposedly it was going to be miserably hot and raining all the damn time. It did rain -- once a day, usually late afternoon, usually less than an hour. It was hot, but not noticeably hotter than other trips to SEA.
And nothing was crowded. I mean, yeah, there were people there, especially at the more famous sites -- but not overwhelmingly, and few at some of the less well known ruins.
