*Note about the JR Pass*
Many people ask about whether or not the JR Rail Pass is worth it. It depends on your itinerary.

Plug your itinerary into Hyperdia to determine ticket costs, then compare to the below JR Pass options:
>7 day Pass: 29,110¥
>14 day Pass: 46,390¥
>21 day Pass: 59,350¥

Please check the /trv/ sticky before asking questions. It's filled with links to great resources, many of them specific to Japan travel.

Okay, so how much would I get stared at in Japan? I'm 6'3 and built like a pro football player. I've wanted to visit Japan for a long time, and have even learned passable Japanese, but I'm afraid I'll look like some monster stomping around.

Go to Ryogoku, take the west exit. Continue to the left, you'll see a conbini (iirc familymart). After that turn left to a small street. You'll see a machine right after your turn with 70 yen coffee, 50 yen some carbo drink and 40 yen "surprise" drink (random pick, you can't see it, usually some cheap juice or so)

I'm urged to decide on vacation and would like to go to Japan already

The most feasible and reasonable frames are probably
April 15 - May 7
May 27 - June 15
Oct 14 - Nov 5

What are your pros/cons?
>>
Anyone else really miss Japan? I really want to go back there sometime soon.

Out of interest, why?

I loved it while I was there, and it really seemed like a place I could spend a year, but I was only there for under 2 weeks, so please me give me the cons!

My main concern with Osaka was the dialect, will that be much of a barrier for someone learning Japanese? Also I heard they were rude cunts, but I take that with a massive grain of salt.

April/May could catch the end of sakura season if you go further north
May-June starting to get hot as shit, not much going on honestly since it isn't even obon season
Oct/Nov fall is nice everywhere, it's cool but not freezing. dunno about festivals and shit that could be going on

I'd probably pick oct/nov personally of those three, I'm going at the end of march/beginning of april for the sakura though

I think Kyoto has horrible traffic making buses useless. There are also many tourist destinations so trying to get around on trains can suck. There are tourists who don't even know how to line up for a train and they are scattered around on the platform.

Osaka has crowded trains too, but that's during rush hour and late weekend evenings. If you're just starting to learn Japanese you won't be able to pick up on the accent anyway since it's all so new. It'll just be Japanese to you. Different areas of Japan all have dialects so don't stress about it. Kyoto's dialect is different from Osaka's. Osaka's is different from Okinawa's, and so on. I think people from Osaka are pretty chill and I overall like them.

I do like how more people in Tokyo speak English, but it reminds me too much of a popular tourist destination I worked at for a couple years. I know as polite and friendly they seem, they're stressed out and tired of helping foreigners that can't even say "thank you" in Japanese. It can take a toll on you guys. But it's just my opinion.

I found out afterwards that those things can be rented from the airports. Just google 'japan portable wifi' and you should find lots that offer this rental services.

Depending on your country, you may even get the portable wifi at your airport, and then returning it when you get back..

This is simply not true of the average tourist that tries to eat like they're back home (getting full off meat, eating until full instead of when their body has had enough, etc)

Even after a couple study abroads my eating habits didn't really change until a month of working there and seeing how much money I was wasting on food

Plot twist, he has no Internet connection and can't afford another week of it. He has no way of reading your comments and is now starving to dead because of being a baka gaijin and eating everything from English friendly menus.
>>
>>1211781
This probably happened to me too. I didn't even realize how much money I was spending on food until I went out with Japanese guys. I really felt ashamed of always ordering big with extras.
Once I got back, it really made me think about how big portions are here, even from small serving sizes, they are huge.
>>
>>1211698
All the time. There are so many famous shrines and temples there that it's constantly busy with international and domestic tourists.

>>1211727
I noticed a lot of Americans have no idea what nutrition or portion size is, so they order way too much food, inhale it, and think the cashiers are amazed by the amount of food they can devour, when really they're kind of disgusted. I won't lie, I'm guilty of ordering multiple sets and eating it all too, but I know to order my food as take away when I want to chow down.

If you guys are shopping with kitchen access you'll need to buy:
>rice
>spices
>local produce (think daikon or nameko)
>noodles
>eggs
>soup broths

Put it all together and you're done. Curry, tofu, fish, and occasionally chicken is pretty good too. You just need to switch out of this meat all the time and for every meal mentality. Unless you're body building you probably don't need all of this food. Have a good time learning how to cook and don't get discourage when the first time comes out bad.
>>
>>1211805
To piggyback try subbing out meats for potatoes, especially in sauces like curry. Still delicious and filling
>>
>>1211805

That's odd, as the time 2 weeks I was there I barely saw any tourists outside of the main areas. Was I just lucky in that regard?

This is such a hard decision, because I adored everything about kyoto, whereas I found Osaka to be a bit of a concrete jungle, and kind of gross. I want to be realistic about it, as I'll be there for a year, but my heart is still saying Kyoto.

If there's anything else I should know that could sway my decision please throw it at me!

For anyone applying to teach there, for the love of God, make sure your application forms, resume, and cover letter all have perfect spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
The way you address somebody in an email, like using the word: "Dear _____", and "Yours sincerely, _____" really matters.
Don't neglect these formalities, act totally professional.
You don't need teaching experience if you can prove that you're intelligent, likeable, professional, and good with working with people.
If you do a skype interview with a potential employer, for the love of God, dress appropriately!

japan is overrated.

Every fucking little town is the same. Ill give you kagoshima as something different, theres a fucking volcano in the middle and a nice aquarium, kumamoto close, and if you are willing to go futher theres nagasaki. If you plan going to japan for a month, spend a week in kyuushuu, underrated as fuck.

Tokyo is good but if you stay for a month you will discover whats wrong with it and get bored (plus its expensive) and all those gaijins and everything made "easy for gaijin" ruins the experience.

Also im stupid and decided to learn japanese a few years back because i LOVE a japanese band and wanted to learn the lyrics. So im stuck going there at least once every 2 years.

>>1211846
yes, WALK,theres a lot of shit to see, also around ueno.

Dont buy shit on vending machines, only idiot gaijins use them frequently. Instead go to aeon to do grocery. Family mart, 7 11 is also a waste of money but there are little options in some places in tokyo.

Hey guys, this is a weird question; I'm travelling to Japan for about 2 weeks in July and I'm considering going to either Seoul or Sapporo for a few days at the end of the trip. Which one should I go to? What does Sapporo offer in the Summer other than a day trip to Furano?
>>
>>1211994
>I've read that English friendly menus can be overpriced for the tourists
Never heard of that. Most places don't have an English menu anyway. Often there are pictures on the menu though, but it would sure help to learn some words nevertheless.
>>
>>1212060
I just asked and was surprised that a lot of places had one just in case. Major chains like Yoshinoya and Coco's will probably give you one anyway

But yeah point at anything and say "kudasai" and you're good.

What's a realistic budget per month while living in Tokyo? No sightseeing or anything, just getting by. I have no idea what regular grocery shopping there costs, that's why I'm asking.
>>
>>1212207

"In relation to dolls manufactured for a sexual purpose, if the doll appears to be a depiction of a child under 18 years of age, the doll is considered to be objectionable and prohibited under Regulation 4A"

I brought back loli dvds in my checked baggage and didn't declare porn, so they don't check everything, but I wouldn't do it again - it's not worth the risk for items you'll probably only use once or twice anyway

If you do bring it back, don't declare anything - if they see it as a depiction of a child, you're fucked either way; if they just find it 'objectionable', I'm guessing they be lenient and just seize it if you say 'I didn't know it counts as pornography'

You can make decent, healthy meals for ~500-700 yen

A lot of stuffed like sliced meat, bread, cheese, etc. are available in small individual packs, which is convenient because it keeps food fresh and reduces waste.

Many convenience stores only seem to stock small bottles of coke and other drinks (hard to find 2L), so either expect to shell out for drinks or drink water.

There's a chain restaurant that had some questionable form of beef with a good amount of rice + miso + something else I think for ~600 yen.

Eating out generally costs about ~1500-2000 yen. Pizzas are ridiculously expensive even with coupon and pick up. Any kind of food delivery is pretty expensive, ~2000 yen at a minimum, though some do sell crap for cheap (~700 yen).

So you're looking at 20,000-65,000 yen for a month for food & drink, depending on how whether you want cook at home or eat out. I spent ~60,000 overall when I was in Japan for three weeks recently.

>I spent ~60,000 overall when I was in Japan for three weeks recently.
Same. I went three weeks as well. I only ate out though. This time I want to mainly cook at home.
What are some good meals to cook on the cheap? I've been to a Supermarket like once or twice. Always left a bit overwhelmed by the amount of things I didn't know what they were.
>>
>>1212243

Diced chicken breast and rice. Bring Nandos sauce with you and throw in a few vegetables if you want.

Convenience stores also sell cheap prepared meals you can eat cold or heat up in a microwave, but they're not that great. I liked to snack on bread + sliced ham, and 'Big Chilli Tomato' instant noodles.

I forgot to mention that there's those ramen places of course, which cost less than 800 yen from vague memory
>>
>>1212263

Just the thread I've been looking for!

I'm considering a teaching position in Japan (I'm uncertain of the prefecture or definite location right now), but if anyone has experience teaching in the Land of the Rising Sun, I'd like to hear about it.

I have my BA and a TEFL certification (as well as a year's worth of experience teaching English to adult immigrants), so I'm wondering where I may be able to fit into this equation.

Full disclosure: I'm not some weeb or otaku, I just think I'd have more fun in Japan compared to, say, South Korea, but I don't know yet. I've only got travel experience in parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Sri Lanka.

Not sure how much I can help, but I've been "teaching" English in Japanese public schools for the better half of a decade. Been in the same place the whole time - a rather rural town - and I love it. The people in town are great, the students are wonderful, and the teachers whom I work with are some of the best people I've met.

From what I can tell, your experience as an English teacher can range from heaven to Hell depending on where you're placed, whom you work with, how you live, and your own expectations of the job.

There are generally two routes you can take:
Become the main teacher at an Eikaiwa (English language school for supplementary lessons).
Become an Assistant Language Teacher at public schools.
Each position has its pros and cons as well as good employers and not so good employers. The first step you should take is to figure out which position (ALT or Eikaiwa teacher) is what you're looking for.

Is Dec 28 - Jan 5 a bad time to visit Tokyo in terms of monuments, museums, and clubs also how's new year's in Tokyo?

Its exactly the same as Christmas from whatever Christian country you're from. Everything is definitely shut down on the day. Most people are home for the lead up and a lot of people take the next day off because they can

It only affects going out to clubs and bars since people are with their families but wage slaves still have to work their shitty retail/service industry jobs. But Tokyo is one of the largest cities in the world so the sheer number of people ensure there are still people out at night.

This may be a long shot but I have a question for anyone that has lived in multiple places in Japan or at least stayed in multiple places for extended periods of time. I got accepted into a program that will allow me to study the language while also working during my stay. I will be moving to Japan in October and my stay will be for at least 1 year, probably 2. I was wanting to get some opinions on what your favorite area was, in terms of commuting, jobs, and convenience. I have already looked into the basic necessities that I will need and I think I am set those regards. I have the option to choose the ideal location for where I want to live and work while studying and I would love to hear some opinions (good or bad) from you guys.

Yeah, Tokyo. Stayed in Shinagawa on both visits, pretty nice and on the Yamanote line so great transport links. Go with Keikyu EX Inn Shinagawa if you can, stayed in Prince Hotel recently too. Keep in mind this was me and a friend, so twin rooms, splitting all costs and tabs down the middle. I think the "Tokyo is expensive" meme is way overblown. 15,000 a day was pretty feasible while still being able to get drunk as shit. For girls, try to find groups and start speaking English. There will be eventually a group thats willing to speak with you. Where can I ask visa questions?
My situation: staying in Japan right now, want to apply to a school; for that I have to update my visa, but I can't do it while staying in the country, so I'll have to leave and apply for a new one. The thing is, the deadline of it getting approved is until 20th of March, as the school cannot do their part on the process since then. Even if I leave the country tomorrow (probably will, plan to leave at Friday at the latest), the question's whether it'll take until later than the deadline. It took about three weeks last time I applied for a visa, but considering that applying for a visa immediately after returning from the country is unusual, I'm really in a pinch. Is there anyone I can talk to to explain my situation and ask for hasten the process?

Hey lads.

Going to be backpacking around in Japan for two weeks in July. Plan is to start in Osaka or Tokyo and book a return flight whenever. Never been before and going with someone that speaks minimal amount of Japanese. My questions are:

What are some things to see/do? We are already planning on seeing the Gion Matsuri in Kyoto.

Where are some fun places to go clubbing/drinking in Toyko?

I'm going to visit Japan by the end of march this year. My route is as follows:

Landing NRT --> Shinkanzen to Kyoto and stay there for a four days
Moving on to Hiroshima and Miyajima for two days
Riding the train back to Tokyo and stay there for another week. The time I'm going to stay at Tokyo, I'd like to go hiking one or maybe two times. I'd find out that Mt. Fuji is not really enjoyable by this season. Any other mountain nearby to take a few lovely pictures of Fuji-san?

I have been to Berlin, Paris, London and obviously Tokyo but not Rome, and I would say its pretty comparable to Berlin in terms of price for food and drinks, and you don't need to tip so overall probably cheaper. I think accommodation would generally be a little bit more expensive than Berlin. From memory I think public transport is a little bit less expensive than Tokyo but I could be wrong, but the train infrastructure is more developed than Berlin's and I would say more user friendly (coming from an English speaker's pov that knows no German or Japanese).
In any case, Tokyo was cheaper than Paris and London in my experience. There might be a few things that are more expensive, but overall cheaper.

>>
>>1214105
Even if you knew how to explain what you like, unlike western countries, it is very impolite to ask for a meal without a certain ingredient in it. Some cooks don't even comprehend the idea that something could be taken out of the meal.
That said, there are a few restaurants that will do it, and all trash food places like McDonalds and KFC will do it - but that's not Japanese food.

You should get used to Japanese cuisine, and eat more vegetables because of obvious reasons.
>>
>>1214105
It's >>1214108 replying again.
There is also a law that cooks can't handle cash before cooking without washing their hands. So a lot of restaurants (even high-class restaurants) will make you order on a vending machine that prints out a ticket with your order on it which you then hand to the cook/waiter. These machines usually don't let you subtract an ingredient, but they do let you add ingredients.

I'm a very picky eater with all foods and I can tell you that I don't worry about food in Japan. I just eat it and it's actually really good. If you're certain you don't want veggies stick to plain white rice. I find Japanese dishes don't have a lot of veggies and if they do they're tasteless and don't change the texture of the food noticeably.

I know enough Japanese to order my food without items, but I know that it's rude so I just suck it up and eat what I'm given. If you order something without veggies, don't be surprised if it comes with it anyway or they get confused that maybe you're a vegetarian and serve you more veggies. Just shut up and eat it.

As for sushi, it's ok, but honestly I only eat it when someone gets excited for me to try it and buys it as a present. The seafood is great in Japan and if you're not put off by sashimi, I say try it. Have a good time trying new foods in Japan.

It was honestly a lot of fun. I walked around there 2 different nights because there was a lot to see and lots of people to talk to. Yakuza don't give a crap I'd say. If you have a good way to hold JPY, and are willing to lock up thousands of dollars in a currency you can't use then do it.

If not, you can still look at currency forwards, but I don't think it will be worth it for thousands of dollars.

Whenever the current rate makes your travel plans affordable (or your contract work in another country worthwhile) then you should exchange or lock in the rate. Don't bet in either direction.

Help guys.
Is this really a feasible plan made by my cousin that will be done in the last week of May.

What's the tourist spot in Akiba, aside from window shopping?

What's the recommended shop at / near ShinSekai cause I'm gonna buy nendos with whatever's left of my money, since I plan not to buy anything in Akiba due to my low budget of 160000 yen
>>
>>1214738
I think you should skip Odaiba unless you have a particular interest in that area.
As for Osaka, are you sure you don't mean Shinsaibashi? Shinsekai is a different area that doesn't have many shops.
>>
>>1214738
That's a tight ass plan, my dude. Don't forget you might be jet-lagged.
>>
>>1214829
Odaiba, I think we're just doing it for the gundam.
Shinsekai were doing it for the streetfoods any anime stores nearby?

>>1214856
I only had travelled once outside the country and it was also 6 days in HK, it also involved lots of walking. Hope jet lag wont affect me this time.

Any "hidden" location tips for Sapporo? Stuck here for an extra day because of logistics.
>>
>>1214738
That is a lot for 6 days. I spend 3 days in Akihabara myself.
Obviously it's up to you and your interests but you're going to be sprinting if you want to get through some of these places in a couple of hours.
E.g. You could easily spend half to a full day in the Arashiyama area.

Keep in mind that you've still yet to learn how to get around in Japan. You'll get on the wrong train at least once.
Maybe stick to just Tokyo and its surrounding areas. Right now it looks like you googled "top things to do in Japan" and added them all to a list without consideration of all the other things you could do around these famous points. You'll save on travel costs too with your budget; Taking a shinkansen isn't cheap.

There isn't a whole lot to do in Akiba other than (window) shopping.
If you're a fan of Love Live you could visit the Kanda Myojin shrine which is a short walk away or you could visit a maid/cat/train/tsundere vampire ninja poker cafe.
Perhaps take a visit to the Akiba Don Quixote instead while you're here, they're all somewhat similar but the Akiba branch does have more of the anime goods and cosplay.
I don't know what you're into but some major stores in Akiba are Yodobashi Camera, Animate, Donki, Mandarake, Toranoano, Gamers. The various Lamarr/Mulan/Alibaba branches are kinda fun to browse if you're new to the place too. Note, it will take more than 2 hours to get through all of these.

If the 100 yen store you're referring to is the same as the one I'm thinking, then it's actually a lot closer to the Harajuku station, 1 stop away. And there isn't much point in visiting unless you want cheap household items. Though Harajuku itself has a street worth visiting if you like alternative fashion styles.

I'm not going through your whole list but lastly, if you want anime stores in Osaka then they're all on Otaroad, a bit of a walk from Shinsaibashi.

Thinking about buying a one way ticket in the summer of 2018. I'll spend the next year learning some Japanese.
23 currently ( 24/25at time of trip)
African American.
Culinary Graduate, and 3 years in high class restaurants.
Question. How long can I get away with being homeless/backpacking?
Chances of working for food and lodging?
Any tips and advice will be appreciated.

>buying a one way ticket to Japan

Yea, and when your visitor's visa runs out, then what? Really rethink that through before actually doing it.

You won't be hired for any kind of work since you'll have a tourist visa (plus you're black with *theoretically* one year of Japanese which won't get you very far) so that's off the table.

You can be homeless for as long as you want. A cop may come by and ask for your details which would include your place of residence. Not sure what they would do if you didn't book a place, but to be honest, your plan is pretty terrible as of now. Best bet is to apply now for an English teaching job and hope one of the companies over there throws a visa your way.
>>

Ok weebs, I am in Tokyo at the moment, where can I buy a frog coin purse from Naruto (and other Naruto themed clothes). Went to akihabara today and looked in almost every store and it's just filled with shitty figurines, those UFO toy grabbers or hentai. Couldn't find any Naruto merchandise to save my life.

You can literally go to a show every day in Shibuya and Shinjuku alone.

At Tokyo station BF1, Tokyo dome city and Skytree 3F Westyard.

It also depends on the level you speak the language. There are people who start every sentence with 私は and use anime terms. The latter obviously wont apply to you.

yakiniku is expensive but that's to be expected in an only meat dish in a country where meat is expensive to begin with, even then you can get a 90 minute all you can eat for pretty cheap
