>Taking a bus to Montreal by myself in February
>Have 7 or 8 days to spend in Canada
What is the best way to go about this?:

>Montreal and Quebec City
OR
>Montreal and Toronto

Or maybe something else? Is Ottawa worth a few days?
>>

pick 1 (one)
seriously, you couldn't pick a worse time. We mainly stay indoors from mid january to end of february because it's cold as fuck
>>

montreal / quebec city hands down.

Go top montreal/toronto. but like the other anon said you've chosen the worst period to travel in Canada. It's cold as fuck
>>
>>1191292
Good suggestion
>>
As a Canadian I seriously wonder why anyone but Americans living on the border who have never been to another country would want to come here.

It's like America but with football instead of hockey and quebecois socialists instead of texans. I guess we have less Mexicans at least, but we have muslims and chinks instead.
>>
>>1191550
Well, the exchange rate is usually good.
>>
>>1191550
Well I live in Canada and I travel around here. Americans travel around America too. Travel doesn't have to be some year long planned thing halfway around the world my man.

Also, Montreal and Quebec City aren't like anything I'm aware of that you can see in America. Mad Francophonie. I would definitely go with that pair over the one with Toronto. I don't know anything about Ottawa except its reputation as the most boring, adulterous place on Earth. Maybe a day to see Parliamentary buildings or whatever. But seriously, plan out some stuff to see indoors. If you aren't from just across the border you'd need an entirely new wardrobe to wander around.
>>
>>1191550
I think quebecois separatists are definitely more militant than texans.

Oh please, don't act as if you're enjoying yourself walking around in -25C weathers.

Ottawa isn't bad as a tourist honestly. Especially in February you can skate on the canal which is beautiful, you can see the parliament buildings, they have a nice art gallery, the Gatineau is nearby and nice for hiking or skiing if you have a car, etc... It's only boring living in Ottawa once you've gotten over the initial sights and are now going on your tenth school trip to the same art gallery. I'm glad I left, but people who've gone to see it with me generally like it.

>>
>>1193394
Why do so many people on /trv/ dislike Ottawa?
>>
>>1193397
Ottawa is just vast expanse of decrepit strip malls, parking lots and beige single family homes full of insufferable NIMBYs and jaded public servants. There's nothing special about this place beyond a few nice old buildings. Ottawans actually take pride in the fact that it's a big city that feels like a shitty backwater town. Also, the public transit is probably the most pathetic for a city of this stature in the world. The only good thing about Ottawa is the parliamentary precinct (only really worth one visit) and the food is good if you like shawarma and pho (which I do).

The only people who seem to hold Ottawa in high regard are people from backwater shitholes like the town I'm from.
>>
>>1193594
When I went to Ottawa it seemed like a big small town. What's wrong with the busway?
>>
>>1193397
Because having the parliament and various government buildings somewhere doesn't mean it's a worthwhile travel destination.
>>
>>1194544
Ottawa has some nice museums and the best ice skating experience in all of Canada.

Montreal/Quebec City.
Quebec is one of the most interesting places in Canada. You should've gone in autumn. It was so beautiful. When I went, I preferred to go hiking rather than the cities. I think Canada excels in its outdoors stuff. Cities are very generic and boring desu.
>>
As many others noted, you should do Montreal/Quebec City. Not sure about your timing, but definitely checkout Igloofest in Montreal and the Carnival in Quebec City.

Don't waste your time with Ottawa.

You should do more research on hostels. There's one on Sherbrooke near St Laurent that's good and more central.

Oh and regarding all the faggots who complain about weather : just go to a local surplus store and get $40 military winter boots. That will take care of the most annoying part. Dress warm and you won't even notice it's freezing outside.

That's also the time of the year when it's the easiest to pick up girls at bars and clubs. I'll let you figure out why.
>>

more expensive, but it's totally worth it, they have an amazing pub/club in the basement and great shows and live musicians come in. I'd suggest Montreal and then only a couple days in QC, there isn't really a reason to see Toronto if you are seeing Montreal

I second the comment on long john. Just make sure to get the trendy ones (pic related). Girls love them (and guys too if that's your thing).

Other than that, good boots, warm mittens (not gloves), 100% wool hat and socks, a warm coat and a few layers underneath will make this a fun vacation as opposed to a brutal one.

Spend as much time as you can outside and make sure to get up the mountain downtown.
>>
>>1194839
Ah okay, I agree in that case.
>>
Depends on what you want. I live in Toronto, our city freak out about winter while the rest of the country points and laugh. Our crazy frogs CELEBRATE Winter by having an outdoor festival in FEBRUARY: Quebec Winter Carnival

I was dragged to Quebec City and Montreal as a kid, I remember I was freezing in my snowsuit, the same snowsuit that kept me warm during snowball wars in Toronto (back in my days, throwing snowballs was still school legal as long as you don't pack ice or the rock from the Fifth Business).

Toronto is ugly in the wintertime, we don't get as cold as Montreal or Quebec, so our snow turns quickly into slush. Bring an umbrella for the wet snow and make sure your winter clothes are waterproof. Always check the weather before you go out because we sometimes get freezing rain.

If you manage to snag a BNB right next to a subway or the PATH however, you won't have to worry about the weather. The PATH is a giant series of tunnels full of shops that connects several malls (e.g. Eaton Centre) to several subway stations.

Many subway stations are directly connected to malls, libraries, civic centres...and some subway stations are so big they contain dry cleaners, eaters, clothing shops, and there used to be a bookstore at Eglinton station!

Finch Station is connected to Finch Centre with shops and eateries that service the attached buildings, right outside is a Korean district with Korean eateries, grocers with prepared meals, and a food cart. There is a karaoke bar too.

North York Station is directly connected to a civic centre, the North York Reference Library which had five floors, Novo Hotel, Empress Walk mall with a cinema at the top and its arcade, Loblaws Supermarket, multiple pharmacies, Dollarama, fastfood, sushi restaurant, Best Buy, and some unique local shops (in the civic centre side). Right outside is te Mel Lastman Square which have an outdoor skating rink.
>>
>>1195085
Eglinton Station is connected to several malls, cinema, and the shops out on the street tends to be small and local and stretches for a few blocks.

Bloor and Yonge station is directly connected to a mall that caters to attached office buildings, and it's linked to another mall all the way up in Cumberland that has some local unique shops, like one that sells Tibethan clothes up around Cumberland, and a shop for board games. Steps from Toronto Reference Library, which runs a lot of cultural events in its salon.

...but eh, ultimately, Toronto is a summer city, most of our interesting stuff are in the summer, in districts blocks from the subway that will be harder to get around in winter because the buses are never on time. You can have a very restful vacation here exploring the libraries and shops and universities (Ryerson is connected to the PATH, U of T is a sprawling series of buildings walking distance from a few subway) - if you manage to find a good place to stay that's near the subway (buses are horrible) and if your week runs Monday to Sunday (how the weekly transit pass runs).

If you want a cultural experience and don't mind the crowd, come back in the summer, or at least wait till May when there is an Asian festival on the waterfront. Or you can go on a field trip to where they collect maple syrup sap from trees.

Montreal is one the best cities in the world if you are into restaurants, bars and clubs.

Quebec city is super pretty but only needs one day, two days at most.

I haven't visited Toronto but have heard mixed things. Its a large, very N American city, like New York in many ways. Some people describe it as very 'corporate' in comparison to Montreal, a city that is less wealthy but more organic in many respects.

Make sure to stay downtown in Montreal. Everything is walkable/easy accessibly by Uber:

Clubs:
Appartment 200 (hip-hop)
Ecole Privee (hip-hop)
Velvet (house)
Stereo (house after club)
Salon Daome (underground house)
La bachanale (rave series, check resident advisor)
Newspeak (experimental)
Fonzie (hipster)

Supper Clubs:
Flyjin (wednesday) house
Joverse
Soubois

Assorted restaurents for different budgets:

Misoya (ramen) - on rue bishop
Mikado (sushi)
Sho dan (sushi) - rue metcalf
Anton and james (deli and pizzeria) rue stanley
Mandys (salad) - rue crescent
La banquise (poutine) -
Anja (persian tea house ) - rue sherbrooke
Soubois (dinner and club) - maisonneuve
Ballpark (rec by Laura)
La majestic (tartare)
Le comptoir (seafood) (meat and cheese plates)
Laloux (cool presentation)
Lola rosa (vegetarian)
Entrecôte
Atma (indian)
Santos (DJ)
Gros Lux
Crazy falafel
Kazu Japanese diner
Toque French cuisine (best in Quebec)
Brasserie t! Diner of Toque
Primo Segundo Italian
Impasto rock and roll Italian
Mythos Greek party
Milos fancy greek
Garde Mange seafood
Joe Beef
Dulcetto mid range Italian
Bevo party Italian
De Emma high end Italian

I'm not the authority on bars but:

Souwu
Maison cloakroom
Big in Japan bar
Le lab
La distillerie
Chez Paree (strip club)

Now if anyone could help me with Rome it would be appreciated:

>le Quebec isn't a North American city maymay
this seriously needs to die. Montreal is a pretty typical (north) American city. It's French-speaking, it has a regional character like many other regions, but that doesn't mean it's radically different from the setting it's in -- North America. I lived there for 6 years, it's a place definitely worth visiting, etc. etc. but I'd swear on my left nut that it's not at all out of place among Canadian and American cities.

Montreal is an excellent place for food and drink, but I think Toronto has far surpassed it, and over a decade ago now... Montreal IS a shrinking and literally crumbling city. Its glory began to fade in the late 70s when Quebec shot itself in both feet and then the nuts by passing Bill 101. It's been on a steady decline ever since, perhaps paradoxically for the Frenchfags who thought it would help them. Anyway, Montreal still does some things very nice

Honestly, I find nightlife better and more varied in Toronto, even though you do have to deal with more douchebags overall (easy to avoid, as 95% of douchebags hang out in one of the same 9 or 10 clubs/bars). In Montreal, it's just more crusty dreadlocked white dudes with yellow teeth who un-ironically wear Marxist-Leninst Party pins and chainsmoke. Montreal girls are a touch sluttier than average, that's one nice thing. Definitely rubber up, though.

Also this, "hurr Toronto is just a corporate drone city" is old, dry and incorrect. Usually repeated by people who've never been to the city, or spent 20 minutes in front of Union Station (smack dab in the financial district) one time 15 year ago when they were a kid.

If you really want partying though, Canada is the wrong country entirely.
>>

>>

Not really. Any immigrants to Quebec basically 'need' to be French-speaking or they'll have it pretty hard. Makes sense in a way, right? Except all it does is ensure Quebec gets all the Francophonie immigrants, from such industrious places as Haiti, Morocco, Chad, Senegal, Cameroon, and Lebanon.

>>1197014
Come at me, frog.

Anyway, to OP reading, Montreal is still a nice enough place. You'll probably have a nice time there. It definitely shows its age, though. To me it feels (visually atmospherically) stuck in the early 90s or something. You know all those Just for Laughs short hidden camera gag clips Comedy Network shows? They're all shot in Montreal, and sometimes it's rather hard to tell if they're filmed last year or 10 or 15 years ago...

As an insider, Ottawa is a good city to live in, but it doesn't seem like an interesting city to visit.

I recommend Quebec City above anything remotely close by.
>>
>>1197197
Not since the beginning, but for the last few years or so it's been "a thing".

>>1197606
Follow the threads closely, and it's literally always the Montrealers (or small town provincial-fags) who start shitposting about Toronto, often before Toronto was even mentioned by anyone else. Just a little insecure, perhaps?

Hating Toronto for no real reason is a Canadian speciality, and you definitely notice it here. Similar to how many countries hate their largest city BECAUSE REASONS. For Australia it's Sydney, for France it's Paris, for UK it's London, for the US it's NYC, for Germany it's Berlin, for Sweden it's Stockholm, etc. etc.

I attribute it to tall poppyism more than anything, I guess.
>>
>>1195728
Except quebec city
>>
>>1197932

People hate Toronto for no real reason? Dude you should start reading comments and get out of your shit hole. Here's a start:

https://www.vice.com/en_ca/article/toronto-is-exactly-the-kind-of-city-canada-deserves-to-bring-us-together-in-mutual-loathing

I've travelled everywhere around the world, visited almost every top-50 cities and can confidently say that Toronto is the worst. Soulless, boring, rigid, expensive for no reason...I could go on and on.

Your city doesn't even deserve a discussion on /trv, but I can't handle letting poor foreigners think it's a place that deserves a visit.

You should start travelling for real. That will give you a badly needed sense of perspective.
>>
>>1198036
This. Toronto is fail and AIDS. I would not spend more than a day or two there, *tops.*

Canada as a whole outside of Vancouver/BC and Quebec is impressively unremarkable, to be honest.

Toronto though, spend a day, check out CN Tower, Ripley's Aquarium, the Hockey Hall of fame, stop by the Brass Pole that night (easily one of the best strip clubs I've ever been to, and the girl aren't hard to bang) maybe take a day tour to Niagara Falls, then do yourself a favor and put that town to your rudder and never look back, because you'll have seen everything that city has to offer.

Oh, and food, Toronto's most redeeming quality is it has some *baller* ethnic food choices, some of the best Japanese, Thai, Vietnamese, and Mexican food I've had outside of said countries or Vancouver.
>>
>>1198036
>Your city
Joke's on you. I'm German. But I've got two sets of cousins in Canada (northern Alberta and a suburb of Toronto), representing the entire living remainder of my dad's family. I've been several times (including a 8-month stay in Toronto) between childhood and as recently as 2015. I'm 33 now. I've been just about everywhere in the country, too.

I've also been to 30+ countries on all unfrozen continents, lived in three countries, and speak three languages. This was also me: >>1196868.

Citing Vice articles by Buzzfeed clickbait 'writers' to make your one point? Srsly? Lame. The article is shit, histrionic (typical Vice), and genuinely factually wrong. Toronto is the media capital because it's the biggest city. Boohoo. Most of what that guy complains about is just media clique circle-jerk moaning. You aren't stupid enough to believe what ivory tower media 'intellectuals' say in a newspaper that no one reads equals what typical 'joe publics' in Toronto also think, do you? You are stupider than I'd given you credit for... The author even explicitly confirms what I said, that hating Toronto for no real reason is a national past-time.

A lot of what Toronto is criticised for seems more to do with a (typical) problem of piss poor Canadian urban and regional planning. Sending 90% of all shitskin immigrants to one city, and refusing to pay for infrastructure, etc sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I find the hate for Toronto seriously misplaced. It's not my favourite place and I won't pretend it is. But I always found people fairly nice, had fun, and found lots to do. If you think it's shit, then it is YOU who needs to travel and get out more. Typical Canadians. This is always something I notice when I visit. No matter how 'friendly' people are, they have no real perspective.

Once again, Canada is really the wrong country to dick-wave about cities, any single one of them.

Brampton brown as fuck. toronto is boring. go to Roncy and queen street and hit China Town dumpling house.. montreal blows. it's awkward there..it feels like there's a class divide..like the French hate the English language. down town blows. old montreal is a tourist trap. habitat 67 is one of the coolest things I've ever seen and that area where the expo took place is dope as fuck really like that. the biodome and old olympic stadium are cool and run down. the sickest thing is the Olympic village apartments. gotta see em up close.. mile end is hipster paradise..limes for all the good restaraunt is annoying..transit system is amazing..I like and hate montreal..toronto.is worse

There's nothing too large in there, mostly small animals. I was last there when I was 12 or so (about 20 years ago) and thought it was neat, although even back then I felt it was showing its age a bit.

As someone who is learning French, is Montreal/Quebec my best alternative to experience a french speaking area aside from France?

How french is it really? Would they just switch to English if they are annoyed at me trying to speak?

> best alternative
Province of Quebec yes, city of Montreal no.

Some will switch, some won't. Generally using French first is preferred and appreciated by francophones, obviously. Some are just so used to switching for anglos, that it will happen. Just keeping speaking French then, no biggie. But that's just in Montreal. If you go to the smaller towns spreading northeast of Montreal, it is more likely they won't switch. It's like the equivalent of rural Missouri or something though, only the people are speaking French.

The part about the city being stuck in the 90s is ridicously accurate, when I visited, I swear almost every store/cafe played 90s soft rock, people unironically wore leather jackets and even the color scheme in the subway was all muted pastel.

Montreal and quebec city. Toronto is kinda boring if you have ever been to a city before. (Aquarium, okay food, museums) ottowa has better museums than quebec city. Quebec city has much cooler spots than ottowa though. You will be suprised with cities in canada. They are not very dense. Only certain parts have alot of traffic. Montreal has good food and skip the galleries. They suck. If you want really good stuff go to dc in america. Clubs and strippers. Other than that montreal is kinda boring tbqhwyfam.... hell ottowa has some stuff going on. Maybe do a day there. Museum of civilisation is great. Casino across the river. Some decent places to eat. Montreal go out to a bar, try some good food, get yelled at in french.
Go to quebec city, see some old buildings, go to your hotel and get drunk and get kicked out of the lobby.

Canada kinda sucks desu. Next time plan your trip around something. Go camping in algonquin park. Get a guide and go on a portage canoeing camping adventure, go hunting with a guide, get a bush plane to secluded indian reservation up north. Kayak out to james bay.

Elk hunting in bc, skiing at mont tremblant. Plan somethig cool next time.

Lol you're going to look back on your life in 40 years, still be a virgin, and reflect upon this autistic list of subway station amenities and book stores you created, and realise you've wasted your life. Should have stayed in your home land, FOB

LOL

Toronto is homestly the most generic shithole on the planet. Its literally that cartoon of the kkk guy traveling the world and every city is the same generic multicultral shithole. Take in an ethnic this, buy an ethnic that, visit a nondescript ((modern art))) museum. Ride to the top of the CN tower and gaze upon the vast shitty concrete landscape and polluted lake.

Ottawa has better museums, Montreal a better vibe, and QC has better history. Skip Toronto.
