I have the unique opportunity to spend 6 months in Sarawak.
I'll be spending most of this time in Kuching.

Anybody been to Kuching before?

What's Malaysia like?

Are they welcoming to western men?

I hear food/general cost of living is cheap there. How much would I spend on an average day for food?

I only speak English. How big of a problem will this be?

I hear the country as a whole is pretty conservative compared to Thailand or Vietnam. Can I browse 4chan while I'm there?

I've spent 4 months in Melaka and am currently in Kuala Lumpur (1 month and counting). It's first world as fuck and probably way cheaper than it should be.

Everyone speaks basic English and are far from poor. I'm East Asian so I blend in here but I doubt anyone gives a shit that you're white. Melaka has large amounts of white tourists.

People generally keep to themselves here and it's not easy to be buddy buddy with the locals. Porn is blocked but that's about it.

Rent can be 400rm+ (sub-$100 USD) for one room. I stayed at pic related for 450rm/mo. Food is between $1-$2/meal. I average about $1.25/meal.

No ramifications for browsing something like 4chan?

Any laws I should know about?

Malaysians don't really give any fucks. Easiest immigration ever. Police are supposedly corrupt and I've heard stories of them stopping Indians to ask for bribes (most of them have the wrong visa and are here to look for work). I've never had that issue and the ones in Melaka was lax as hell even when one of the guys living in my house got stabbed.

Pic related is Chinese economic rice ~$1.50. Free tea + soup.

I hear that without a proper visa you cannot stay in the country for more than 90 days at one time.

I was encouraged to only stay in the country for about 80 days or so, then leave for a day or two and then come back in.

What do you do for visas?

I get a 90 day stamp on entry. Unless you look like you're from a poor country and are here for work, they probably won't bother to really look at your passport. Last time I edged close to the 90 day limit, I just took a $10 bus down to Singapore for day. Not sure what options you have from Sarawak.

Pic of blood splatters from my drug selling housemate getting stabbed.

It sounds like you've gotten your 90 day stamp done several times at this point.

You've had no trouble?

From Sarawak I think I'd just take a flight or boat to Singapore for a day and then re-enter.

Worst comes to worst I could just drive down to Indonesia for a day I guess to get "re-stamped."

I have four 90 day stamps. My total time in Malaysia isn't all the high though. 5 months in the past 1.5 years. Malaysian immigration really is the easiest immigration I've ever been through. Faster than getting a coffee. No questions or words exchanged. They just stamp it.

Singapore will give you more scrutiny. Be sure to have the address you're staying at on hand.

Thank you very much.

You've been a big help.

Very random but 2 more questions.

1) I heard that prostitution is very rampant in Malaysia, is this true? As a tourist if I was to visit such a service should I expect to have to deal with cops or anything?

2) What's it like trying to rent a car? I heard all cars are manual transmission. I highly doubt that ALL cars are, but do you have any experience with renting/driving there in Malaysia?

1. No personal experience but a friend of mine went fucking every two weeks or so. It's not super out in the open because it's a Muslim country. Even then, we saw a Chinese ad looking to hire "male travel companions" at extremely high wages.

2. I've talked to locals a bit about this and it sounds like their license tests require you to drive manual. I've never rented a car, most essential things are clustered close enough for walking distance or public transit.

Rented a car once in Langkawi which was an Auto.

If they had it there I'm sure you'd be all good on the mainland so to speak.
