Hey everyone! My girl and I are starting to plan a trip to New Zealand for early next year, maybe between March and May. Now we live in Australia so we are pretty close but know little about the place. We aren't wanting to be nestled up in the city nor even suburbia, we would like to stay somewhere more natural and mountainous. Somewhere fresh. Does anybody know any nice areas // attractions outside of the typical Auckland etc. Looking for beautiful natural sights to see. Thankyou in advance.

South Island, Fiordland or Mount Cook if its not raining for the next 10 weeks (2 best places in NZ), Nelson area or Kaikoura (not anymore after the earthquake) if weather is shit
North Island, Cape Rainga, Taranaki, obvious Tongariro and maybe the East Coast. My personal favourite is the lake Waikaremoana Walk as its probably the least visited Greatwalk, very remote, but very beatiful. See pic related
Get a backcountry hut pass; it's good for a year of staying in the world's most isolated mountain huts, making beautiful love in front of a coal fire.

Thankyou! I will look into these places and see what's good
If you're in the North Island; tongariro crossing if you like hiking, North of auckland if you like beaches.
South Island; anything on the south west coast if you want mountainous nature. Queenstown if you want to get drunk.
Avoid; Hamilton, Rotorua unless you like maori shit, South auckland, Christchurch, invercargill
blue = scenic belt with southern alps, fiordland, marlborough sounds, and west coast
orange = shitty towns and expanses of nothing but farms
