Just curiosity, but is it possible to backpack in this area or there are only resorts to stay?

Only place I've been in that image is D.R, never stayed anywhere else but Resorts though. The Hard Rock Resort in Punta Cana for example was the best experience I've ever had in travelling, except the price.

Ive always wondered if its possible to isalnd hop via boat or ferry rides through the Caribbean islands.

OP here. While I was researching about it I discovered there is a ferry system who covers French DROMs and some countries, but that's all I've found. http://www.express-des-iles.com/index.cfm?lng=en
Big issue in the lesser antilles with islands is getting admitted. If you fly in for a stay at a resort and have booked a return trip, you're fine. Proof of funds and intent to exit matter. Having a ticket out is big. Capitals have hotel chains, but night life is door to door taxis in these cities.
They're worried about 2 things
>white people that come who wont spend any money
>white people who go into the poorer areas out of necessity and get killed by locals
It's possible to sail them, but having a boat and moorage fees makes them more lenient about island hopping. You can buy a cheap used sailboat there.
DR shouldn't be in this pic, way different from size/economy/culture.

>but it doesnt seem cheap
islands are not cheap.
everything in the basics of life are imported, gasoline and imported goods drive up the cost of living significantly, and not being hugely competitive in airfare like a commercial hub city would be, adds to the costs. If you want "island" experiences without the high prices you visit coasts in normal countries connected by truck deliveries via roads and close to major seaports. Try being 2 hours away from the major city by car and it's incredibly cheap tourism.
