I will be going on exchange soon. How to make friends with the locals (and no, I am not talking about fuckbuddies)? Is it easy to make friends with the locals? I've heard of stories about none of the locals inviting you to their events as they already have their own social circles.

Learn the language, and recognize that you are a foreigner. You will make people feel awkward at typical gatherings outside of being a conversation piece. You are an outsider intruding.

Depends on where you are going to, in particular, how many exchange students are going to that city.
I went to a smaller town in Russia - only 20 or so exchange students and thus the locals were very eager to meet. It was so easy to get to know them, hang out with them and get invited to their places.
Friends of mine went to the typical exchange cities like Barcelona, Paris, Stockholm - very hard to get out of the Erasmus group there.

Just socialize like you do back home

Don't listen to this imbecile.
Yes, you are a foreigner but if you make the effort to try and learn the local language and customs you will make friends. Some people will see you as a sideshow of sorts, others are genuinely interested in making a friend from another culture. 14 years since I went on exchange (11 months), I am still very good friends with a number of people I hung out with when in-country.
Remember to kee an open mind, it might be tough at first but stick to it, going on exchange was the best thing I ever did.
I go on exchange early January and i've learnt from people at the university I'll be attending that most places have a heap of events and what not for internationals.
Don't be worried if you're going to a country with an extreme culture change, there'll be plenty of others in the same boat as you so you won't always be "the foreign guy"

Not OP, but have you seen these guys irl again?

Absolutely. Went back 2 yrs after my exchange program (2002) since then many have come to visit me back home here in Australia, including my host "parents", I've gone travelling in New Zealand with some and most recently I went back to Holland to visit. I'll be there again next year to see them all again!
